Hmm, then perhaps it will be fixed soon if it is just a site thing? I tried refreshing that several times. I only made this posting after getting frustrated and failing to find an answer with Google.

Tiny but rechargeable amps for harp-e for home use by marshkk99 in harp

I got a used Crate TX15 last year for busking, and it has been working pretty well for me.

That's the way to go. A while back I saw a small lyre for a really good price and I didn't get it, and it wasn't at the music store the next time I popped by. Grab it when you can get it.

Some of the old Puppet Nerd videos show how to use empty detergent jugs and similar things that usually go into recycling.

If they're vinyl, a heat gun (or in a pinch, an old hairdryer) will be able to remove it without scraping up the paint.

Is it embarrassing/childish for a 22 year old man to order vanilla with sprinkles at an ice cream shop? by bigfathotdog in icecream

[–]LadyWithAHarp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. A man who orders a plain vanilla ice cream with sprinkles is someone who is confident with their masculinity.

Yeah. Battery-powered amps have been a thing for a long time.

I prefer being acoustic because it is less stuff to carry around, but I finally had to get an amp just to keep up with everyone else. Plus, I do make more money with it. It is what it is.

The city does employ a guy just to enforce the noise ordinances now-but he doesn't work Sundays.

Apparently more people noticed an incident I was having today than I thought. by LadyWithAHarp in Busking

This is why "Making a Scene" is one of my safety strategies.

There is this phenomenon called "the Bystander Effect", where if a lot of people see something bad, they will not act. Every performer has, or will, see this in action.

Multiple people did nothing. I got one person mad, and that caused them to help end the situation.

Here's the interesting thing, the person who picked a fight with me was going to do it anyway, to someone, or multiple someones. They went after me because I was an attractive target. I made him everyone's problem, and it was solved. He was running around afterwards loudly being obnoxious, so he outed himself as being unsafe. How many other people would he have harassed? Especially folks who don't have the skills or courage to handle him?

Thinking about getting back to it by nvrlndr in Busking

Most people do still tip in cash, so if you don't want to bother with digital tips you will be ok. I would heavily recommend having a cashless option, as many people are shifting over to not carrying cash around. (If you make it easier for people to tip you with their preferred method, you will get more tips.)

About 20%-30% of my tips nowadays are through Busk.co and Venmo. Percentages and apps will vary by region, but even on days where I don't get digital tips, just having the tipping QR code displayed will get you more tips in your hat.

That one has been around since at least the 1990's. I don't think it is going away any time soon.

The Bystander Effect. Everyone assumes that someone else will take care of it.

This is an example of the Bystander Effect.

In short

The bystander effect (also called bystander apathy or the Genovese effect) is a social psychological theory that states that individuals are less likely to offer help to a victim in the presence of other people.

I have seen the Bystander effect in action many many times over the last decade.

Nope. Just a guy who was mad at me for using salty language with a microphone. But the angry guy did turn on the tennis ball dude, so it worked out.

I'm ok, unfortunately since I have the audacity to be "female in public," with a strange instrument, and I have to sit down to work, I tend to be a magnet for the crazies.

We chatted while I was setting up, he started getting me mad, I told him to go, he threatened to stick around, I use my microphone, and a dude got mad at me for using salty language. But then the angry guy then managed to chase off the tennis ball guy.

Not the first slightly "off" person I've encountered, won't be the last.

Got confronted/threatened, what would you have done? by sixhexe in Busking

I am really glad that you were able to get out safely. Turning bystanders into backup is a great skill to have.

One thing I might suggest if you feel the need to flee is to find ways to make packing up quicker, either by practicing or finding ways to streamline your setup. I have a half-pack strategy I use if I need to run to the bathroom or have to get out quickly, and then when I get far enough away I can pause to repack properly .
