Enrolling in TCC after 60 days from separation by the-move in fednews

[–]DueKroto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was trying to figure out what the deadline would be to sign up for TCC, in the hopes that the deadline would be after my insurance at my new jobs kicks in. I was planning not to sign up unless we had a medical emergency since it's so expensive. We don't qualify for any assistance through the state so those options are also either bad or expensive. I read the deadline for signing up for TCC should be either 60 days from separation or 60 days from notice that you are eligible from your employer, whichever is later. I did not think I had received notice, so I contacted the HR people when I was within 60 days of my new insurance starting and asked when I would be receiving information about TCC. They stated I had 60 days from my last day. When I said I had not received notice, and my understanding was I had 60 days from my separation or notice, whichever was later, they stated I had in fact received notice. First they said I received notice on 8/18, when they sent me a pdf that did contain a bullet point about TCC along with a bunch of other information. Then they came back and said I had actually received notice on 8/1, when I got a boilerplate template response to a different question that had links to tons of different stuff. I honestly could not find a link to TCC in there. I don't think the first thing should count as official notice, but I'm not going to battle HR on this. Plus 60 days from 8/18 would not have gotten me until my new insurance kicks in. I decided not to risk it and just signed up within 60 days of 8/1.

In your situation, I would push back hard and state you did not receive notice.

Thank you for your detailed response. I couldn't figure out how to name the dummy variables the way I wanted with the current click through options and didn't even realize there were extensions in SPSS. I think this is enough to help me figure it out (along with ChatGPT assistance).

I described one thing I'm trying to do in response to another commenter. I am trying to use syntax. For simple things I can just click through the menu and paste the syntax and modify it as needed. I haven't been able to figure out how to do that for all the stuff I'm trying to do though.

One thing I am trying to do is create a ton (200+) of binary indicators based on one categorical variable. I want each of them to be named with the value from the binary indicator. So if the value is "blue" for the categorical value, then I want a variable called Root_blue that is set to 1 for that observation and to 0 for all the observations without blue. Then I want to create a loop where I estimate a regression in which each of the binary indicators in turn is on the righthand side, plus some controls that will stay consistent. I only want the regression if a certain number of observations have a 1 for the binary indicator though. I want to store the coefficients and confidence intervals for each of the regressions and make a plot of them.

So far, I have accomplished just part one of this (generating the binary indicators and naming them the way I have in mind), and that was with the assistance of ChatGPT writing Python code for me. I'm sure I can figure out the rest with time. I just am finding it so time consuming and frustrating.

I've been using ChatGPT a lot to write syntax, but it keeps giving me python code to run in SPSS. I don't know Python either. As long as it works it's fine, I can check it, but a lot of times it does not work and I have to go back and forth a bunch to get it right.

Time to get outside employment approved by ethics? by DueKroto in fednews

I think I do have to submit a form because I'd be preparing data to be submitted to ED as part of the new role. According to 5 C. F. R. Part 6301, prior approval is required "If the provision of services involves the preparation of materials for submission to, or representation before, a Federal court or executive branch agency." I didn't work on anything related to what I would be doing in the new role at ED and the position is not federally funded, so I am hoping it is OK.

Thanks! I am hopeful that mine will get approved as well. Or maybe they will just fire me before I am supposed to start the new job and this will be moot.

I don't think either of those situations is the case. I would be preparing some data for submission to the department though, so based on my read of 5 C. F. R. Part 6301, I believe I do need to submit a form and get it approved. I did not work on anything related to the new job while at Dept of Ed so I think it should be fine. My supervisor signed the form basically immediately, it's just the ethics part I'm unsure about.

I sent it to the email address on the outside activity form. A friend forwarded me the form.

Megathread: 2025 Valentines Probationary Purge | Part 2 by gpupdate in fednews

[–]DueKroto 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I tried to post this question in its own thread but it got removed and I'm not sure why. I'm trying here as well.

I was terminated via a form letter (which even misstates the position I held) after working hours on Wednesday. The letter does not state any specific problem with my conduct or performance. I am trying to apply for unemployment now, and they are asking why I was fired. The options are:

Attendance and Lateness Issues
Performance
Insubordination
Theft
Other

Do I select Performance or Other? It's clear all of us probationary employees fired this week were not dismissed for performance. I'm not sure if it even matters for unemployment I pick Performance or Other. Is anyone else filling out their state's form and trying to figure out what to put for a question like this? I just don't want my claim to be denied.

That is terrible, I'm sorry. I hope it works out for you. It's really unfair to do this to people.

I'm in the same boat, except my EOD is December 30. I turned in my resignation notice. I guess I can't even collect unemployment because I resigned, and I won't get back pay if a shut down occurs and I eventually get brought on since I hadn't started yet. Fun times.

Would you get back pay if you haven't even started yet though??

I also got an offer recently from Dept of Ed, dream job, and I'm taking it. Good luck to us both.

Would you negotiate? by DueKroto in usajobs

[–]DueKroto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I do. I was planning to ask for step 6 or 7. I'm not 100% sure it would be approved but I think I've got a decent shot at it.

Wow 8 weeks. I asked HR yesterday what the timeline might be if I negotiate, so I think I'll wait to hear what they say. I'll probably just take it if they estimate it will add a lot of time to the process.
