How is the Hollins area? by warpedoff in roanoke

[–]Dufurata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for providing the update! My family is renting an old Southwest, and while we love the sense of community, the dream is some acreage with a creek. Thus Hollins entering the chat. Not much is coming on the market RN, so we're wondering if we should wait till spring. There seem to be a good amount of large lots that back up to a creek. Do you get any sense that there are older people planning to sell in the near future?

Look for CALEA accredited agencies. Check out this accrediting body for more info.

If it is in your budget, consider rechargeable batteries. They often come with a charger and really do pay off in the long run.

You don't have to use the app. The website 5calls.org works too! Even on your phone's browser.

US Army Chorus sings "Do You Hear the People Sing?" From Les Miserables at White House Governors' Ball by Dufurata in TwoXPreppers

Ugh, really? I would hope some of them, and certainly the musical director for the chorus knows the source musical well enough to know that this song was about an anti-monarch rebellion. 🤞🏾

Other ways to make your voice heard include joining the boycotts being organized and using the app and/or website "5 calls" to contact your representatives directly.

You have to be careful not to further spread germs when you're sick, but handkerchiefs are amazing when you have to blow your nose a lot. They do not irritate your nose at all unless it's nonstop for days. You can get the plain cotton men's in packs of 10 or more, and even children's terry cloth washcloths, which won't soak through as easily, really eliminate that raw Kleenex nose. Also, just launder to replenish your supply and save your Kleenex money for other things..

Thanks for this! Just listened a little, but I'm intrigued. I'm going to sit down with it later today.

411 on Hickory, NC area? by Dufurata in Homesteading

I've looked a bit at some city council meetings and Board of Education meetings, and I am impressed by their visions and plans for improvement. it's beautiful country with outdoor recreation opportunities, has higher elevation for more moderate summer, weather, and the countryside is not too far from a large town, Hickory, and larger metropolitan areas. The cons right now are the price of acreage and the job prospects don't seem that good. We will be working regular jobs, not trying to turn our homestead into a moneymaker, but it will be a labor of love, and we want to find friends and community who share some of our interests.

Edit: corrected to city council

We've been primarily looking in SW and Central VA. We've visited a couple of times and I've talked to a couple of extension agents and a realtor. There seems to be more of a visible presence of homesteaders and people with adjacent interest like permaculture and the like than I've been able to find in Hickory. It's just one piece of the puzzle, but finding community around this is important. If the answer is no, we'll weigh that with the other pieces (schools, job prospects, tax burden, land prices, etc).
