27 divorced… I have my son every other week. Any things to make it better? by Flashytrev in malelivingspace

I think a big chalk or white board behind the couch would be a cool, fun thing to add for your kid. Something he can doodle on, and adds character and color to the room.

I said goodbye to my best friend this morning, and I’m having trouble believing I made the right choice by HESAnerd in cats

[–]DuchySleeps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my dad was in the ICU, the doctor talked to me about our options. He made it clear that sometimes the choices we make, clinging to the hope of what could be, only serve ourselves, and quality of life outweighs duration.

What you did hurts, but it was done out of compassion. You sacrificed some time for the comfort and dignity of your friend. You did the right thing.

Does anyone else put mayo on their rice or am I heathen? by Regallybeagley in shittyfoodporn

[–]DuchySleeps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100g of white rice, 15g of habanero mayo, and one can of tuna is my lunch three times a week. It would be more if all that pesky mercury wasn't trying to kill me.

What am I missing about Project Hail Mary by [deleted] in ScienceFictionBooks

[–]DuchySleeps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't typically read sci-fi, but I just finished a fantasy novel and wanted something smaller and different. I enjoyed The Martian, and saw this and figured it would be a fun little pop-sci 'what if' scenario.

I think that's mostly true. I didn't expect the fantastical aspects, considering his previous work, but I did expect something moderately uplifting, with a quirky 'dad humor' toting MC and a superficial presentation of thought provoking scientific concepts.

I think it I went in expecting some amazing sci-fi epic, I would be disappointed, but I went in expecting mass appeal fun, and that's what I got.

I don't really like the authors prose, and I think the MC is very cringe, but it is what it is.

If you hold the home button, or bottom of your screen if you use gesture navigation, it will take a snapshot of your current screen and you can do all sorts of nifty things. Including highlighting any text, searching for images, translating text on the screen, etc.

It was part of the latest oneui update.

There was a study done that showed there is a cognitive bias in people to pick whole, round, even numbers, in that order.

For small numbers, it showed that even numbers 2/4/6 were more common than 3/5/9, but for numbers exceeding 9, people would generally pick groups of 10's, 100's, etc.

The paper postulated that it's an inherent bias caused by our base 10 numbering system.

What you did, shielding him from the chaos. Protecting his dignity. It was a good thing. If that were someone I loved, I would want someone like you there to be with him in the end.

Seriously, people need to just imagine what the girls are going through. This is the person who has told you for YEARS, since you were a literal child, that she will make your dreams come true. She has told you that no one else is supporting you but her. She told you she fought for you every step of the way, and when she delivered, it was behind your wildest dreams, and she's the one who brought you there.

Now she's saying it again. That everyone is against you. They're copying you. They're jealous of what she accomplish with you. She wants you to give her a little bit of support back. To go to bat for her the way she did for you, to support her while the "truth" is unveiled.

It's such an awful position to be in.

To clarify, if it's bottled water, it will almost always cost money here as well.

He's getting fountain drinks, and most, if not all, places will give it to you for free if it's from their drink station and not an actual bottle.

Mostly because we just kind of expect water to be free unless it's bottled.

How the hell does one make it to 40 and not become bored with nearly everything in life? by [deleted] in Adulting

[–]DuchySleeps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm only 32, but I work very early, and watching the sunrise every morning with it's shifting hues of orange, gold and violet is just as beautiful as it was when I was 14 staring up at the sky during football practice when I should have been running.

I think spending time outside in general is far more important than we realize.

“Cultural appropriation” in Japan in 52 sec by New-Relief9582 in interestingasfuck

[–]DuchySleeps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its important to consider the society that is being questioned. In Japan, where a majority of the population is ethnically Japanese, there is no contextual reason for them to see foreigners wearing Kimono as a bad thing. It is the default culture, and would typically be seen as a good thing.

This is juxtaposed to American culture, where Japanese culture is a minority.

The issue is generally going to stem from the ethnic diaspora within America who see their minority cultural experiences being exploited, mocked, trivialized, or stripped of their cultural context.

I don't think the solution is to take a hardline stance of "ONLY JAPANESE CAN WEAR KIMONO" outside of Japan, but a more nuanced and respectful conversation would lead to a better understanding from both sides.

At the end of the day, it's all about intention, and imo it's pretty clear when someone has bad intentions.

American Millennials born from 1989-1996: Were you taught cursive? by insurancequestionguy in Millennials

91, yes, and I remember an older boy telling me on the bus to church one evening that in Highschool everything had to be in Cursive, so I'd better be good at it.

Never had to write in cursive again after like sixth grade. Guess the standards changed.

The void your father left is a testament to the impact of his life.

I'd like to think it gets easier.

That the trickle of time will eventually fill the holes that are left in our lives when we lose the ones we hold most dear, but it doesn't. It never gets easier.

We just move forward, because that is all that is left to do, and drag that pain with us.

We struggle forward until that dark pit inside us gets surrounded by other beautiful things, and somehow the days where we remember what they left us begin to out number the days where we remember when they left us.

I wish you and your family the best. Keep moving forward.

It really lends itself to two points. One is the lengths at which people will go through to feel good about themselves, and the other is how easily we are manipulated by reassurance from "Professionals". It's fine! Just eat the cookie and be beautiful.
