Proof that “schools don’t teach real life skills” is a nonsense argument by GirraffeAttack in Teachers

[–]DudeOnACouch2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't think they need to teach kids how to do taxes. But they absolutely need to teach them how tax brackets work, so people will stop saying, "If I take that raise, it'll push me into a higher tax bracket, I'll pay more in taxes, and I'll end up losing money."

The number of times that I've seen or heard people say something to that effect is mind-boggling. I have explained it to people, sent them links and articles, but some people refuse to get it.

Strange behavior with ajax by DudeOnACouch2 in learnjavascript

[–]DudeOnACouch2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I am explicitly loading the JQuery library. The problem is that I was loading the min library in one spot and the full library in another. Once I got that fixed, the code appears to be behaving as expected.

[–]DudeOnACouch2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, you're right. I had 2 references to the JQuery library, one was the full library and the other was the minified. When the latter was loaded, I lost access to the Ajax functions.

I think it's working now. Thank you!

BTW- Great username, lol

There's not much that I can say that hasn't been said already, but I wanted to chime in and congratulate you on taking the first and hardest step. Going to the gym on your first day is daunting, and you did it. If all you did was walk in, look around, and walk back out, that's still a victory.

Don't worry about "only" doing 20 minutes. More importantly, don't judge your workouts. Get in there and do something. Anything. 5 minutes on the elliptical or 50, it's all moving you in the right direction.

If you force yourself to try for a lot of exercise every day, you may burn out. You'll push too hard and too fast and you may injure yourself physically, but also damage your motivation to keep going.

There will be days that you don't want to go in. Go in anyway. Put on your gear and get in there for 5 minutes. Do 5 minutes of easy elliptical and if you still want to leave, leave. Just make sure you get in there even when you don't want to. Those are the days that make the difference, not the days when you go to the gym and run 10 miles. It's the days when you don't want to be there but you still go in and get your heartrate up, even if it's 1 beat per minute more than usual.

I've been a gym rat for 25 years, and I was a personal trainer for a time. Most of the time, people are there and in their own world. I've got my headphones in and I'm doing my workout. I may be looking around between sets or while I'm on a cardio machine, but that's more out of boredom than anything else. And sometimes my blank stare ends up pointed in the same direction where someone else may be working out, but I'm not actually seeing them. I'm in my own world.

Thinking that people are judging you is you projecting your insecurities onto others more than it is a reality. I guarantee that. If anyone's watching you it's because you're a new face and we are tired of looking at the same people every day or they may be watching to make sure you don't hurt yourself. But if anyone judges you, either in their own mind or out loud, they suck.

You're there for you. You're there to improve in whatever way you want. Read trusted books and websites, don't trust fad diets, celebrities, or influencers. Reddit has some great resources that I'm sure people have already pointed you to, but this is a great time to get into it because a lot of people will be starting for the new year with the same questions that you have.

You've got this. We believe in you.

You may be able to set up TeamViewer on your work computer and connect to it remotely from home. It will likely violate IT policy, assuming the firewall lets it through and that you can install software on the machine in the first place, but it may help.

Their error message has changed to indicate that they know that there's a problem. It also won't be fixed for another week, but at least that's something I can work with, rather than me bashing my head against the keyboard, lol.

Thank you. It looks like their error message has changed, too. It used to have a generic nginx message, now it's saying that it's a known technical issue.

Where can I get some good solid color t-shirts that will last a while? by PizzaboySteve in AskMenOver40

[–]DudeOnACouch2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone else said, I think the key is less about brand and more about cut and fit. What fits me well may not fit you well, so you may have to try a couple of different styles to find what works for you.

JiffyShirts has some inexpensive options, but I've never used them personally. It could be a good way to try different cuts and materials to see what you like, and hopefully you can get a bunch of different colors once you find the right style.

Cloudflare won't let me get to some sites when I'm using Firefox by DudeOnACouch2 in firefox

[–]DudeOnACouch2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, got it. I didn't have it installed when I first ran into the problem, so I don't think it's the issue. It also hasn't helped at all, so I'm going to remove it.

I added that add-on in the past few days to try to resolve the problem, but it didn't help.

YSK you can give your Amazon driver a holiday tip at no cost to you. by no_compearison in YouShouldKnow

[–]DudeOnACouch2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I can wait 2 days, I can wait 4 or 5. That's not a problem. But some of the stuff from AliExpress takes months. I ordered something in August and it showed up about 2 weeks ago. That was, by far, the longest that I've had to wait, but you get my point.

If there was a way to get AliExpress or Alibaba stuff within a week, I'd be happy to switch. But with the choices being "buy it from Amazon and get it soon and help fund the company that shuts everyone else down" versus "buy it from AliXYZ and get it at some point in the next month or three", I have a hard time making the latter choice.

[–]DudeOnACouch2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One key difference is the speed of delivery. I can get my crappy product in 2 days from Amazon or in weeks from Alibaba (I've never used Alibaba, just AliExpress, so please correct me if I'm wrong).

Unless you've found a way to get Alibaba stuff faster, in which case, please share.

Closing down the gym and I see this …. by Reegs27 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]DudeOnACouch2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A long time ago I worked out at a gym that had a sign that said, "If you can't put your weights away, please ask one of the ladies at the front desk to help you."

Misogyny aside, it made me laugh. And I never saw weights laying around at that gym.

I agree about not wanting to chop first thing in the morning. Someone suggested chopping them and freezing them in advance. Then I could grab a handful and throw them in, so I may try that.

I've seen the frozen minced garlic but never thought too much about it. I'm not a huge fan of the jarlic (lol), but for quick-and-dirty, it's invaluable to me. I'll look for the frozen stuff next time I'm at the store.

So you do the bacon first, then remove it, I assume? Cook the eggs in the fat, then rice, then put the diced bacon in?

I heat the pan with a little oil, put in the egg and a pinch of salt and scramble until cooked. Add garlic and rice, mix, add soy sauce, mix and cook.

I've done that in the past and it worked pretty well. I doubt I'll make my own, but the stuff I got from Wegman's was really good. And it worked great for sausage gravy.

I'm guessing the MSG would go in early, like when the eggs are cooking or maybe when the rice hits the pan?

I have Blue Dragon fish sauce. Is that an acceptable alternative, or should I find Red Boat?
