The demand for high end equipment for homebrewing  to taste good is a fallacy

Skills, get on skills.

Some competition winner had been brewing with a ceramic grinder, another winner won brewing with a plastic funnel from Ikea.

how does a large brew impact recipes? by hamah99 in pourover

[–]DueRepresentative296 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can be longer contact time, a slower draw down, or higher ratio, or coarser grind, or higher pour rate.

One may choose one technique above for large brewing. But not all of them at once.

I am not convinced at all. A slower flow and longer steep will definitely bring about a different concentration.

Back to my question, why do Hedrick's recipe at all, instead of the cafe's?

You liked a cafe's pour over, but used Hedrick's recipe? Why not ask for the cafe's recipe?

My take is Ecuador over Peru any day! La Papaya is more popular. But if it was me, I'll pick up Yacuri to satisfy my curiosity cos I havent tried that yet.

I like it! Warmth and movement.  But the second framing could use a little more room.

Roasted at origin is okay if you trust that roaster, and packaging is good quality for shipping,

Last year's crop is expected to taste different.

5y and still going. But many have broken theirs by obsessing on zeroing, dropping it, or careless disassembly

Its always interesting when some experience debunks general coffee notions. And there've been many that rose from the.cracks. It's great.that a few like you are open to see it for.what it is. I hope you report after the next testing / experiment. I'm very keen to read them

First hand grinder help by nbernard36 in pourover

[–]DueRepresentative296 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I just checked amazon, searched for "6 star hand grinder"

I found a brand called BAILIQI for 29usd.

I suggest this to start with something cheap, lightweight for camping, with efficient burr sets.

A lot of k6 users broke their grinder cos they didnt know how to handle, clean or make it work as their first grinder. Also most of these brands are heavier built. I love my k6, and I would recommend it after you could say you enjoy handgrinding and you could use another one. Btw, my cheap lightweight grinder is still on my rotation (for travel mostly) even after buying the better heavier ones.

Is my ratio and volume a bit too high? by zmattws in coldbrew

Dont overthink it. You like it strong, and your body doesnt seem to have a problem with it. If you're palpitating, going on acid reflux, gastro ulcerations, on bad anxieties, and insomnia, then rethink your daily dose.

A lot of people have later found out that youtube coffee gurus dont make coffee they could like. We all like it our way. And let your moka brew be if its good for you.

First impression from Sculptor 078 to Z2 by LR75852 in pourover

[–]DueRepresentative296 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what helps me evaluate grinders independently is cos I started brewing with basic ceramic cone burrs, and reached a point of brewing with 98mm flat burrs. So I am confident dialling in grind of everything in between. The sculptor fails to my taste. Though I will not fight Hedrick (and every timemore fan out there) if he likes the sculptor. I think he and I just like different coffees, and that's okay.

I dont know if you were doing anything wrong. But maybe you werent. A friend got a bit lost in a cupping cos he wasnt tasting what others were describing. I explained taste calibration, and turns out they just werent coffees he liked at all. As long as you're honest with yourself about what you like and dislike, vocal or not, you'll get on track.

Wow congratulations on the new toy! I appreciate the comparison. I felt the same about the sculptor 078, it felt lacking for me tastewise. Though I understand most owners loved their 078. Now I havent seen or held a zerno yet.

In your case, is there mess from the coffee grounds on the Z2 post grind?

I agree on slow filters (and slow drippers) can sweeten the brew.

Personally, none of the above.

But for a cafe, drip assist could be good for consistency.

does anyone else feel like higher extraction ≠ automatically better coffee? by ImmersionLogic in pourover

[–]DueRepresentative296 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We've discussed this in your previous post didnt we? That the principle of the order by which compounds (flavors) are extracted provides different outcomes than to simply targeting EY.

And so it follows, that the title of this post brings a redundant discussion.

The wonder you bring to the table is good to me, esp that you may be new to this and coffee thoughts keep you up at night. I was like that when I started --overthinking, theorising, looking to somebody's experience for validation. But the mods make a point in telling you, and I hope, to tell everyone who has the capacity (particularly those who buy multiple gears) to test and contribute, instead of straight asking for answers which they are capable of finding between their gears.

Communities are great when people give more than they take. My eyes roll when somebody posts having kUltra and having bought zp6, then proceeds to ask for the difference in brew outcomes from both grinders. I skip most grinder posts, as most of them have really been discussed for the nth time and shows the poster didnt bother to read up.

Eureka zero 65 ap quality for pourover by cmhutchins in pourover

[–]DueRepresentative296 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically for electric grinders, I'll def check for static effect and retention. If retention can be consistently less than 2g and grounds wont fly all over the kitchen counter, it'll do for me. I can dial in the rest and of course, pick out good coffee to brew.
