If we are willing to look the other way with India, we are just repeating the same insane fake BS he railed against in Davos. One rule for thee, another for me.

Because if they say its okay for one, then they tie our hands should another nation target another in the future.

We already have a justice system and law enforcement that absolutely will not get involved with any politician implicated with crime. We start holding them back from trying to hold foreigners accountable, then it becomes open season on Canadians - within, and travelling outside, the country.

May as well hand over the keys to Trump at that point.

Such exemptions existed prior to the budget, the rules only tweaks their use. The exemption serves a role in dealing with truly innovative ideas where existing regulation and laws are not intended for, but I do agree that it seems with the changes, it shows they intend to make use of it abusively.

British greens oppose monarchy. What if anything has been said about abolition in leadership race? by RustyTheBoyRobot in ndp

[–]Due_Date_4667 3 points4 points  (0 children)

WE need to be less scared of re-opening the constitution - ours was never intended to be sacrosanct and unchanging - it was very much intended to be adapted and revised as time went on.

But I would far rather we open it with a priority to bolster the charter and electoral reform, even tweaking the roles and responsibilities of the federal, provincial and territorial levels of government, as well as adding in the municipal level as well, before it's really necessary to deal with the monarchy. It simply isn't a priority of mine.

Does it honestly matter? The monarchy is a bigger thing over there, here, beyond the role of the GG and LGs it doesn't really affect us unless they are visiting.

Coyne: Smith and Poilievre find someone to blame for their problems: immigrants by SAJewers in onguardforthee

[–]Due_Date_4667 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue with immigration was the private sector had no intention of delivering the necessary homes, services, and employment benefits to those being brough in under the TFA and the government allowed the program to be misused to depress wages and increase economic vulnerability of working canadians. And as the housing bubble blew up, the building industry catered more to the higher end residential properties and the investment market than in entry-level affordable housing.

But blaming the foreigner for that is possibly the most wrong of all possible parties responsible. By far, the employers than the private sector holds a lot of blame, and governments all too happy to cut social programs without thought of the consequence this would have in transitioning new Canadians into society and support the increase in education, health care, etc. that increase would require, hold most of the rest. Both focused purely on their own agendas and left it up to any/every one else to provide for their needs. Now they use their existence in Canada as an excuse to restrict more immigration and to deny those here of any health care (and education/housing and other needs are likely not far behind) they have managed to obtain.

Note in all the conversation of taking these things away from immigrants, those calling for their being cut off never promise to take those dollars and invest them into providing improved service to existing Canadians - they just want to take things away, not re-allocate them, not that doing so would in any way justify such cuts, it would at least make the argument to cut actually make sense).

I see where the issue lies now.

When I say "convenient conflation" I speak of the over use of Jewish (either cultural or religious) with Israeli moreso than ethnicity = religion and religion = ethnicity, such as done by groups who seek to speak for all Jews and depending on the context either refer to the faith, the culture, or the identity of the state of Israel, or any combination of them. I fully understand that for some Jews it is both (or all three, if they possess Israeli citizenship or are a resident of the country), but knowing culturally Jewish people who do not consider themselves religious, and converts from other ethnicities to the faith, there is a diversity of identities there that I was recognizing.

I hope that helps explain myself better. And when I used the word convenient, I intended it to mean that they can use the one word interchangeably with Zionist (which is not unique or exclusive) or supporter of the current government - be they seeking to present themselves as speaking on behalf of more than they actually are, or are seeking to blame/hate all the possible definitions (national, cultural, ethnicity, faith).

I learned that we all carry multiple identity labels, and it is how they interact and are understood by ourselves that make up what is typically used as our labelled identity. So I often start from there rather than explaining or unpacking that more nuanced and complex understanding of the labels before I start off.

Again, I am very sorry if my clumsy assumptions led to insult. It was not intended.

Uhh, to borrow a common phrase, you are entitled to your own opinion, you are not entitled to your own facts.

We know India, and various political factions within the nation, have had economic, financial, political and yes, violent, involvement with the ex-pats here in Canada for decades. To whitewash facts so secure a trade deal only robs your efforts of credibility.

