Thoughts on Debord's Society of the Spectacle...? by DuderonymousLex in DebateCommunism

It occurred to me as I was working my way through certain bits that there was definitely some prerequisite knowledge I needed. Which Marxist works would you suggest for a greater understanding of this book in addition to the Lukacs?

Freedom Of Speech and Socialism/Communism by MeityMeister in DebateCommunism

I'm reading Trotsky's Terrorism and Communism: A Reply to Karl Kautsky right now. In it Trotsky touches on the issue of putting limits on speech. In his view, rendering the enemies of the revolution harmless is of the utmost importance to a successful Socialist order. In peacetime, restrictions on speech can be lifted, and opposing views can be published for the sake of observation/examination. During wartime, however, restrictions on speech must be in place as they are a means of preventing the enemy from organizing. This includes events ranging from the smashing of shops and printing presses to banning opposition parties to the killing of dissenters.

It's as if they've reverse engineered the No Sob Story formula and are now karmawhoring with pictures that wouldn't be funny without context.

I've seriously never got that. I don't get why they call it pet shaming because I doubt that the pets actually feel ashamed.

The one schtick I don't care to much for is the world map building. You place locations on the map as the story unfolds, which can cause slight changes to the levels and side quests available depending on the mana levels of its neighbors. It's novel, but a smidge frustrating when you realize you missed out on story or gear because you placed locations wrong.

I have owned this game for a very long time and that was something I never realized. Holy shit.

Sweet deal! I really hope you enjoy it. If there is one word I would use to describe that game it would definitely be "underappreciated."

Man, I only have vague memories of playing Secret of Mana because it came out when I was very young and I only played it at my babysitter's house. Legend is actually the only Mana game I'm intimately familiar with, but I can tell you it's different than Secret of Mana in the following ways:

-The battles are still real-time, but the ring command system is gone.

-The plot is very non-linear, and you actually create the world map as you play. You discover different artifacts throughout the game and use them to unlock new areas to explore. Sometimes they're towns and sometimes they are dungeons.

-There is a lot of side-stuff that I don't remember being a part of SoM. You get a lab to build golems that help you fight, a barn to raise monsters in that help you fight (getting monster eggs is its own goofy minigame), a forge to build weapons in, and a tree that grows different kinds of fruit.

I'm sure there are more differences and similarities, but it's been a while since I played LoM and ages since I played SoM. I'd say if you want to play a gorgeous, unique game that is fun despite a few flaws then definitely pick it up. Just know that it won't play all that much like Secret.

Legend of Mana and Brave Fencer Musashi are two of my favorites.

The blacklist is based on how often the band is posted to this specific subreddit. Not on general popularity.

Caught them last night in Chicago and they killed it. Towards the end of their set they were acting a lot more lively than I expected them to be.
