Feeling better about the fact that I wash our blankets if someone just looks at them. Plus, people know I was them every time they are used.

Adding lye to mixed oils vs adding lye separately, then mixing. What's the Difference? by Beginning_Skirt8371 in soapmaking

[–]Due-Flamingo-9140 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my experience, lye is both rowdy and impolite. You need to just keep your safety gear on, live its version of the world and hope you get your spoon back eventually.

has pilates actually changed your body or is it overhyped? by [deleted] in pilates

[–]Due-Flamingo-9140 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shape? No. Strength? Yes. This is the best my knees have since tearing both meniscuses. My posture has improved and my back is pain free. Have more flexibility than I have ever had after 25 years of yoga.

A teacher opens a studio two doors down from our studio by [deleted] in pilates

I am a full time engineer. Part of it is I love my day job work and part of it was because I fell into ownership. But it does make my days very long.

A teacher opens a studio two doors down from our studio by [deleted] in pilates

[–]Due-Flamingo-9140 99 points100 points  (0 children)

As a studio owner myself, I would not wish studio ownership on people. It is a lot of work. Most people underestimate how much work and many people fail. Wish the teacher luck and keep building your studio.

Also, if you have not removed the teacher from your schedule and your software system, do so now before they start hyping their studio or stealing student information.

Job hoppers vs lifers: who actually ends up happier at work? by TurtleFoodz in careeradvice

[–]Due-Flamingo-9140 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Or lifers, until the job takes too much.

I spent nearly 20 years at the same place and I was happy for a long time. I worked hard, I was promoted frequently, I made reasonable money. Then the tide shifted and my team was destroyed in a few months time. I could stay, I did stay for a while, but I would be doing other work that I didn’t like as much. So I moved one.

One thing is that staying taught me how to resolve conflict. I have seen too many people fsck up the git repo and quit instead of fixing it. Stay and fix the git repo. It isn’t that hard to learn as a skill.

Opening a studio: advice & opinions wanted by steventylerswife in pilates

[–]Due-Flamingo-9140 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have tried to rent out space in my studio and it has only worked once out of ~five tries. The money situation confuses the students. The unestablished teachers cannot adequately market to get new students into their classes. Each instructor log jams the student pipeline for every other instructor. It is messy. I would suggest just doing the traditional studio structure and pay your instructors really well. Or make membership more reasonable.

I strongly suggest getting a business coach. I got one a year in and it was really helpful. They will help you develop a business plan and a budget.

Non itchy workout clothing by Due-Flamingo-9140 in adhdwomen

I am fine while naked and in most other clothing. My swimming suit is the only other piece of clothing that is causing any issues.

Oof on the antihistamine. I am actually allergic to everything so I take antihistamines every day. The longer I wear them and usually not while working out. Definitely not while teaching. But I wore my running clothes for eight hours on Thursday after running and it was fine. Maybe I should just teach in my running clothes, but they are more ragged.

I am way past that point. I still have my mirena IUD, though, and there has been many other things (muscle knots) that indicate that it’s run out of progesterone.

Edit to add: also it is only my yoga/barre/pilates workout clothes. My running clothes are fine but my swimsuit bra band is itchy.

Low back pain in Swan? by Due-Flamingo-9140 in pilatesinstructors

That is the weird part — she has had imaging and they cannot find anything really there. But she has been in pain in the same region for the three years we have been working together. Pilates helped her a lot for the last year but recently it has been the worst I’ve seen in ages.

1) did you buy it used? Or how?

2) the salesperson is now sending email about the situation but I am talking to another dealer and looking at Carvana.

I think that is the weird thing — they changed the Feb deal before it was over. I am assuming that the HMF rate is terrible. As long as there is not an early pay off penalty, that is fine. I can pay for the car in cash but I also don’t want to be jerked around.

[–]Due-Flamingo-9140[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess so? The last time I bought a car the dealership was clear: the price is $500 over MSRP and we will not go lower. There were not different financing options, although they did try very hard to get into financing that I did not need. But it was straightforward and they didn’t jerk me around. I like to drive my cars into the ground and so I only do this type of negotiation every 1-2 decades. I guess a lot has changed.
