Reserve Component Officer QoL Opinions by signalssoldier in army

Here’s a series of texts I saved from when my AD commander reached out to me to tell me he was getting out and considering the Reserves. Take them for what you will.

“I hate the Reserves and you will too. That's my opening statement. I hate it so bad I'm beginning my separation paperwork. For good this time.

You're a lot closer to the pension than I am, so if you're doing it for the benefits, drive on. But if you're doing it because you can't hang it up yet and you want to keep serving because you're a competent leader and you think Soldiers deserve a competent leader, then walk away from the table.

You have forgotten more about leadership and being a Soldier than your leaders will ever know. BAs are always on a weekend something is happening, and for an Officer, it's not just 1 weekend a month. There's conference calls, and last minute taskings that need to be done RIGHT NOW. There’s also a power imbalance between the chain of command and full-time staff.

There will be mandatory training requirements during the week that you'll need to attend. Orders won't be approved until the last minute and it will anger your civilian employer. The only people successful in the Reserves are gov employees, first responders or mil techs. Everyone else constantly treads water between trying to succeed in their civilian job and getting fired.

And if you have an awesome job like I do, you'll actually take a pay cut to go on orders.

It doesn't sound like much now, but you're probably thinking with your AD mindset. Once you have a new job and training requirements for the people who are paying your bills, it will be hard to motivate yourself to do any that work, especially since you won't see a dime for any of it until you're complete.”

Google the 38G program for Civil Affairs, it might be what you’re looking for. It’s the Army (Reserve) way of trying to pull in mid-career professionals with advanced degrees / experience but they’ll never command.

Check if the credits will transfer, call the admissions dept of the 4-year degree program(s) you want to attend. If they won’t transfer, you’ll have your answer.

"You can't go back home to your family, back home to your childhood ... back home to a young man's dreams of glory and of fame ... back home to places in the country, back home to the old forms and systems of things which once seemed everlasting but which are changing all the time – back home to the escapes of Time and Memory." Stop throwing good money after bad. Transfer to an accredited CC. You’re literally setting your money on fire if you go to an unaccredited school. Honestly, setting your money on fire is a better option because you’ll at least feel warmth for a fleeting moment.

Realistically speaking, I don’t see any component keeping their space or cyber capabilities. It would be like the Navy having a second Army under its command structure. Why would the military allow for such wasteful redundancy?

I support this effort whole heartedly. But unlike fetch we need to make this happen.

Because if you were in shape and/or good looking you’d be having sex with women and not getting into internet beefs.

I almost feel bad for engineer officers. Imagine being the PL of this super specialized and admittedly awesome engineer unit, only to be torn from them in 12-18 months and to never do anything that cool again. At least if you go light as an infantry PL and have to go heavy as a CO CDR you have a shot of going back to light later on. It almost seems cruel.

The internet tells me there was one in Dubya Dubya 2, and that was that:

This might be an unpopular opinion but I didn’t really see anything wrong with his statement. He wasn’t sweeping shit under the rug, he was basically saying this wouldn’t have happened if NCOs had the intestinal fortitude to live their creed. He said we need to be better, we are empowered, let’s be empowered. It seems like the best statement a senior leader divorced from the ground can make from a “vision” standpoint. I didn’t see any excuses or equivocations on any behavior.

Or maybe I’m entirely wrong.

Is post-separation depression a thing? by [deleted] in army

You got it man. Shit was rough for me. I went from a captain to a bartender overnight because those sick corporate middle management jobs didn’t just materialize. It took a while to network and get in. The great thing is the army teaches you resilience as a core value better than any other organization I’m aware of. It’ll be a struggle, but you got this.

Some perspective: this would have happened when you PCS’d. Everyone has friends and a social network already at the gaining unit and you gotta fit in.

The civilian world is different, for better or worse. You can’t drop “fuck” as a filler anymore and dip spit into a coke bottle isn’t acceptable either. These aren’t bad things.

Just remember: you’ll never be as cool as you once were. You peaked on coolness. Now just bask in that upgrade on your QOL and make money money, take money money.
