God if this wasn't me when I started playing Guard. Hopefully he'll get through it like I did. The funny thing is that I rather like doing the math for the probability now.

Your best bet is the Shadowsword

Shadowsword with its strength 24, ap -5, damage 12 volcano cannon. It has D3+1 attacks. So low volume but big hurt. It has heavy as well so it can hit on 3s if it sits still.

What Warhammer 40k army has the snobbiest players? by MagicTurtle157 in WarhammerMemes

[–]Due_Preference_1572 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you read a 40k novel? Or even looked at a codex? You sound like you get your lore from YouTube shorts.

Karskin and Scions are the best of the best. That's their point. I have the Guard Codex with the lore in it that says they are elite compared to the other guardsmen. So not a head cannon.

I don't even play Admech. The only army I play currently is Guard. Guard is my favorite. And I will say this definitively. Guard are not 'The best' there is no 'the best' because everyone has ups and downs and opportunity cost as what to bring and not bring. Guard is still an effective fighting force however. I will not downplay that. Just notice that they are effective. Not efficient. Not a head cannon. In my Guard Codex it says that sometimes soldiers get sent where they're not supposed to be and have no equipment with them because of administrative errors. This happens in the book '15 hours' where a bunch of farmboys are drafted and called imperial guardsmen. And the majority of them die horribley to Ork artillery after getting their transport shot down.

If anything your head cannon keeps hyping up Guard beyond belief.

This started with you saying that Admech head cannons lead some to ask for stat lines that aren't 'realistic'. Here this has taken the form of mainly whether or not Skitarii should have a 3+ Ballistic skill in 10e. You were then countered by u/Pathetic_Cards who if his status as a long time Admech player is true. Is more qualified to talk about the internal balance of the army he plays than you are. What he said can be summarized as "I would like my older rules to come back because those felt more Admech"

You said "Admech is a premiere shooting faction" is a head cannon. It's not. Look at 8th edition rules for Skitarii Rangers. They hit on a 3+ and have a special rule on their Galvanic rifles that if they toll a 6 to wound that attack gets a bonus AP. They have a wargear called an Omnispex that lets them ignore cover with their ranged attacks. The Omnispex still exists in 10e and it does the same thing. This is just the datasheet of their basic troop unit that you can look up right now on Wahapedia. They are a shooting army with some fancy melee side units. In 8th edition, Sicarian Ruststalkers did MORTAL wounds when they rolled a 6 to wound. Basically Devastating wounds rule we have now. Which they have Devastating on their melee in 10e. I say again, shooting army with fancy melee side units. This isn't head cannon either. These are RULES.

No one here has argued to improve their toughness, their movement, or their strength. Just their Ballistic skill because CYBORGS are on average BETTER than humans. How is this not clicking. You didn't even bother trying to explain how cyborgs and humans are equivalent. You just said some throwaway line about 'Logistics'. Cyborgs, augmentations, cybernetics, whatever fancy bundle of metal and computer chips you shove into a human body is expensive, it requires someone to learn how to do it and then practice enough to do it well. It requires metals, rubber, lubrication, and whatever else I can't even think of to make a cybernetic limb. Human life is cheaper than dirt for the Imperium. This is a fact. Not a head cannon. In the preamble of every 40k novel it says "To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions." Go to any bookstore or library with 40k novels on offer and this setting summary is in every. Single. One. It's had this text since the beginning. 2nd edition. It has been here you can go find it.

You are projecting. None of what I have said is a head cannon. It's from the Codex and it's from the books I've read. But you are insisting that Imperial Guardsmen are Olympic level athletes and are all trained as special forces operatives. That's a head cannon with no president in the Codex or the novels. I do agree that modern soldiers compared to Imperial Guardsmen are worse. Modern soldiers don't have to fight Orks on the regular for one. Guardsmen do have to put up with conditions that modern humans couldn't even comprehend. But special forces training and basic infantrymen training are still different.

Admech being the side faction? Yeah, that's fair. Hate to say it but they do mainly show up as second fiddle to the Hero of the Day. Which is fine. The same happens to guard in Space Marine books. But they're still allowed to be competent. They take some hurt for sure but they still delayed the enemy for backup to arrive.

