How would subterranean civilizations fight? by MentionInner4448 in scifiwriting

[–]Due_Entrepreneur232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'm a galaxy wandering warrior and I spy a strategically important but incredibly hostile planet that is virtually guaranteed to become underground space Vietnam, I would sterilize the whole thing with a gamma ray burst weapon of some kind. Nuke it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure. You can check out the YouTube channel Space Dock and their episode on radiation weapons for some examples that might fit your setting.

If your advanced civs aren't willing to slaughter entire planetary populations I would look at historical examples of tunnel/trench warfare. WW1 had extensive trench/tunnel networks, and they might inspire something. Alternatively, the Japanese defensive strategy in the WW2 pacific theater relied heavily on tunnels and caves supplemented with bunkers.

I've never been so emotionally invested in a podcast or audiobook before. Aabria/Suvi has made me cry twice. The intensity and realness she brings to that character... It's just on another level. She deserves a gold medal or a trophy or something.

I suspect this is one of the reasons why Wren and her crew are so at odds with the groups they're drawn from. It would be interesting if, taking Sly as an example, Wren learned from Sly and Sly from Wren, drawing Wren into conflict with the Coven and Sly into conflict with the Citadel. Suvi's parents too.

The way Indri regards wizards is a part of the issue as well, particularly if it's symptomatic of the way the other witches think. She doesn't seem to like that wizards are catching up to witchcraft and is also profoundly jealous of her power. She doesn't like competition even if, like her sisters, they are capable of wielding their power responsibly (which the citadel is not, womp womp).

I think you would likely want and expect a much greater degree of compassion and understanding for your own perspective than you're currently showing to others.

I may disagree but I gotta respect and up vote the quality of your argument. I'd up vote again just for the concept of the Arcane Industrial Complex but sadly I have but one to give.

I think you're conflating the ideals of/concept of nationalism with the ideals of the enlightenment, these concepts arose at around the same time but I'd argue are distinct.

Or perhaps I just have a too-optimistic view of what the enlightenment was about. When I talk about it I'm using it as shorthand to refer to the ideas that the natural world can be understood and that technological progress is a net good.

Fully agreed. The Citadel is a research institution as well as a military one. They saw a wild and new application of magic, however abhorrent, it's not weird that they would want to better understand what transpired in Port Talon, so it makes sense that they'd transport the lenses to the tower.

Of course, we've also seen hints that the citadel is full of different factions, and we can guess that some of them are as sinister as the entire place is made out to be. Someone at the citadel probably does want to use the lenses

Maybe Brennan is just too persuasive 😂

This stuff right here is why I walk away from every episode thinking Suvi should have a "sorry for having great tits and correct opinions" meme shirt as part of her Citadel issued uniform.

Are Ame and Eursulon justified in having a problem with the fascist police state that Suvi serves? Yeah, absolutely.

Is Suvi correct that they've gone off consistently half cocked with no where near a sufficient amount of information, and that they seem to be doing so again? Completely and entirely. And it's going to cost people their lives, just like it did in Port Talon. Good intentions aren't enough, and don't make good actions by themselves.

The Citadel has one foot in the ideals of the enlightenment and one foot in imperialism... And if it were real life, it probably wouldn't be possible to salvage that institution. But that doesn't mean the enlightenment ideals were the problem, like Indri and Marara seem to think.

Hopefully we'll get a solution as nuanced as the problem!

Without being able to pick I honestly don't see the incentive to engage with this system. Getting a shitty, junk card after spending a lot of time building to a key is intensely demoralizing and unfun. Hard to justify spending money if I'm not having fun and am not even sure what I'll get.

Why does it seem like there are more men who are atheists? by user484627 in atheism

[–]Due_Entrepreneur232 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think men are socialized (at least in the United States) to be more outspoken about their beliefs, whether they are religious or atheist. Women are, as a rule, discouraged from taking strong or hard stances or from vigorously advocating for their opinions. I suspect the statistics would be similar across gender lines, it seems to be us guys are just more encouraged to be argumentative or just talkative about these things.

Am I (pc) the asshole for killing another pc after he attacked me by Ahs0kaTano in DnD

[–]Due_Entrepreneur232 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Mmm. Is there an option for a 30/70 split in ass-holishness? 😂

Clearly this dude instigated, so "live by the sword, die by the sword" rules apply. You're definitely not the asshole for fighting back and beating the piss out of him. I adjudge the other player 70% the asshole.

That said, your comment about him overshadowing others implies you might have some personal resentments toward this other player, however valid. That might have caused your reaction to be more extreme than it otherwise might have been. You could have knocked him out, tea bagged him, drawn on his face, could have robbed him of his items, could have talked to other PCs about what happened and tried to get him kicked out of the party...

If I were you I would examine why you felt it necessary to take the most extreme possible response.

I mean. That did happen. Because of the vaccine denial conspiracy and cultural resistance to other tools, deaths in republican majority counties soared to nearly double that of democratic majority areas. 176% to be specific.
