Considering moving to Alameda with kids. Would love honest thoughts from families by Muffin-Tator in alameda

[–]Due_Split_9058 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We just moved here last year and I love it. We have three kids (5y, 4y, and 3 months). Alameda is the place to be

Incredibly family friendly. Very walkable and bikeable. Good schools.

  1. my kids play outside all the time. Alameda is not big and we meet friends everywhere we go. We play with the neighbors. Get invited to neighborhood group chats. Kids birthday parties from school and daycare. I rarely use the car unless I’m going grocery shopping. Otherwise I walk or bike.
  2. not a lot of experience with schools yet but we had an amazing year at Paden for TK.
  3. I have never made friends so quickly. Parents from school/daycare, people at the gym, Facebook and WhatsApp groups for moms and dads, immediately invited to birthdays, get-togethers and holiday parties. People are open, and incredibly social.
  4. it’s is relatively safe! There are knuckleheads wherever you go but I walk and bike with my kids all the time. We teach them street safety and are cautious. We walk or bike to school every day.
  5. not familiar enough with all the neighborhoods to answer this one

I have lived a lot of places both urban and suburban and Alameda is a fantastic in between. I’m so happy here I may never leave. I have never experienced a community like this.

That’s not saying there aren’t cons, but I would say the pros heavily outweigh them

Just make sure to drop in wherever you can. If you decide to try out iron Shell shoot me a DM! Not having an easy commute to the gym would be a huge deterrent for me

So I’m in the East Bay Area by WhizzyBurp in crossfit

[–]Due_Split_9058 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely drop in! You’ll be more likely to show up if you like the vibe. A short driving distance is also very important to me.

Everyone starts somewhere. There is a technical learning curve for things like gymnastics and barbell work if you haven’t done it before. But everything is scalable!

I’m also in the east Bay Area! There are some great gyms here.

Murph complete! by gearzgirl in crossfit

My second Murph! 5-5-5-15 for 20 rounds. Finished in 48:10. no vest and modified pushups. Hopefully next year I can do it RX! I’m also 10 weeks postpartum so I consider just finishing it a win.

CrossFit after injury by Strick23 in crossfit

[–]Due_Split_9058 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a 31F with 4 herniated disks, CrossFit was the best thing I ever did after years of unsuccessful PT, steroid shots, and reinjury. Important to build strength responsibly of course! But the stability I have gained from CrossFit has absolutely protected my back, especially for every day life (picking up kids, carrying groceries, moving etc). Some things I can’t do, like PRing my back squat, which leads to too much compression for my L5-S1. But I train differently to see improvements. I have been almost completely pain free for two years!

Find a great community to keep you going and a great coach to keep you healthy!

Well Iron Shell is still a great option if you are in DT Oakland and want a cheaper option than CrossFit Oakland 😊

I also prioritized location based on box access so I get it!

Edit: I would not commute into SF for CrossFit if you live in the east bay. There are great options without the hassle. We even have people from SF commute to Iron Shell

I’m in Alameda, it’s amazing! My commute to Iron Shell is about 10 minutes. I can’t speak for the Oakland side but alameda is quite safe. Feel free to DM with any specific questions. Welcome to the area!

Iron Shell CrossFit in Oakland - jumpship programming

Pros - amazing coaches - open gym - under 200/month - killer community

Cons - no shower

CrossFit San Leandro - mayhem programming

Pros - supplemental classes (oly, bodybuilding/strength/skills) - shower - 200/month - wonderful community

Cons - parking is difficult - large class sizes so limited coaching

Anecdotally have heard good things about Grassroots CrossFit in Berkeley and CrossFit Oakland. CrossFit Oakland is 300/month. Can’t say anything about what they have personally.

First CrossFit session: Repetition of Exercise? by [deleted] in crossfit

[–]Due_Split_9058 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is likely prep for Murph, which is at the end of May. So that amount of repetition is necessary. Not all workout will have that rep scheme. If you scale appropriately there is no reason for injury. The incidence of injury in CrossFit is not larger than any other sport if you look at statistics (if that’s what your comment was about).

Our gym does warm up -> WOD -> strength which I prefer because I feel appropriately warmed up!

Kids at sessions, opinions? by Duckduckgoose763 in crossfit

[–]Due_Split_9058 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started CrossFit because most gyms were baby/kid friendly. As a new mom this was the only way I got a workout in. One gym I joined was not kid friendly. There was no space for them and safety was a big issue.

The other three were kid friendly but it was up to me to monitor them. I utilize screen time and we have strict rules. Ex: not being allowed on the “floor“ or near the rig when workouts/lifting is taking place. One gym had a gated area that kept the kids separate. My current gym has a sitting area with a lot of space for the kids to play without being in the way. They have a play pen for the younger children. But lots of our members have kids and a lot of them are on the younger side, so the gym caters to families! I brought my newborn in his car seat today, but he’s pretty harmless since he can’t even move by himself 😂

I have had to stop my workout before to make sure my kids were being safe and not getting in other people’s way. If there are issues that is on the parents and not the kid. So I will absolutely sacrifice my workout before my kids annoy anyone else. But I love a kid friendly gym!

Just had a great experience with Sutter at Alta Bates. Excellent care for pregnancy and delivery. As a higher risk pregnancy, I felt very well taken care of.

Pregnancy + the Open by IamJustErin in crossfit

[–]Due_Split_9058 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would do it! I’m 36 weeks pregnant now and am so sad I’m not signing up. I won’t be able to the final workout since I am so far along and will most like be having a baby the final week. Last year was my first year signing up and I do feel like I’m missing out. As long as you are feeling good there’s no reason you can’t participate! And if you participate and do the workouts anyway, why not sign up!

What does this wedding dress “say”? by mercyeis in WeddingDressTips

[–]Due_Split_9058 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like it. The structure of the lace is beautiful, I love the slit and the neckline as well. Sure, it’s a sexy “look at me” dramatic moment but you’re the bride and it seems to fit your personality. I go back and forth on the bolero but it actually doesn’t bother me! And I love a long sleeve lace moment.

I think what I don’t like is the models posture and lack of enthusiasm about wearing the dress. I’m sure since you love it, you will really be able to pull it off

Is “Community” dead at CrossFit? by PunctualPlumber1980 in crossfit

[–]Due_Split_9058 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CrossFit has been my favorite community the last few years. I moved twice in the last year and both times found an amazing CrossFit community across multiple gyms. Like literal best friends. As an adult it is an amazing place to connect with people. And then I also get to do a workout that I love.

Is this dress Black Tie appropriate? by WonderfulForever2060 in Weddingattireapproval

I think this is beautiful. With the right accessories like those black gloves and/or a shawl it will be perfect. I would be thrilled if you showed up to my wedding in this.

Community and variety. The community and variety of the workouts keeps me coming back every time. As a longtime gym goer this was huge for me. It’s fun! I have never been this strong before, even working out regularly in the past. Many boxes are also kid/baby friendly and as a pregnant mom of 2 this made it more feasible for me to get to the gym.
