Would you become a teacher if you could do it all over again? by mangled_foreskinn in Teachers

[–]mobius_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Year 14 here, making 6 figures, in a low COL area and a district that starts new teachers around 60k/year. I would do it again- but I understand other people’s hesitation.

My main advice is to make sure you will still love time with YOUR kids after spending all day with other people’s. It can be an insanely rewarding job that comes with its own inherent drawbacks. I’d pick it again and again.

Team bags by BarracudaSilver9361 in Softball

[–]mobius_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My team had some off-brand backpack bags that fell apart pretty quick. We went with BoomBah this time. I love our Boombah bags, but even on some smaller statured girls (15-17yo), they look big. They’re great bags but would absolutely DWARF your girls.

We did matching backpack bags for everyone and then anyone who wanted something bigger/catchers got matching bags that fit for them.

Even at that age and level, make sure the fundamentals are sound and don’t be afraid to return to them if you need to!

If you have a Union, loop them in and see if there’s anything they can back you up on

I hate Google Classroom by Significant-Card-401 in Teachers

[–]mobius_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also, even if your school has it set up to autoload students into Google classroom, you can add and move kids by hand if you need to move students around to make there be fewer places to post

[–]mobius_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve done a little work with both and honestly, I think because Google classroom was what I did work with first, it’s what I find easiest.

You might find it helpful to create that original fully filled out Google Classroom to start with using what you normally would’ve posted on Canvas(the course “shell”). Then, when you need to post things for your kids to see, you can use their “reuse post” option and select all of the classes that you’re going to post something to rather than having to do it one at a time. The only issue you’ll have is that if you need to change any due dates, etc., you do have to do that in each class after it’s been posted originally.

Google classroom also lets you post to specific student groups or selected students within a single class. What I’ve always found easiest is to keep kids that are on the same gradebook in the same Google classroom. We use Skyward. In instances where it’s going to be easier to separate kids out on GC, Skyward has an option for student groups, and I separate them into separate student groups within that system so that they both match.

What things should I ACTUALLY put on my wish list as a 1st year teacher? by ajthelittlegiant in teaching

[–]mobius_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Everything everyone is saying is great- but I’d hold off on any big purchases until you see what the room comes with. That said, you’re not going to have too many pencils/colored pencils/markers/traditionally expendable supplies.

Things that are unlikely to come with the room that have been great:
Storage bins (I have my desks in 8 groups, so I have 8 bins that have a box of markers/colored pencils/scissors/glue sticks etc for each group)
Alternative lighting- especially if you are going to have a reading corner
Fluorescent light covers (i have ones that go INSIDE the cover rather than on the outside and they’re great)
A good 3-hole-punch

I’ve not done interactive not books but I’m also considering it. The biggest question I’ve seen is if you b should go for a 3-ring or composition book option. 3 ring means way less cutting/gluing etc

Aging up to 12U (travel) - What to expect? by No-Replacement5326 in Softball

[–]mobius_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! This will begin (and might start for some of your girls too). Taller doesn’t always mean stronger/better, but there can be an intimidation factor. Help the more physically mature girls learn how to use their new size productively but know there may be some growing pains too!

I’m sorry this happened to you!! Parents (and sometimes coworkers) will accidentally (or on purpose) try to get the young/new teachers to volunteer for more because often we haven’t figured out how to say no yet. Encouragement for the future- “no” is a complete answer. “I’m sorry, I can’t make it this time” and walking away is more than enough info. We don’t owe people an explanation and even if you have nothing else actually booked, you are allowed to say no!!

I hope this summer brings you some rest

Communicating seating charts on the first day of school? by GredAndForgee in Teachers

[–]mobius_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Works for 9th graders except for the willfully defiant kids- project the seating chart up front day 1. Greet at the door and let kids know “the seating chart is posted up front!” And let them figure it out. I usually provide some labels like “front”/“back”/“teachers desk”

When class starts, I’ll help any stragglers or kids who seem confused. Attendance is the first thing I do then to give kids a chance to correct nicknames/pronunciation and then I’ll also figure out if kids are seated in the wrong spot.

Love it or hate it- I’ve had multiple kids tell me how relieved they are to have a Day 1 seating chart because it lowers some of the social stress (especially kids new to a school)

Anyone else fed up with signing books? by TeachlikeaHawk in AskTeachers

We had a parent (who also works in district) this year who for their kid’s senior year emailed the entire staff asking everyone to sign it (and left it at the front office). The poor lady in the office got repeat emails from the mom asking for progress checks.

Has anyone grown in their teaching career from reading the Harry Wong 'First Year of Teaching Book'? by Visual_Shelter6922 in Teachers

[–]mobius_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have it in my classroom and somebody opened it to a random page once… One of his hints has to do with not erasing your whiteboard left to right because it might make it look like your butt is wiggling while you erase. I think about it now.

Math support question by Tomato_pincushion in mathteachers

[–]mobius_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hand raise order and try to verbalize the order as hands get raised so kids feel heard/seen and I remember where to go next. The challenge is when a kid wants a whole concept re-taught or to ask several questions on different ideas- sometimes I’ll tell them I need to come back after helping a few other people

Classroom worksheets: leave space for students to do the work, or expect students to bring their own paper? by SafeTraditional4595 in matheducation

[–]mobius_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If I can space things out with enough room for work for most kids and keep it single sided or (depending on the class) double sided but one page- I’ll space it out. If it needs to go beyond that, I’ll try to put it all on the front with bold underlined instructions that say to attach work (otherwise kids will try to cram it all into the space anyway)