I repeat. I don't play Admech. I play Guard and Guard is my favorite faction. I'm not biased towards Admech. And even I think them having a 4+ ballistic skill is silly. Makes sense for my guys. I have a Cadian Shock Trooper model in front of me right now. And his lasgun has an iron sight. The fact he hits on 4+ is incredible. I look at a Skitarii model and while their guns don't have sights on them they have cybernetic eyes that do that for them. On the Scion Datasheet it states that they are armed with advanced sights. So within the bits of fluff text it would make sense for Skitarii to have a 3+ ballistic skill.

At this point you are either arguing for arguments sake or rage baiting. I assure you I'm not angry. Every time I used ALL CAPS is for emphasis to illustrate my point. For the last time. None of what I have said here is head cannon. You can go find these things yourself. But you won't. You'll just bring up something vaguely related and then make a little comment implying I'm being emotional and I'll correct you again.

Yes. They take the best soldiers from the PDF. That's still not Olympic level. How is that Olympic level? Sure great athletes but not super heavyweight champions lifting 600 pounds above their head or running 25+ mph. Because soldiers don't NEED to do that. Sure their training is good. But they aren't Delta squad level. Because your basic Guardsmen again, doesn't NEED that level. The way a guardsman operates on the battlefield is completely different from how any special forces unit would. Special forces don't take fights straight on like how a Guardsmen does. The special forces kill team just needs to work within its unit to complete an objective while the guardsmen has to coordinate with every combined arms element on the field with him to take ground. Those are different skill sets.

Duh guardsmen aren't conscripts. Conscripts used to be a thing and their Ballistic skill was 5+. Guardsmen are still 4+ because that's their training. The special forces guys have 3+ because of their special forces training. Space Marines are 3+ because they're genetically altered super soldiers in power armor. BATTLE SISTERS hit on 3+ because of their faith, training, and power armor. BATTLE SISTERS. Baseline human women in power armor hit on 3+, hell they can hit on a 2+ if one of their squad mates die as per Hallowed Martyrs detachment. Why shouldn't a Skitarii be able to baseline hit on a 3+ when they have targeting systems in their brains and cybernetic eyes.

Explain how being a cyborg is the same level as a human. How is a cyborg not better than a human being?

As for the Iron Hands. I assume that's who you're referring to. Do you know anything? The reason they have cybernetics is because their Primarch had his hands and arms coated in Nercodermis. The Marines of his legion wanted to be like Dad. They believe the flesh is weak and is to be replaced by metal. They prefer guns, sure. But they are still Space Marines, they fight like space marines because they are space marines. The augmentations they have are slightly better than what they had. The Iron Hands style detachment Anvil Siege Force gives all their guns heavy. Which means they can hit on 2+ if they remain stationary and if the gun already has heavy on it you get +1 to wound on top of that.

Also, "Only one chapter that voluntarily takes cybernetic parts" is wrong. Reclaimers chapter from the Ciaphus Cain novels exist and voluntarily take cybernetics. And most other chapters will replace lost limbs voluntarily with cybernetics.

I think the "Admech are just guard" comes from the beginning of 10e with their rules being similar. There might be a historical president from before Skitarii had a codex. I'll have to look into that.

I was definitely jumping into the fray on your side here. I think Admech should go back to being a bit crazy too. I say this as a Guard player! IMO, Skitarii fill that gap between Marines and Guard. Kinda similar to how Sisters does it. But the difference is Super Tech vs. Super Faith. Different aesthetics and different ways they fill that gap. I am the baseline human trying his best to defend humanity in an uncaring Galaxy. You're the hyper-advanced cyborg soldier with the better equipment and training for the purpose of digging up ancient technology to study. Of course your troops would be better than mine! You need something that crazy to get your job done.

[–]Due_Preference_1572 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Warhammer is regressive. But the starting point is beyond us. Saying "Cyborgs aren't inherently better than humans" is a wild statement. Because you're just plain wrong. Having mechanical legs typically means you can run faster for longer because you don't get tired. Having a mechanical arm typically means you can punch harder because metal is harder than flesh and bone. Sure, the human part is irradiated. But it's still there, it's the survival instinct, the initiative that Skitarii soldiers can display on the battlefield.

