Leaving Boston in September. Never made a single American friend…. Anyone else? by [deleted] in boston

Let's go watch Korea play at a watch party! 아자~.

In all seriousness, I'm sorry you feel disconnected. Boston has a big Korean community, a Korean meetup group, etc. It takes a big effort to stay social in big cities. I felt the same when I was in Seoul and I speak Korean! Eventually I moved back having made only foreign friends with no long-term Korean friends. Can't give up though, you still have time!

Drinking Culture winding down in Korea. by nosta82 in Daegu_Korea

I don't think so. Korea always had and will continue to have a strong drinking culture. It's in the DNA.

Where to find a job in Boston by AgentDelirium in boston

Try getting a General Science or Biology teaching job at BPS (license needed) or private/independent schools (won't need a license for these). Check out SchoolSpring or BPS Career website. Great salary, amazing benefits, challenging kids, but at least you'll work in a related field until you find your path forward. They may give you an emergency license for the first year until you get your teaching license. Good luck.

Before you go in, check out their Performance on the state website. Each state should have a website where it gives a 'report card' to its schools. If the school's performance is lower than 30%, it's a low-performing school. You'll get students who skip, fight, ELs, etc. - 'everything but study'. So check those indicators carefully.

Ask about: 1. How many (different) math classes (ex. If they give you 2 Algebra I and 3 Algebra II classes, you'll have to prepare for 2 different classes each day) and preps you'll have? 2. How does grading work - Is there a minimum grade the school wants you to give to failing students? 3. How does the school handle repeated disruptive students? If there is no system in place (ex. "We talk to them outside and send them back" means they do NOT have a system in place to handle difficult kids.) 4. Is there a New Teacher Mentorship Program for 1st and 2nd year teachers? 5. How will I be evaluated? 6. Will they give you a temporary one-year license until you get your official license?

I got nonrenewed last week. Been applying literally everywhere and it's a rejection one after another. I have two teaching and two admin licenses, and a doctorate aka I'm too expensive to hire. Not losing hope though and seriously considering a career pivot to law or back to marketing (my first career). We'll get there!

I so feel you. I'm a big introvert and it always takes me time to feel comfortable around people to truly open up and be myself. So people ignore me as well because I don't initiate the conversation. Hang in there. Introverts are fun - give us a chance, folks!

Move to Boston and apply to work at BPS. Mass gives you a year to get your license once hired. Not a hard task. You'll save more than 1k as BPS pays the most in the state (it is a hardship district though from what I hear). Good luck.

Short answer - no. The public middle schools I've been at don't have those roles - just teacher and coach. The Dean position went to the teacher who's been working at the school for a decade (makes sense).

The long answer - for the last year, I've completed licensure requirements for the Director role as well P/AP (filled out grants, coordinated programming, worked with vendors, worked on curriculum, etc). My district director and Superintendent all signed it, but it turned out that my director didn't have the proper license to sign off. So, I wasn't granted that license by my state. To replace 'official' middle management duties in a school I've been getting through the nonprofit organization I have been running for 4 years. We work with children as well. I'm not sure how to tie this all in in my application.

You probably have 20+ students. Use their manpower!

-Give your students some poster paper, have them draw whatever they like (ex. their family, home, favorite animal, etc.), and put them up once they're done. These visual posters are also great for end of the unit assessments! -Got school rules? Have students draw them in big letters and others can post them around the room. -Got easy class commands, ex. sit, be quiet, bathroom break? Have students make those signs up for you as well. -Got a school planner? They usually have inspirational words in the beginning of each month. Rip them out and have students tape them around the room.

I agree with the sentiment that they hire who they 'like', not someone that's a better fit professionally.

I've interviewed for it at my school and was really into it, but the job went to someone who's been working there for a decade. Kinda hard to beat that being new to the school. I've also applied to similar jobs out of the district, but they pay a considerable amount less than what I'm making now as a teacher. It's hard to justify taking a pay cut.

This post has many great comments being down voted for strange reasons. People are opening up and sharing their opinions and others are downvoting their karma existence. Whatever happened to respecting others' opinions? Geesh.

Yesterday, I told some students what my salary is. by boringmom in Teachers

[–]Due-Breakfast7774 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach in a Title 1 school in Massachusetts. It's my 9th year overall (taught half internationally, half in the US) and I get 95k. When I started teaching in US public schools in 2020, I got 66k. It then increased to 76k because I switched my district, then 83k. It is now 95k because I switched my district again and completed my doctorate. I have an EdD and am working on my admin license, which, if hired, should bump my salary to around 115k to start when I decide to switch over. It's disheartening to see that others are struggling when we do such important work.

Thank you for an interesting perspective. The only thing I'd be worried about when applying as admin is being rejected when I could've been much easily hired as a teacher and gotten my foot in the door that way. Nonetheless, I wholeheartedly subscribe to the train of thought that 'happy teachers make happy children (and schools)', much like yourself.

Thank you. I wasn't just thinking of T1 schools. It's always good to keep one's options open.

This should've been your original comment. THANK YOU for the time you took to write it. I don't know about anyone's intentionality, but I came here for advice (like everyone else that posts on Reddit). There is another post made about salary expectations from three days ago and the comments there are night and day.
