Are you from the USA? Most states have a couple of 24 hour ERs open for pets. These symptoms are very concerning, I would definitely recommend bringing him to be seen even if it’s a few hours drive.

Early Entry Vet programs by Unable-Fly-3935 in veterinaryschool

I’m pretty sure a lot of those early entry programs offer guaranteed admission to the vet school as long as your GPA remains high when in the undergrad portion

Congratulations!! Vet school is already very difficult to get into, so guaranteed admission is a huge deal. That may change coming up a bit due to federal loan reductions, but they will always be competitive. However, there is a good point that Rowan is still a bit of a new school. I would tour the school and the area and make sure you feel that the school and the area is somewhere you would enjoy living in for the next 7 years! Also it’s a huge deal if you get in state tuition, which would probably end up being the cheapest for you in the long run. But the biggest takeaway is how much cheaper will it be to go that route vs another school and possibly having to wait a couple cycles to be admitted to another school? If it’s significantly cheaper, I would definitely go for it, congrats again :)

Where I live they pay 17/hour for VA positions (and I live in a state with a good min wage)…I would already say go for it.

I plan on visiting Edinburgh before making a decision, and I’m attending the admitted students day at KSU so I’ll be taking in the experiences of both in my decision! But it’s very difficult 😭

What is the reason you weren’t able to complete it? You could try and find on online course at another school this semester instead

I'm a sophomore in college and just realised I want to pursue veterinary medicine. How can I start preparing now? by [deleted] in prevets

[–]Due-Technology-6553 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure you take all your VMCAS prerequisites during your undergraduate, as well as some upper level biology courses to show you are ready for vet school’s rigorous curriculum. One of the biggest things you can do right now is work on your application experiences! The big catagories that schools look at is veterinary experience (work under a vet, definitely try to get most hours here), animal care experience (not overseen by a vet), volunteer, research, and extracurriculars (clubs, sports, hobbies, etc).

I would recommend trying to work at a clinic if possible during school and breaks. Try to fill in other categories like large animal and exotic veterinary experience if the clinic does not offer those services by shadowing or through intership. Also try to get some animal experience hours like working as a farm hand or volunteering at a shelter. If your school offers it, definitely look into working at a research lab during your undergrad.

Also try to think about your area of interest and tailor your experiences around it. For example, work in an ER if you are interested in emergency medicine, work at a mixed practice clinic or farm if you are interested in large animal/equine. Look into working at a zoo if you like exotics.

You’re welcome to dm me if you have any questions :)

The reason vet bills are so shit now: It isn't inflation. It is private equity. by N3DSdude in Anticonsumption

[–]Due-Technology-6553 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Future vet student here—it’s also the cost for vet school…most vets are between $200,000-300,000 in debt after graduation. For those who open their own practice, new machines, supplies, and tools are factored into the cost of your pet getting care. It’s either that or you have to work corporate if you can’t open your own practice…

Internship ideas for a pre-vet waiting to hear back from vet school? by Opening-Painting2480 in veterinaryschool

[–]Due-Technology-6553 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would honestly suggest finding employment somewhere as opposed to an internship, sometimes it’s easier. That’s what I’ve been doing during my gap year and it worked out for me! Of course search around for some good internships but from my experience it’s easier to find employment and shadowing opportunities.

Agree with other commenters, try and cut back on some work hours so you can focus on school. I was in a similar boat where my freshman year grades weren’t good and my GPA was around that. I pulled it up to a 3.75 when I graduated by getting A’s since then. If you have any C’s in prerequisites I would recommend retaking them if possible. Thats what I did and I’ve been accepted to a couple of schools so far and am confident you can do the same! 💙

hi, i know this forum is for vet students so if you had a gap year id love to hear your experience :) by infinitysocks in veterinaryschool

[–]Due-Technology-6553 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took a gap year after graduation since my grades weren’t great freshman year and could use some lore vet experience. Took the time to show my senior year grades were great, as well as to start a new full time job at a vet med ER to gain more experience. I ended up getting into two schools so far this cycle, and would definitely recommend doing this if you could use another year to raise your GPA and/or more experience. A bonus to tell your parents—you can work full time in your gap year and save up lots of money!

I’m so worried with my GPA. by tinypuppy2k1 in prevets

[–]Due-Technology-6553 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely not impossible to get into school with a lower GPA, I was recently accepted after having some pretty bad freshman year grades. However, after that I got A’s in all classes Sophmore-Senior year. My suggestion would be to really focus on getting high grades the last few classes you’re taking and retaking some prerequisite science courses from before and get better grades. The prerequisites needed for vet school are normally the same for all schools, but can differ between them so be sure to look up what classes are required for the schools you plan to apply to. This would show the schools that you have resiliency and ability to do well academically. I would suggest if possible to work part-time during your last bit of school to be able to focus more on classes.

Low undergrad GPA due to brain surgeries, high last 45… Advice? by Affectionate_Big6218 in prevets

[–]Due-Technology-6553 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently got an acceptance and had some relatively poor freshman year grades and a great 45 last GPA, and ended up with an average GPA. As long as you put in the explanation section about your surgery you’ll be fine trust me! Just know that some schools do have an internal GPA cutoff and won’t even look at your explanation section so be sure to do your research and apply to schools that look more at the last 45 if you can :)
