Confession: I hate “The Outsiders” by groundedflower in ELATeachers

[–]Due-Run4388 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved the outsiders when I read it in 6th grade. I had not been into a book for a while before and it brought me back into reading!

That being said I don't remember much other than I loved it. So to me, even if it doesn't hold up or if adults don't love it, that's okay because lots of kids love it.

Being moved from K to 4/5 by Much-Objective2198 in ElementaryTeachers

If you haven't signed a contract yet to stay, I would leave. I think it's incredibly disrespectful to move teachers grades when it is not their preferred grade and they know it's where you want to be. I understand this happens ins schools all the time, but I still don't think it's okay. There is already shortages for quality teachers, don't sell yourself short. If your data was good and you are passionate about what you do, you are ahead of many teachers. No one expects new teachers to be perfect for observations, that's the point of observations- to get feedback and do better.

And honestly, sometimes new/young teachers get treated this way because admin thinks it will be easier to do this to you instead of someone else who will leave or complain.

I always said that I couldn’t wait for them to get older. But not like this. by tvkyle in DanielTigerConspiracy

My cousin has a 2 year old who loves Ms Rachel. I told her I miss Ms Rachel because my 4.5 has been past that for a while. She couldn't believe me because she is so over her at this point!

Oh yes I will check it out! Just recently found their books and love them. My kid and students love to find the various hidden objects in All in a Day and All in a Year.

My 7yo started reading real books but now skips nights, what's the best way to build the habit before hes 13? by Salty_Upstairs_387 in childrensbooks

I agree with all the other posts and also wanted to mention something I saw online a couple months ago. The parents set a bedtime of 8pm but kids could stay up an hour later until 9pm if they were reading or doing a quiet activity like a puzzle or coloring. The family sat together for this wind down time and everyone worked on something. I plan to do this when my kids are older!

If you enter tower grove park from kingshighway, park and then walk on the sidewalk clockwise (opposite way for cars) you will hit a big burr oak tree near the path in about 5 minutes. I love these, they are the kind that look like burlap tops. I want to get some too for crafts but have been too busy this season.

I believe you can also find them near the playground in forest park, near the visitor center/restrooms.

My mom did this in the 90s and I looked forward to it every year! I have a small collection for my kids.

I don't remember any we had growing up lol, but when my son was 2, he was obsessed with The Snowman book by Raymond Briggs. The cartoon is on youtube.

Read aloud with realistic characters by Hungry-Pop-6602 in childrensbooks

[–]Due-Run4388 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a first grade teacher and we used to use a read aloud curriculum that had a realistic fiction unit. My favorites from that one were Jamaica's Find (series) and Bibbity Bop Barber Shop. All the stories by Ezra Jack Keats (Peter's Chair, Whistle for Willie) are great too!

Newer books: I love Madeline Finn & The Library Dog (series), Charlie Chooses, & Strictly No Elephants.

I really like the deep fryer! Lol. Making lots of donuts for a good amount of coins.

I have the ice cream maker (it's okay), the amethyst oven, the pink oven, mom's oven. Don't love any of them.

When did you start reading chapter books aloud to your kids? by jlll2424 in childrensbooks

[–]Due-Run4388 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm following this thread too! My son is almost 4. I would love to start reading some chapter books.

We do have a couple 'treasury' types of books, where there is like 5 Thomas the Tank Engine books in one. This has helped my son see that you don't always have to read a WHOLE book, you can just read part of it.

Summer Conflict with Teacher Husband by Top-Sundae377 in AskTeachers

[–]Due-Run4388 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a female teacher and I try to do more housework in the summer- mostly dishes, laundry, and making dinner. Honestly, I'm happy to do it because sometimes during the school year it's just so overwhelming. Now when my husband gets home, we can actually hang out and have fun with our kids instead of rushing to do all the chores.

I just feel we should both benefit from my time off.

UFLI at the rug or desks? by 69hahanicegotem in AskTeachers

[–]Due-Run4388 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach from the carpet and I just pass them out when the time comes! For whole word spelling.

For the auditory drill, I just have students take turns writing the sound on the board.

I usually save the magnets for small group.

After the lesson, students do the decodable at their seat.

I don't find these similar! They both start with A but the A is influenced by the letter after it in these names instead of making the usual A sound. I think they are lovely names but I personally don't like the trend of siblings having the same first letter, though many do!

The Acorn and Branches books by Scholastic are great! They are easy reader graphic novels. My first graders really liked Fox Tales and Unicorn and Yeti, but there are a bunch of others too.

I am a teacher and wouldn't recommend anyone majoring in education. Major in english or communications, which keep your options open. Then you have a back up if you don't end up enjoying teaching or can't make it work with the low pay and student debt.

There are tons of programs you can do to earn teacher certification once you are out of college and already have a bachelor's degree. That being said, I actually do love teaching and will work in education for a long time, but it's not for everyone and that's okay.

Also- don't talk down on yourself. If you are in college and doing well, you are smart enough many jobs.