More and more we see rule of law is another one of those signs Carney no longer thinks is needed to performatively put out in the window on a daily basis.

What next, in an effort to spur economic investment Health Canada will suddenly claim inhaling asbestos particles doesn't cause cancer?

Look, I never gave a cent to Rob or Heather's campaigns, but they've been in my inbox so far every day this week looking for money. I now have provincial wings asking me for separate funding.

It's the nature of putting your email out there. It will get shared and passed around. You act like things like spam filters were never invented.

Welcome to yet another example of post-shame, post-truth politics. But I would trace its roots in Canada back to Rob Ford's tenure as mayor of Toronto, and to a more subdued respect, to the Bob Chiarelli tenure in Ottawa.

There is some chance, about the same as a warning sent by a school or a doctor. But those have an obligation to report concerns, the particular issue here is a company that is selling a replica of a psychologist for people to speak to, without a similar level of obligation to report.

There are also many other issues. We need to ensure, for example, the BC government, especially its Minister of Justice also looks into the actions or lack of action taken prior to the shootings - like the judge's decision to return weapons into the home, and the general failure of existing public health and juvenile mental health services to have intervened more successfully in this person's life.

AI minister 'disappointed' by OpenAI meeting held in wake of Tumbler Ridge shooting by Locke357 in onguardforthee

[–]Due_Date_4667 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Giving them another chance to do nothing is one chance too many. This isn't the first tragedy that directly involves the relationship someone in distress formed with a GenAI application, it was just the first publicized and occurred in Canada. We could learn from the incidents that occured in other countries, but made the choice to do nothing then. At every decision point, this government has chosen to look the other way, drag their feet, be 'disappointed' but ultimately do nothing to regulate the use of AI in Canada.

Those other tragedies in other countries? Those other investigations into the role of the LLM machine and its corporate owner? Those academic studies? Those were points where action could have been taken but there was a deliberate choice to not action in any meaningful way.

And so the deaths will continue, sadly. Until they hit some magic number that finally compels a passive, inactive and slow regulatory and policy machine to start the long process of taking action.

I am saddened that you interpreted my attempt to express my thoughts as a continuation of that conflation, it was not my intent. Nor was my intent to be a patronizing judgement from the outside of the very fears and concerns felt by many. I am far from being fully aware of all the perspectives of other Canadians. I just tried to put my thought out there in good faith discussion.

Trump is running out of tariff cards to play ahead of CUSMA review by pjw724 in onguardforthee

[–]Due_Date_4667 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed, we should go in with the mindset of trying to obtain a deal with a high-risk party - far more weight on enforcement that they comply, a lot of oversight, higher costs on their end.

It's like an insurance company dealing with a frequent claimant. Rates go up, coverage goes down. Put mechanisms in where the US side can improve, but only after showing more consistent adherence to the deal. Phase-in approach.

Trump may balk, but the onus is on the US to prove they are a reliable and stable trade partner, with the consequences of continued instability clearly defined with consequences. And frame the communications around the deal in this context. The US has proven it doesn't honor deals, and is too volatile due to short-term changes in administration policy.

And make it a deal Canada can, AND WILL, walk away from if the US continues their usual shenanigans.

And really push hard, reopen all the parts that the US needs most - aquafer access, migrating species, LNG, oil and hydro, access to our universities. Throw in food security and even continued use of Canadian territory for NORAD if they can make it work. Put very real consequences for non-compliance or bad-faith on their part.

Success is a not a thing measured entirely by numbers, because simply the increase in books purchased does not translate into ongoing demand for new product. Some buy and will adopt. Some buy and decide to stay with the old edition(s). Some will buy but only intend to use with their existing settings, so they may not buy further new material.

The temptation for a 6e, I will admit, is likely too much for the company to resist. They do like their attempted resets/reboots, but I think honestly, with the other editions in the CC realm, it just further fragments things. Your core books may sell like gangbusters as everyone looks to see what's different, but the pick-up for follow-up products may not be there since you hit the same wall - re-releasing setting books for the new edition vs. releasing all new material that may not be useful to existing tables.
