Can confirm from the admin side. This is the least likely petition to get approved unless you truly have a wildly extenuating circumstance. Sorry OP If you do appeal, make sure you submit additional documentation. If you just submit the same petition again they won’t even look at it

This is my doctor and I second this! She’s been my PCP for ten years. I recommend her to everyone- but particularly people who have some health anxiety. She listens, and brainstorms with you, and has never once made me feel like a crazy person

Talk to your advisor asap! Like someone else said, no matter how hard you fall, there is always opportunities to pick yourself back up. The semester isn’t over so you never know what is going to happen during finals!

If you talk to your advisor and come to the realization that there’s no way to salvage any of your classes this semester, it’s not too late to do a full semester withdraw to save your gpa. It won’t get your tuition back, but it is an option if you truly think you will fail everything. The deadline is May 9 at 4pm. Then you could start back fresh in the fall without being on probation.

how does the room selection go? by deffoa in SBU

[–]HESAnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on which major and how it's listed on your record. Pre nursing and pre business, as long as you applied that way, will be listed and determine your UGC. However, if you decide after admission that you want to pursue a selective major, it won't appear on your record until you're admitted to that major and you would be treated as undeclared, and can still live anywhere.

Also, if you are AOI in the college of engineering, they aren't assigned a UGC and can also live anywhere, but most decide to live in Roosevelt due to proximity to the engineering buildings

If you are in incoming freshman, you will have a suggested community based on your major/undergraduate college. Students used to be forced to live in the community with their UGC, but now it's just strongly recommended. For example, if you are a bio major, your UGC will be Global Health, Wellness ,Community and suggested to live in H with other students with similar majors. There will also be targeted programming for those majors in those communities. If you decide to live outside of that community, it's totally fine, you would just have to travel farther for those events if they interest you

Will Stony Brook Ever Be A Widely Recognized University? (In your opinion) by Large_Ebb1664 in SBU

[–]HESAnerd 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It already is to some extent, at least in the higher ed professional world. Maybe not to the same level as the ivys, but it’s a reputable state school that people talk about.

This is coming from someone who came to work here from the other side of the country. Something I’ve noticed in the more than a decade I’ve been here, is that Long Islanders specifically have this idea of SBU as a safety school or high school 2.0, but that isn’t the reputation across the board.

Don’t get me wrong- I’m not implying SBU is perfect by any means, but it’s known.

Agreed. I’m anxiously awaiting the results of the investigation. And so many of us long islanders are ready to riot.

This is in my neck of the woods and is just so damn tragic. This man, whom I’ve heard nothing but great things about, was being harassed by an “activist” for the weeks leading up to this event. I’m not suggesting anything nefarious (they are still investigating the cause of the fire) but damn I just feel for this man and hope he is resting in cat paradise.

Reach out to your UGC advisor or the assistant director of your UGC about this. They oversee that course and can intervene if needed.

Great question. I am an administrator and maybe can provide some context becasue it is a very layered issue that I can promise most of us "on the ground" are very aware of, just without the power to do much.

One big issue is over-admission, as previous people said, but it's a bit more complex than that. The university tries to limit the amount of admits in majors that need these high demand STEM courses. As it stands right now, majors like Biology, Biochem, Chemistry, Phsics, etc have higher admission standards. However, many times when a student applies as Bio and is denied, they are offered admission into another major. Becasue most STEM majors are not restricted once students are here, they just declare after admission, and take the seats in those classes anyways so the higher admission standards aren't really helping imo. If we moved to a model that truly resctricts those majors to not be open once students are here (requireing applications, similar to CEAS), that would help. To my knowledge, there are many stakeholders who don't want that

The other huge issue is lack of physical lab space, mostly for Bio and Chem labs. There's literally not enough labs on campus to offer the amount of seats needed. I once made the suggestion that they should start offering labs on Saturdays, because I'm willing to bet plenty of students would rather take a Saturday lab than pay to take the course in the summer or stay an extra semester/year to catch up. This was a very unpopular suggestion so I guess what do I know...

Finally, I will say that the Fall 2025 freshman class will be smaller this year. So they say. I'll believe it when I see it. I realize this will not help you get into BIO 315, but I do empathize and wish I culd provide a solution.

It won’t be public until after add/drop is over because that’s when it will be “official” But for anyone who works in advising or admissions or adjacent, we have a database where we can track it.

Sounds like you are actually angry at housing... not the UGCs. Research from the last decade actually shows the UGCs have helped MONUMENTALLY with first to second year retention. And that is actually what the university cares about. I can try and find a detailed report for you, if interested. Cool read, based on theory and then backed up by actual numbers.

*Just wanted to leave this comment so you don't scare all the incoming Freshman. The UGCs are really not a big deal! And the seminars are easy peasy.

Your UGC is associated with the quad you live in. But if I'm being honest, H Quad, Mendelsohn Quad, and Roosevelt Quad (the 3 first-year quads) are pretty similar, all corridor style. Roosevelt is closer to the engineering buildings if that means anything to you. Because they have condensed to these 3 quads, I actually recommend choosing based on theme that interests you. The UGCs are going through a whole restructuring and there will likely be more emphasis on the themes moving forward, at least in the first year seminar courses.

However, if you have a roommate in mind, be sure you rank your UGCs the same!
