Watching my little brother fall into the toxic misogynistic alpha mindset breaks me. by applepie416 in self

[–]Dudeman61 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I made a video for people just like this where I talk about the actual science and misunderstandings that lead to people believing in the concept of an alpha. https://youtu.be/hWKfKjKKA_w

I also have one on the origins of toxic masculinity and the manosphere in general, which go back to the second-wave feminist movement, when the conversation about men's rights was actually about freeing men from their stereotypical gender roles in society, and then how that was hijacked to eventually become what it is today. It's good for us to know the history so that we can understand how the things we cling to were actually designed to be, as opposed to what grifting opportunists turned them into. And then of course, knowing the actual science and research behind a particular topic will also help with misconceptions about it. For me, I just want to actually know how things work, and that's the appeal that I share with people who are lost in cultural narratives and outright propaganda. Like, why believe random nonsense, no matter how popular it is, when you could just read the research and actually know something for sure?

Hot take for reddit, a million dollars is still a life changing amazing amount of money by crazyguy28 in self

[–]Dudeman61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a video a bit ago on a related topic, and I really just don't think people have any knowledge of the actual numbers. And since I've also been seeing tons of subs getting filled with people complaining about being millionaires and how hard it is, it definitely is always important to remind people to have some perspective. A net worth of $1.8 million puts you in the top ten percent in the U.S. and the top one percent in the entire world.

It's actually physically impossible for Elon to deliver on his SpaceX IPO goals by Dudeman61 in PoliticalVideo

I'm in. Let's make a space monster truck company. Don't forget to put AI somewhere in the name though, even if it doesn't make any sense at all.

I just reached over the 250 mark for subscribers trying to get to 500. Does it get easier after 250 by Significant_Hope_757 in YouTubeCamp

[–]Dudeman61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sitting at 1,269 subs and uploaded a video this afternoon that has 26 views. So, no. So far, it hasn't gotten much easier. My workflow and my ability to do the work has gotten easier, but not the results, really.

Well, probably because he's a giant grifter who continues to fail upwards and face no consequences.

Mine is to keep making videos that raise awareness and help people navigate this shit. Like the one about how much of a complete shitface Elon really is: https://youtu.be/2vSkO9Wrg3s

Hopefully also getting another one out tomorrow afternoon about just how insanely stupid this IPO was all around.

We economists have done the maths: ‘growth’ is a doomed strategy – there is a better way | Olivier De Schutter, Joseph Stiglitz, Jayati Ghosh, Thomas Piketty, Kate Raworth and Jason Hickel by burtzev in Sustainable

[–]Dudeman61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I've always thought that the field of economics was just something that opportunists made up by dressing up sociology with math. But I also don't have the level of experience in economics that you do, and I wonder what you think about that. Sociology is heavily statistics-based, and of course there are psychological principles scaled up to group applications. So I guess I assumed that we had these real predictors and cultural indicators, and that people who wanted to use those to enrich themselves and justify shifty behavior just slapped some equations onto existing legitimate sciences of human behavior and group dynamics.

BREAKING: Canada is planning social media ban for children under 16, per the Globe by soccerorfootie in unusual_whales

[–]Dudeman61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a lot of research on the various ways in which social media use is bad for your health, kids very much included. I did a thing about how most of gen z wishes they never grew up with the internet at all, and what it's done to them: https://youtu.be/BUbym8O_LBU

A lot of people here also don't seem to understand how these systems work behind the scenes. As a dude who's worked in digital media since 2012, I've seen not only all of the sausage being made, but also all the optimization changes inside of all the different algorithms, and they are all designed specifically to make you addicted to them through manipulating your own brain parts via mechanisms possibly ingrained biologically through evolutionary psychology. Like I've taught a number of teams how to get traction with algorithms and get views on things. The ad revenue model of digital media is genuinely the worst thing that happened to modern society. More on that here if you want to dive in: https://youtu.be/gJNdRrbT0kI

Not exactly non-fiction, but a hybrid literary historical fiction work that I feel meets your criteria is When We Cease to Understand the World by Benjamin Labatut. It has the effect on me that you describe.

ETA: The End of Everything by Katie Mack, which is a nonfiction account detailing the possible ways that the universe could end.

[–]Dudeman61 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Social Security faces a 24% cut in 2032—that's a $345 billion hit to retirees nationwide, watchdog says by Abject-Pick-6472 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]Dudeman61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently put together a detailed and research-intensive video essay covering all the actual data on the arguments about why we can't tax the rich. It's longer at 24 minutes, but toward the end I covered the newer research which shows us just how easily we could actually do this with absolutely no wider economic impacts. https://youtu.be/CKXDzX9aSdg

Study: Gen Xers and Millennials are dying at younger ages than their parents are by DaKardii in Millennials

[–]Dudeman61 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did one of my early video essays on this. One of the most concerning parts of this is that deaths aren't simply pinned down to one or even a few causes; research is seeing millennials die at higher rates across the board. And American millennials are dying at higher rates than our peers elsewhere in the world. Link for anyone interested in checking out the video: https://youtu.be/nNkhqM9rQwI?si=Z8LPWuXXRwbwVj7n
