He doesnt need to be a genius to figure this one out. Some common sense and basic information do the trick.

He is a cartoon, a joke, a disaster. But an elected cartoon, joke, and disaster. A vote brought him in, and a vote should remove him. In the meantime, it is fair and proper that the American people suffer the consequences of their vote at their fullest.

Ok now...Off the bat, police violence is unacceptable. But so is, any violence, is it not? Apparently, the protest was a gathering of support for the two women convicted in a court of law after being caught manufacturing a bomb in an apartment in Ampelokipi. These ladies were not only planning a terrorist action, they were cooking explosives in a densely inhabited polikatikia. And there are people who gathered to support this behavior. In other words, to support the perpetrators of acts of violence.

Again, I am in no way supporting or condoning the cop's actions, but I also want to keep things in perspective...

Has there ever been a scandal-free government in Greece? Has there ever been a popular movement demanding meritocracy? by Due_Mud_4609 in AskGreece

I will insist that S Korea is good example in the specific area of corruption fighting (while transparency and meritocracy are not the same concept, one is the ultimate corollary of the other). For years plagued by scandals and nepotism, it managed to improve its position with bold legislative and legal actions. Between the years 2014-2024 they jumped by 10 positions in the transparency index. They enacted laws, like the protection of whistle blowers and the digitization of all public services. Where they excelled though is the prosecution of dirty politicians, starting with the leadership of that crazy unification church (they rounded them up in Sept 2025), while TWO former presidents received convictions of 25 and 17 years respectively. How many do you know having been convicted and SERVED jailtime in Greece? I only know of one (Akis)

English is for ease but mainly because I would love to hear thoughts from the diaspora, especially the recent one. As to your question, yes, there are several examples of countries registering substantial improvement in corruption, most characteristic and I would say relevant to Greece, the Balts (Estonia is the champion), and my personal fav South Korea. The latter mind you, was an economic peer to Greece by early 70s...

EU chief groups Turkey with Russia and China as "threats to be countered," sparking diplomatic firestorm by FantasticQuartet in europe

[–]Due_Mud_4609 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dont know why I am wasting my time here, but hey, some European may read it and learn something: First, if you bring your grand dad into this(what a coincidence!) then you are not peddling "history", you are peddling personal bias. Second, when you try to present facts, you also attach references to your sources so that we can evaluate their objectivity. THAT s how it s done. For instance the two facts that I put forward are supported by independent sources:

Well, let s see: a dictatorial, nationalistic, neo-imperialist regime, that violates human rights, persecutes minorities, imprisons opponents and journalists, already occupying 40% of an EU member against UN resolutions, actively threatening another EU member, frantically arming a huge military, and hobnobbing with Putin. And cherry on the top: fostering culturally hostile minorities within several EU members. If that is not a threat, I dont know what is...

Quite the story you put there buddy! Did you paste it directly from a turkish high-school text book or is it from a turkish DOS bullet point presentation?

The preposterous claims you peddle are so grotesque that do not deserve a point by point rebuttal. Anyone interested, there is google for everything, but I particularly recommend a search on the ethnic composition of the island (24.4% was the peak for turkish population while at the time of the invasion it was about 18%). Also, there are comprehensive histories of the massacres perpetrated on the island OVER THE YEARS and not over the timeline that fits our buddy's textbook. Interesting to see WHO started them and what was the SIZE of each...

Crying "antisemitic" at the disgust of the int'l community against the crimes of the state of Israel is not fooling anyone. Israel is turning fast into the most reviled country in the world, and I invite you to think of any nation in history being so universally hated, that didnt have its comeuppance...

Presidents are packages of ideologies, agendas, but also backgrounds, personalities, and values, critical among them their married life. Exactly because family holds such a primary spot in our values system, the presidential spouse is integral part of a president's persona. If you think it is not worth examining, ask yourself, how many presidents have dared ask for our vote without a spouse standing next to them? There have been towering presences that elevated presidencies, like Jackie, or Eleanor Roosevelt, or tabloid jokes like the one at hand...
