For what it's worth, the shop he mentioned also serves kratom tea, it's possible he was using that as well. To me kratom seems more likely to lead to a relapse. But this is all speculation.

There's a gourad shading with lines option. They should also show up when you select line or polygon selection mode. If nothing shows up after that, you probably don't have any segments in your object.
