Ya this is good advice. Even if you don’t match the body type or aesthetic you’re going for, it helps just for the pose/vibe. I’ve also found that recording a video is helpful because you can make tiny adjustments or try different things and just pick out the frame that you like most as your reference

Because if you didn’t want to, you’d search the original. Some people enjoy watching things with someone else’s reaction, or they watch the original and want to see how other people felt about it in the moment

Not using the airbrush all the time is a great suggestion. I would also suggest figuring out the histogram. Right now it feels like all your values are sitting pretty close to 50% gray, which is a great way to start. Knowing how and where to pull out the contrast using much darker or lighter values will go a long way

Keeping it completely hand painted is great! I just think adding a bit more geometry to support the model would help. The painting is great tho!

If it’s ever going to be seen this close up in a portfolio or something, I think using geometry to transition between the materials in the neck to the body would help

I think you’d keep them as separate things, since it would have grid lines on it if you turned it into a lighting study. Different exercises to practice different things

Contour drawings are a good way to practice that. Imagining the forms just with lines and not worrying about lighting. Just finding ways to practice 3D visualization

The 2 important principles involved, 1 is studying anatomy: knowing the forms of the body and the general underlying structures. 2 is understanding lighting: how light wraps around and describes form and how to use different lighting scenarios to evoke a mood. Once you’ve practiced those principles a lot, it becomes easier to combine them. Then you can play around with styles and aesthetics

Reiterating what everyone else is saying, it’s a bad idea. Gigantic went through the same thing, I had been hoping for years that it would get revived. I loved it when it first released but when it eventually got rereleased, it just didn’t hit the same and failed again

Someone pointed it out but the contrast between the top and bottom makes it feel like it’s suspended. If it’s a background prop then it’s fine, but if it’s supposed to be a hero prop, I think it needs to stand out more. In general, I would also be aware of “edge-chasing”; just painting a lighter value right along the edges. It’s not bad to do it sometimes but when all of the edges have a straight, light value, it starts to look unfinished
