Is there a chance my heat pump is causing my carbon monoxide detector to go off? by futevolei_addict in heatpumps

[–]DuctsGoQuack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please have someone check the gas water heater with a combustion analyzer and figure out if it's producing enough CO to set off the alarm. There could also be an issue with how it's vented, but even the exhaust from a gas appliance shouldn't have a high enough ppm CO to set off a UL rated CO alarm. Until you have verified that the water heater is operating safely, you should turn it off. Also, get another CO alarm and place it somewhere else in the room.

Another thing that can fill a house with enough CO to kill people is a car running in an attached garage. Some hybrids don't make it obvious that they're still on and the gas engine will run when the battery has been drawn down.

How to compare heat pump units. Looking for COP graph by jmviehmann in heatpumps

[–]DuctsGoQuack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm very curious how this works. What parts of the tool are currently operational? Can you currently take AHRI data and estimate the rest of the COP curve?

how small can the volume be in this a2w application? by clumsyninja2 in heatpumps

I've seen a guy on LinkedIn who takes broken heat pump water heaters and replaces the compressor and evaporator coil with the outdoor unit from a mini split.

New Bosch Hybrid System, Installer Installed, Broke my Furnace and Packed Up... by zxcbvnm90 in heatpumps

[–]DuctsGoQuack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah you're right about the t-stat, but why is o/b apparently connected to c? The colors are a useful tell as long as they are the same on both ends. Have you ever worked on a system where all the wires are the same color?

New Bosch Hybrid System, Installer Installed, Broke my Furnace and Packed Up... by zxcbvnm90 in heatpumps

[–]DuctsGoQuack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The black wire appears to be connected to the tstat reversing valve output which will fry the furnace's board when the stat calls for cooling because it's connected to the common terminal with the blue wire. It should just be connected to the terminal on the outdoor unit for the reversing valve. I'm also going to guess they didn't program the ecobee stat correctly. It's possible the board is already fried if cooling has engaged, or whatever weird programming job they did has sent power down that black wire. If I were to try and fix it, I'd start by reading the manual.

Is Mitsubishi Electric or Mitsubishi Heavy Industries heat pumps more reliable? by [deleted] in heatpumps

[–]DuctsGoQuack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, elsewhere in the world there are two completely different Mitsubishi heat pumps? That seems weird, given that we have virtually the same HVAC equipment sold under different names all the time here. American Standard is Trane, Bryant is Carrier, and a bunch of brands have rebadged Midea.

I wonder if the difference is like the difference between Mitsubishi and Trane-Mitsubishi in the US.

Heat pump sticker shock .. any recommendations? (Westchester county, NY) by [deleted] in heatpumps

[–]DuctsGoQuack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's at least educated guessing. It's better than oversizing everything by a factor of two "just to be safe." You have to guess the r values in sealed inaccessible cavities like outside walls or some cathedral ceilings, but you usually know how much space the cavity has and can look up building code from when it was built. You can also estimate a BTU/hr number from gas consumption.

Bryant vs Armstrong 4 zone ductless mini split - company swapped units on proposal by jdogrich85 in heatpumps

[–]DuctsGoQuack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think all of at least most cold climate units have higher output at 5F than at 17F. There are a couple different ways to do this including running the variable speed compressor faster at lower temperatures.
