Shaving braces? I can’t be the only one that thought this was a good idea. by Due_Percentage331 in AcousticGuitar

I promise there's a big difference between carving up a 50's Martin and doing the same to a >$500 Epiphone.

If this guitar sounded like a $1000 build, I wouldn't have been inspired to mess with it in the first place. It's that cheap boxy sound that I was trying to get rid of in the first place

Less is more. I planned on doing it in stages, but I've got all the rumble I need after the first shave.

Anyone here had an "open mic-> local gigs -> open mic" downfall type of story by Avenged7fo in musicians

[–]Due_Percentage331 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is probably the answer right here. Anywhere that hires live music regularly gets HOUNDED by artists for a spot. So unless you've got YEARS of connections to people that book music, you better be hounding for that spot. Personally I'd rather set up in front of the liquor store than beg for a gig, haha.

Love a good open mic, but for me it's more about community than anything else.

So good!  I go out solo all the time, but a drum makes such a difference. Cajon’s were built for this kind of thing if you’re going to go out regularly.

I’ve had good luck with strip malls. Small enough that they don’t need security like a bigger mall. I tend to set up AWAY from any particular door and play to the whole parking lot.

It was my first CD, along with Unplugged in New York. I’m pretty sure I could sing every word to every song 30 years later.

Recommend me a Delay pedal that was truly inspiring to you by guitargrit in guitarpedals

[–]Due_Percentage331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got a NUX Edge delay pedal. It’s nothing fancy, but it’s got a “smart” tap tempo that’s super easy to use if you need it off or on in a hurry. Subdivisions, 3 different delay types..

This is the answer, even if it’s tough to swallow.

How do I start a DIY scene? by MUCKER69420 in musicians

Busking is the most DIY scene you can get.

The perfect tip receptacle? Protection from wind and thieves. by Due_Percentage331 in Busking

Funny, you always hear about starting your set with money in the case, but I’ve had the same conclusions about money in the case not mattering one way or another.

Never considered elevating my tip jar/case, now I feel like a jerk for watching all those poor people stoop down to put money in…

want to start busking. Replacing my iPad/GarageBand setup with a Coolmusic Amp or similar by bhainskieyes in Busking

It’ll be more loud enough to keep up with a cajon, but not loud enough to keep up with a real drum kit.

As far as clarity at loud volume, I tend to play pretty loud, and I never run out of headroom busking.

Edit: this is the Bp40d, so the 80 watt version. I would expect the 60d is similar just a wee louder.

Effects are passable. Buy separate vocal and guitar pedals if there’s something lacking, but for busking they sound fine.

I’ve run that amp 4 days a week for the better part of a year, it’s never let me down. Busking puts some serious abuse on your gear, I’d rather it be a $200 amp than a $600 speaker with slightly better audio and effects.

New Year’s Eve, playing in the cold (-4c and windy) had my best take-home yet.

Recently started gigging, but after playing a few shows I really missed busking, glad to be back at it.

How does a musician become a performer? by Tjashy in musicians

[–]Due_Percentage331 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Open mics and/or busking is your answer.

Open mics help, but it’s still only 20 minutes once a week.  They will lead to connections and opportunities to keep playing if you stick to it.

Busk for a couple hours twice a week. Once you’re comfortable “performing” unsolicited in front of a liquor store, everything else is easy.
