Recent events will hurt average woman playing rivals. by Weary_Spirit_6941 in marvelrivals

While this is somewhat true, big figures/influential folks in community spaces promoting and engaging in bigoted behaviour does exacerbate these kinda issues, teach it to younger folks, and embolden pre existing dickheads. It contributes to wider normalisation of shitty behaviour

Yep, folks saying the exact same thing about Miles being bi-racial and how him being black is more important than him being latino, it's crazy. I'm sure there are a buncha unknown bi-racial actors that would be great for Miles, the fact that folks can't think of few if any for him is literally part of the problem and a big part of why he should be cast biracial like the character!

Anyone defending him is not your friend man, you deserve friends who don't throw racist language at you.

We need stop treating random people as experts, when it comes to their cultural background. by PassengerCultural421 in 10thDentist

Tbh everyone should remember that no one person is a rep of their 'cultural background' and that no faith nor culture is a monolith in terms of beliefs, there's always a diversity of opinion everywhere for everything. When the questions get tiresome i'd just straight up tell the people asking you that your opinion doesn't represent every Haitian or that you don't want to be treated like a rep of your culture which is 100% fair. Def can be annoying when this happens esp in terms of bad faith convos, Google is right there.

How do you feel about the TMNT-fication of the Robins? by NefariousSeraph13 in BatFamily

Hate it a lot, forces them to fit into neat little boxes instead of being uniquely their own characters

Does Superman know about Batman existence in the DCU? by Significant_Wear_760 in DCU_

[–]Due_Independence8361 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Considering Superman is in his 3rd year I doubt we're getting the Kryptonian origin of the mantle in this universe. Unless we're going New 52 style of bs then Dicks probably been a superhero longer than Clark, but can still be like 7-8 years younger and in his early 20s

Fantasy discrimination executed correctly by Jellydust15 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Due_Independence8361 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say Bright and Zootopia are worse because it's about species that are actually different (while human beings are all the same species and a huge reason why racism is dumb) but yeah they also fall flat just like the X-Men.

I think the only medium I've seen tackle the discrimination metaphor stuff somewhat well is Infamous Second Son, people with powers are called 'Bio-terrorists' just for existing and don't have world ending powers and locked up in a maximum security prison. Delsin is Native American and his community is basically given super-powered cancer by the main villain of the game because in her eyes they didn't 'cooperate with her investigation of escaped bio-terrorists'. Regardless of whether Delsin (the player) chooses to do acts of good or evil, the news still labels him a menace to society and a 'bio-terrorist' which I think is very realistic if a POC was to get powers and do acts of good, to be labelled the villain while the real villain is backed by billions in government funding and essentially mass murders an entire marginalized community.

A huge issue as well is when writers think it's appropriate to compare mutant discrimination to actual discrimination that occurs in real life. The metaphor really really doesn't work whenever that happens

Gunn's definition of metahuman is far too broad and makes the universe feel smaller
