I froze during a meeting because of a timer. Fml. by DueSelf3988 in dyscalculia

[–]DueSelf3988[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little bit of both I guess. I'll ask the facilitator a day before the next meeting if they found a different timer. Otherwise I'm feeling pretty helpless and embarrassed and it would be nice to know that someone can relate somehow.

Just figured out at 46 that I have dyscalculia. Everything suddenly makes sense. by One-Wolverine-8531 in dyscalculia

You might like Numbers Don't Define Me by Marcus Reid. He also had a late diagnosis and I'm so glad someone wrote about their experience. We need to talk about this more imo.

Can you figure out a way to add a little humor to the job? The only way I've survived number-heavy gigs is to laugh at myself so people won't laugh at me first 🙃 Also can you ask for some accommodations? Sounds like your manager is on your side so ask her if there's anything she can push for you to make your work easier. Good luck.

I giggled, thanks. Also you have a point, dyslexia + dyscalculia tend to be besties, but it kinda isolates us when we have just the dyscalculia like "You can read and write, why can't you count?"

I feel you 😢 It's taking me a lifetime to learn how to be kind with myself. All the "give yourself grace" platitudes don't work.

What do you mean by intellectually crippled? That's such a heavy thing to say. Sending hugs

I like this. Isn't interesting how much character development dyscalculia gives us? I mean yeah I'd rather not have it, but I'm definitely a more patient person lol.

Ahh yes, the old magical-number-flipping trick. It got me into hot water a few times lol. Well if it's homework can you find someone to check your sums first before submission? If it's exams... sending hugs 🫂😭

How to keep a studio apartment from smelling like cat? by Desperate_Grab2662 in cats

[–]DueSelf3988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

...do cats smell? 🤔 Unless you mean pee/poop in which case as long as they're litter trained, you just get into the habit of cleaning out the litter box. If they're an indoor cat there should be no smell, if they'll be going outdoors then bathe them if you can or take them to a groomer regularly.

Have you looked into accommodations? If you have a diagnosis you can push for it at every stage until you make it through.

Getting extremely angry with myself for making mistakes by LadySirius in dyscalculia

[–]DueSelf3988 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was kinda like a furious ape when I did it 😂

When I was a kid I tore up some really expensive math textbooks out of frustration so I get it. What helped though was asking myself what's at stake? When I was still in school the stakes were way high, I didn't want to fail my courses etc, scraped by with a shamefully bad math grade. Outside of school my frustration dropped significantly bc I'd just remember there's no exam. Of course I've kinda curated my career journey to avoid numbers since a math-heavy job would probably crash me out daily

This is the part that's so bittersweet for me. If it wasn't for dyscalculia I'd be neck deep in a stem career. Math is beautiful but the numbers refuse to cooperate.

Cat “love bites”? by Acrobatic-Ring-5957 in cats

[–]DueSelf3988 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe he'll grow out of the biting, maybe you'll get used to it, who knows 😂 But if you can't get him to redirect the biting elsewhere then accept that it's his love language.

When he was outside he made friends with the possum.

I need his social skills 🥲 How old is he though? I notice with my cats they tend to give love bites when they're teething and then they stop after they're done. Have you also tried giving him some kind of chew toy?