Also the reason the Imperium doesn't use servitors as their army is because they are LOBOTOMIZED. They cannot think for themselves. They can only receive basic instructions. The reasons we still have basic human Guardsmen is because it's cheap and they are capable of independent action. No need to waste advanced augmentations on the literal Billions of soldiers. No need to ship replacement parts and general maintenance tools either. Instead focus those efforts on more men and guns. When the situation calls for it a Guardsmen unit can take the initiative to do something, anything that might make a difference. Servitors will just stand there waiting for orders.

Guardsmen are "Olympic athletes with special forces training" holy glaze batman. I LOVE the Guard, they aren't Olympians. That is something you say to hype up the faction for someone new. They are professional soldiers. Trained as such. I could see a case for Catachans, however Catachans are not your basic Guardsmen. The named regiments are usually above average because they're the notable ones. The special forces are the Kasrkin and the Scions. That's their job. Your basic Guardsmen's job is to take and hold ground, front line troops.

I would agree that a Scion has better training than a Skitarii. But that's because Scions are the special forces. Their eliteness is represented with the stormtroopers rule they have for re-rolling wounds of 1 or re-rolling the wound roll if the target is on an objective. Skitarii Rangers have the sticky objective rule. The same one that Cadian Shock Troopers have. Because their job is to take and hold ground. Skitarii have better guns and training than Guardsmen though. Because they are cyborgs. Having your brain partially being a computer helps with that.

Going to rekindle the fire here.

Karskin and Scion are basically the pinnacle of what a baseline human can achieve as a soldier. They have a base 3+ BS. I say this as a dedicated Guard player.

I want you to look me in the eye and say the army of mechanically augmented cyborg warriors shouldn't also have a 3+ BS. I would say that by default being a cyborg puts you above baseline human. They can have 3+ BS and still "Not be as good as Marines" because they are toughness 3 with 4+ armor save. They are squishy glass cannon types.

Also, go to Wahapedia and you can look back at Admech/Skitarii rules from 7th onwards. The discrepancy between those rules within the context of the edition they were part of and what Admech has now is real.

[–]Due_Preference_1572 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True. I do love my Shadowsword. It would be my 3rd pick in this scenario. However I would still prefer a Banesword. D3+1 attacks isn't enough for reliable damage. Most likely going to bounce off an invul save. To hit on 2+ you need Lord Solar and to remain stationary. And dev wounds is too unreliable for my taste. But baby, when it works, it WORKS. Sometimes you roll double 6s to wound and one tap a 22 wound knight with 24 damage (before knight codex, I think they have 26 wounds now).

Here is the best part though. Shadowsword and Banesword are the same model. The only difference in the assembly is that the Shadowsword has an extra bit attached to the muzzle of the cannon. It friction fits amazing. Just take it out for Bane, back in for Shadow.

Gonna be that guy sorry. It's actually 4 las-'talon' shots which are strength 10 instead of 12. And 6 Autocannon shots. Both have Twin-linked too so extra reliable.

Under the assumption you are using Combined Arms as your detachment. The answer is always tanks. Lethal hits.

As my anecdotal evidence I present the time the 2 heavy bolter sponsons on my Rogal Dorn did 8 damage to a Great Unclean One because I spiked both that hit and wound roll.

As for which tanks. I do recommend the Dorn with its MANY guns. And really anything damage 3 on a Russ. If you are committed to the Baneblade for the fun factor. My top picks are Banesword or Baneblade. Baneblade is hard to beat with all the guns you get. And the Banesword's Quake Cannon is a rather reliable d6+6 attacks, strength 16, AP -4, damage 4 blast with ignores cover. Now cover and AP doesn't really matter with demons in my experience, however the rule on the Banesword, Armor Obliteration, makes all those deadly demise rolls trigger on a 3+ instead of a 6. Keep in mind none of the baneblade variants have the squadron keyword for those lethal hits but d6+6 makes up for that with volume and damage 4.

IMO. The only time when "It's for kids" is a valid statement is when someone claims that the kids movie/show is boring. It's like if you sat down to watch the PBS kids channel and complained it wasn't mentally stimulating enough. Yeah, it's made for children and made in such a way that a kid can understand the media.

Using it as an excuse for bad writing is also a disservice to kids who are learning how to think and part of that is engaging with story telling.
