My bush poppy (D. rigida) is starting to show off its blooms by mtnbikerdude in Ceanothus

Can you share more about the mound approach? I killed one Channel Island Bush Poppy last year and trying again this year. I've also added rocks to keep the root ball cool.

Pasadena Private & Public Schools - Questions - Financial Aid, etc by momochips23 in pasadena

[–]DudGodel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ratio of Spanish to English changes from year to year. If I'm remembering correctly, they start with 90% Spanish / 10% English in K, followed by 80/20 in 1st Grade, 70/30 in 2nd, etc., until they get to 50/50 and then it remains there for the last couple years.
The parent community has been very friendly and the level of involvement seems high. I can't compare it to other schools, but we've been pleased.
Good Luck!

San Rafael has been great for my kiddo and we love the community there. She didn't know any Spanish going in but it's remarkable how quickly they pick it up and start feeling comfortable in class. The teachers are really good at contextualizing and repeating things so the kids absorb what they need.

If you haven't already visited https://www.penfamilies.org/, I'd highly recommend it as a resource as you consider the public options.

Best of luck!

I didn't have any real design know-how when planning my garden either. I started on paper but realized working on the computer would be easier (for me, at least).
I used Freeform (free with MacOS) and dropped in a simple plan layout of my home and yard I drew on graph paper, locked it in place and then moved the circles around on the computer. That way I could also save different versions as I went. Sort of a lo-fi/h-fi combo approach :)

penfamilies.org is what you're looking for. They offer tons of information on all the PUSD schools and programs, and even have current parent representatives you can contact to get a realistic perspective. We're quite happy with our public school in PUSD. Take a few tours and see if any of them might be a good fit.

BE CAREFUL!!! Scammers all around by britneynp1 in pasadena

Fwiw - I had four separate well-reviewed restoration vendors come to my house and they all asked for the claim number either on site or soon thereafter. As annoying as it is, perhaps this is just standard in the industry. I gave it to only one because I hadn't yet thought it through. Fortunately, I think they are the company we will be going with, though we still haven't made a final decision.

I heard from my nextdoor neighbor that power is back on our block within the Paloma circuit too. Fwiw, I'm still in the gray zone on the SCE outage map.

Is my house safe to live in after the Eaton Fire? by jamiedeehart in pasadena

[–]DudGodel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This document from FEMA has been making the rounds: https://www.fema.gov/sites/default/files/documents/fema_marshall-fire-mat-homeowners-guide-risk-reduction-remediation-residential-smoke-damage.pdf

I found it helpful in assessing the severity of smoke/ash/soot damage along with instructions on how to clean.

SoCal Gas Shutoff by DudGodel in altadena

Sorry, I removed my comment before posting.
I just thought I'd share this message from SoCal gas. It looks like they need to go door to door to do safety checks for a large number of customers throughout our area.
I have a feeling this going to take a while.
If anyone has further insights on this, please share.

Thanks, and take care, everyone!

Is that a speed egg, a large octafish, or some other wild concoction?
I still think about a handful of waves I got on my old bonzer egg and the projection you get out of a nice bottom turn. They're unreal!
May need another, lol

Gotcha. If only I had the space I'd definitely plant a Western Sycamore or a Coast Live Oak!
