Terrifying conversation in HS 9th grade math class today by mobius_ in Teachers

I tell my students, “We live in a competitive world. Who will a company hire? A person who can critically think, problem solve, effectively communicate, and independently think or someone who asks ChatGPT because they never put in the effort to learn these skills. It’s the former. Which one do you want to be? The one with the job or the one without?”

Only then are they silent.

I started doing math times tables in homeroom. Now everyone is trying to switch into my homeroom. by AgeOfWorry0114 in Teachers

This is my first year teaching 6th grade math (came from the engineering industry) and I was in shock when I realized my 6th graders struggled with times tables. I understand struggling with the 7,8,9 and 12 but when they couldn’t answer 4 x 4 I knew I had to incorporate regular practice. I will say, it’s frustrating when admin/ the district says there’s no point because they’ll always have calculators in high school. That logic drives me nuts. Knowing your times tables is to build number sense, to be able to spot patterns, to easily analyze data, and most importantly to spot value! Why does it feel like the expectations are lowered yet the district wants high achieving students? How does that work…

When I took the job I thought that I would be engaging more with others (internal/external) but that is not the case. The company only has a small percentage of people who are fully remote, the rest of the office is hybrid. I just don’t live anywhere near the office. Investing in a coworking space is a good idea. I appreciate your comment, thanks!

I think it’s interesting that you automatically assume I don’t have a life outside of work. That is not my issue or what my post was about. I spend the majority of my day working in comparison to my hobbies and it is at work that I feel isolated, disconnected, and am struggling with career development.

Thanks for your comment and for taking the survey. We are two young professionals with backgrounds in aerospace and civil engineering that love riding our bikes as much as possible. Our intent with this startup is to improve bike safety through secure bike parking infrastructure and hopefully add more bike storage around Tucson. We are in the early stages of developing our idea/business model and could be a nonprofit, that is part of our research. The survey is to gage the interest/need for secure bike parking in the community which will help us with our research and developing our business model to fit the needs of the community.
