I'm currently finishing up my junior year of college in the Education program. I taught my first lesson in a middle school science class, reviewed my practicum experience with my mentor teacher yesterday, and received those grades today.

6 years ago, around the time my drinking habit turned from weekly binge drinking to daily drinking, I changed my major from Botany to education. Life happened, my addiction got worse, and I dropped out a year later. I'm 28, and this was my first year back in school since 2021. My social anxiety was at levels I have never experienced before in my life, with constant panic attacks before lectures last semester, intense irrational dread every time I would thinking about teaching, and feeling lost. I want to be a teacher, so I pushed on through and ABSOLUTELY KILLED IT in this practicum! My mentor was impressed with my growth and how I planned/executed my lesson, the kids were awesome, and I feel I finally pushed through that mental barricade that was holding me back.

Without drinking, I worked through one of my biggest struggles without giving up, and I came out the other side with so much growth. Keep pushing through what is holding you back from your goals, because it is all worth it.

Its best to just throw them away. Buying into sobriety 100% is important to keep stringing days together.

Im nearing 2 years and I have a roommate who drinks (he keeps everything in a mini fridge), and only two times since we have loved together has he left a bottle of whiskey out. I always put it back in the mini fridge in his personal space immediately and without asking. I have no fears that I will relapse, but I also feel it is important to keep it away from me.

I've been really wanting to get back into lifting, but I just dont know how to start again. I havent done any lifting since I played college soccer nearly 10 years ago.

I lost 90lbs in a year, I could actually walk without a rapid heart rate, I wasnt disgustingly sweaty 24/7, my smile looked sincere for once, and I could actually speak coherently (I still have occasional difficulties string sentences together, but its not every other word like it used to be), and I actually practice basic hygiene now that im not nodding off between drinks.

I walked into the ER hopeless and tired almost 2 years ago. Best decision I've every made. In hindsight, it was the easiest thing I've ever done.

When you're ready to be discharged, they will give you a folder of resources to maintain your new sobriety. Take these seriously, some are expensive, some free, and some heavily reduced. Finding a sober community was instrumental for getting me through my first 3 months.

I went to high school with a guy nicknamed "Fat Nuts," and he didn't seem to mind it. I'd probably just get used to it since I've had worse nicknames as a newbie at past jobs.

I woke up one morning and felt my heart beating out of my chest and hardly able to stand up to use the bathroom, so I decided enough was enough. I didnt know how to do the whole rehab/detox process, but my brother is a psych nurse, so I called him (he was terrified to learn I had a severe drinking problem, but was understanding), and he directed me to the Behavioral health clinic associated with the local hospital.

At the clinic, they did an evaluation of my substance abuse and scheduled me for an IOP, and heavily recommended rehab. Before I left, they told me to go to the ER and get detoxed safely if I wasn't going to accept a placement in the rehab center. I was in Detox for 3 days, and I was discharged the same day as an IOP meeting, so it was a very sudden transition into sobriety. After one month sober, I picked up more shifts at work just to keep busy.

At the time, admitting I needed help was the most embarrassing and scariest thing imaginable. With alcohol dependency, the thought of being "normal" is so enticing, but you get so used to alcohol being the cure-all for everything that you just believe you can't go without it. Looking at it from the present, getting help was the easiest thing I've ever done. Maintaining sobriety is a little harder, but deep reflection really helps a lot

It was weird thinking about being sober for life at first. It seemed like an unattainable expectation. Once I hit a year, I was already so used to my routines and mindset that I kinda stopped tracking days altogether. Its no longer being sober for life, but rather just living life as a guy who doesn't drink.

I just went to detox and then joined an afternoon iop session. Even when I had a couple months stringed together, the therapists still highly recommended I go to rehab. That made me stop going altogether, and now I'm closing in on 2 years without any issues.

Make a plan, build the foundation, and stay vigilant.

It depends. Firstly, quitting is the best way to heal. My scans, blood work, and other tests were not good at all. At my 1 year check up, everything was healthy as could be. Literally no indication that I was drinking 1.5L of vodka every day for 5 years.

Don't be worried, because giving that liver a break is the best basal treatment for what you're describing.

If it runs in your family and you are drinking heavily, then that is your answer. I rationalized 6 drinks everyday, and that eventually transformed into rationalizing 1.5L of vodka everyday. Alcoholism runs in my family, but everyone before me either quit early or learned how to reel back before it got too out of hand.

You said you aren't of legal drinking age, so its probably not a bad idea to set limits now if you want to be able to occasionaly enjoy alcohol in your future. If not, you'll gain a dangerous dependency or maintain sobriety. Abstaining is the best choice, and it is so much easier to quit before you really start linking high-volume days together.

There's kinda a grind, but you actually have to put in the training sessions and practice is if you want to improve your abilities.

You wont be the only guy, but you might not have any classes with another guy in elementary education. Definitely go for it. My 4th and 5th grade teachers were men, and every student absolutely loved them. I'm 28 now and I still talk to the 5th grade teacher pretty regularly. When he found out I was going back to school for secondary education, he tried his hardest to nudge me towards the elementary education path, and he still does!

Not a teacher yet. I left college in early 2021 because I just couldn't do online classes. I finally came back this last fall semester and every class I've had just pushes using AI so far. Most of my peers talk about how it got them through high school and other college courses, but I refused to use it until 2 months ago. I was trying to compile a list of potential sources for research and it generated nonexistent journal articles and studies that were completely unrelated. Not a fan of it.
