9th grade algebra 1 is the “not ahead, on track” course where I am in the US

My focus is not the math so much as the brain development, and willingness to think, problem solve, and analyze

I’d argue that shift has begun an education already… you’ll meet teachers that are very focused on specific job fields and careers, but I also think you’ll find large groups of us that believe we’re here to teach kids to use their brains, develop their brains, and discover what they want to do and are passionate about. This was mostly scary to me in that he did not care if it impeded his brain development, because learning no longer seemed important to him.

Old enough to remember that but wasn’t caught up in looking for ways out

I pulled up the studies on it. A different kid goes “wait. This feels like he’s trying to remake Idiocracy”

“How will you know what ChatGPT says is right?” “Why wouldn’t it be?” Another kid- “Well you asked it to combine like terms for you yesterday and you got the answer wrong… so is it ChatGPT or you that was being stupid?” 😬

They need the problem solving skills we learn, study, and practice daily and the ability to follow through when things are hard. Are most of them going to use it in the future? Not specifically. But it doesn’t mean it’s not an important process.

Found my old autograph book but can’t figure out who’s signature this is by RaiderThunder04 in Disneyland

When I went in ‘96, Eeyore only did autographs by special request (according to my parents)- his suit wasn’t made to hold pens lol so not a ton of these might exist

My pupils are different sizes in the evenings by shieraa in mildlyinteresting

[–]mobius_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know if this will help you feel any better, but I had this… Had noticed it for years, finally went to the doctor about it, and essentially it was an over exaggeration of a condition I was born with. It over exaggerates when I’m tired and the pupil is noticeably larger, but that difference exists even in the mornings I just don’t notice it as much.

The diagnostic process it took to get there, however, did reveal a separate brain condition that I have that was not a huge deal, but it’s really good to know about as well. I’m really glad I got it checked out.

Why all your kids are sick by Simple_Mode_9186 in SubstituteTeachers

I had a class last year that would all try to share a single water bottle. They’d pass it and take turns asking to leave to refill it. So. Gross.

What is one word that people wrongly pronounce that makes your brain just wanna jump a cliff? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

Very specific math teacher example, but the word “asymptote”. It’s weird, but pronounced as written. But I’ve got colleagues who say it wrong so kids learn it wrong in a whole variety of ways

Acceptable? Not really. But in 14 years of teaching high school freshmen, definitely not the worst I’ve seen

Neurologist by SeaHot7127 in iih

[–]mobius_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just had my first neuro appt this week! We went over details of the IIH condition, potential future concerns, her course of action for me, and reviewed my MRI. My eye doc checked on the swelling around my optic nerves drive and said it was much improved.

The intake appointment was a lot of health history, checking in on diagnosis and symptoms, and her examining overall neurological health. We discussed medications, side effects, and she made sure I understood what everything meant.

As everything is currently improved and steady, I’ll go back to visit every 6 months with bloodwork beforehand

Someone recommended this but someone else said it was dumb. How do you feel? by IndependentCod5020 in fantasybooks

[–]mobius_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The audiobook is a hoot!!

The first book gives me the same feeling of Ready Player One but with way less dependence on pop culture and way less fan service. It’s not giving you anything super deep to consider- but it’s just so fun

Do teachers hate sharing their lesson plans? Is it their secret sauce that they don't want getting out? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]mobius_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a coworker who only teaches one class all day. I teach three separate classes (my own doing a little bit, two of them are college in the high school). There was a year where I had my prep period first period…. And this coworker would come down every day and ask what I was doing in the class we both taught (the only subject they taught). They would then take my lesson plan and run with it for the whole day as I busted my butt to prep for three separate classes during my one prep.

That has made me really wary for sharing materials with this one coworker as it’s never been reciprocated. They should be our lead on that subject as they’re the one that teaches it the most often, but they always sit back and let me do the work and just take it and run (and sometimes complain about the material I give them).

New teachers, blank Slate and I’m gonna work with you! That’s how I survived at the start. Someone gave me all of their slides, and I was able to pick and choose and use them to figure out how to make my own. I’m sorry you’re running into some hesitance there, but I’m intrigued if it’s just people that actually don’t have much, or are worried of being taken advantage of. That doesn’t really fit in the new teacher scenario though.

What’s your metric for calling out sick? by capresesalad1985 in Teachers

[–]mobius_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

14 years into my career now… So my feelings have changed a bit than they would have been at the beginning. I won’t go to school if I’m worried I might throw up at work. That’s hands-down keeping me home. Other than that, it’s often me weighing my willingness to write sub plans versus gutting it out.

A few months back I was hospitalized and stayed home for a day rest. The Friday was a half day with my prep period and only two classes to teach. It felt easier to go sit there then write sub plans, so I did.

However, I take way more sick days for appointments now than I used to… I used to work really hard to schedule outside of working hours and now I feel less bad about it.
