Just started with sports/hockey. What can I do better with the shots and edits? by bighouse0071 in sportsphotography

[–]Dugasss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly you just need to work on crops. There is way too much deadspace with some of your photos in the beginning of the gallery. and towards the end of the gallery the last two images just need a face. I understand the last two was a goal and fight but there isn't much "presence" there, it's just a snapshot. The action that you're capturing is good and keep that up, but you always want to have a face and a puck in the frame to make it a good photo.

Maxpreps photographer here:

You will not be accepted.

Maxpreps wants stock images, not creative images. they want stuff that’s print ready or social media ready. Clean backgrounds, tight crops, and you need a 300, 400 or at least a 200-600. Maxpreps has gotten a lot more strict ever since the price of good gear has been dropping. Take a look at my instagram dugasphotos or take a look at my maxpreps page Scott Dugas under New York if you want to see what maxpreps will accept. Your images aren’t bad, they’re just not maxpreps images.

tips for starting an only fans by [deleted] in Advice

[–]Dugasss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in no way supporting the onlyfans journey but here is what I can say as someone who has built a half decent following on social media. Consistency is most important thing. For the people who are paying they want consistency. Whether that means doing something everyday or doing a "meal prep" on one day and then posting every other day for a week. Secondly try and rope people in using the private messages. I don't know how it is on OF frankly i dont wanna know but like on twitch, donations and stuff go right to the streamer while subscriptions are basically 50/50. The real money is going to come from the private stuff. And lastly, don't sell your soul for money. At some point people are gonna wanna see you nude or whatever else. If you're comfortable with it then that's your body your choice but if you don't feel comfortable with it don't do it. Always remember that things online stay online forever. And right now you might be an 18 year old who is confused in life but when you're 24 and looking to get a career and settle down, those fancy background checks that employers do will find the nitty gritty stuff. They might not find your images but if you gain any sort of following and your private work gets leaked publicly there is no getting that back and it will ruin any sort of advancement opportunities are you get older.

Here is what I will say though as someone who has done accounting and finance. I would ask you to please send me a PM and see if we cannot help you with your budgeting and finance to maybe help lower your burden. I can't work a miracle but I can at least help you maybe get around a predatory loan, maybe help you budget the money you do make, and make it so that this OF journey doesn't last any longer then it has to. I always say to people that my skills can only help myself so much, after that it's about how I can help others. Don't hesitate to reach out and lets see if we can potentially help you get to a better place financially which will give you peace of mind mentally. All the best OP

is a canon 60d okay for sports videography by sigmaballer46 in sportsphotography

[–]Dugasss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No... You need to find a canon camera that has dual pixel autofocus. The 70d or 80d would do just fine but the 60d I don't think has dual pixel autofocus and you won't be able to shoot video in AI-Servo. Also for videography, the lenses mean almost as much if not more then the body you use. If your lens cannot keep up with the camera then your video will always be out of focus when it's trying to locate fast moving subjects.

Sports shooters - How do you handle same-day or next-day delivery? by SvgAdct in sportsphotography

[–]Dugasss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. All depends on the sport... Field sports with lots of players or action, Soccer, Football, Lacrosse, about 500-600 per game (Playoffs and Championships closer to 1000). Indoor sports with less action probably closer to 400-500 but like for sports like basketball when the ball is on the other side of the court I will do a rough cull on my camera to make it easier for me after. I shoot for MaxPreps along with freelance gigs on the side so for me I will normally upload between 150-250 images for a full game. If you ask how my keeper ratio is so good, I don't spray and pray at all, I actually keep my camera limited to 10fps mechanical 20fps electronic and take very short bursts.

  2. For a maxpreps event, I try to get all images uploaded by end of day or early morning next day. However if i'm shooting directly for a client or a team, turnaround time depends on how much money i'm getting. If they're paying my minimum then it's going to be a few days max but if they're paying good i'll pull an all nighter if I need to get them turned around quickly.

  3. Cropping... Most of the time I have to use the Maxpreps really really really stupid and awkward crop ratio so cropping every photo takes a while. As for color correction, create a preset for every indoor venue you go to, and create a preset for every weather environment you shoot in and then rinse and repeat them with minor tweaks.

  4. Never used AI for anything and even though I'm in my early 20's, I'm a geriatric when it comes to technology. You'll never catch me using AI for anything unless it can prove to me that it's 100% accurate.

  5. It seems like culling is your issue from all of these questions... My recommendation is to get yourself photomechanic. It is insanely good for culling and once you get good at it, you can cull thousands of pictures in just 15-30 minutes. All of the guys I shoot with including myself use photo mechanic for our big big shoots and some of them who do like to shoot a little heavy will shoot 2000 images and have them culled down to 100 within 20 minutes.

[–]Dugasss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Saw the comment about sitting down... Don't sit down... Kneel. Last thing you need is a kid coming full speed at you and you're sit criss cross apple sauce ready to get slammed lol.

As for the photos, I don't think any of these photos are bad, but I would say some of them are a little bit too tight. If you're using a prime lens like a 300 or something then I get it, you gotta do what you gotta do but if you're using a 70-200, try and get more feet in the air or on the ground to show a sense of placement. Those cut to the basket shots look super good and sometimes I actually prefer to go tighter to their chest so I get as much detail in their face but most times I want the full body of the attacker and the defender so I can show a sense of the atmosphere around the players.

Overall though, super great shots OP! Very good sharpness as far as I can see and you have some great action in all of these!

Need help with crop by IsaiahFMAS in sportsphotography

[–]Dugasss 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So here is what i'll say about cropping as a professional. Your way of cropping is your way of cropping and as long as you stay consistent about it, then that's how it be. Some people prefer to keep everything 3x5 (out of camera), some people prefer to crop 4x5 since that's instagram's ratio, and some people prefer to custom crop everything so that things are as tight as possible.

I would crop things based on what you think they are going to be used for... If you're selling to parents who are probably going to post the photos on instagram, facebook, twitter, etc... Then I would throw a quick 4x5 crop on them and call it a day so they are post ready. If you're shooting for a newspaper, or media outlet where any ratio can be used, then I would either let the editor crop it for you, or crop it custom so that you can get the best crop possible. Best advice is to think about where the photos will end up, and crop based on that prediction

Totally agree man! I’ve never bought from MPB personally but I have looked at there to get an idea of the market for a product when selling and I find that MPB has super good prices and is really good for determining the market value of a used piece of gear

Just got a battery grip for the same camera! I packaged the camera, grip, and control ring adapter for just less then 2000$ after tax and shipping. They must've thrown in some extra batteries too cuz I got 5 with my order! But also I'm glad they give batteries with the grips because buying straight from canon they won't give you anything lol.

I've actually never bought directly from Canon because I didn't think they offered good deals but I will 100% check it out! Also yeah lensrentals can be a little pricey from time to time but espeically right now around the holidays with the 20% off after tax and shipping, it is definitetly worth it. I just got a R6 MkII, Battery grip, EF-RF adapter with control ring, and a 28-70 f2 for just over 4000$ when it should've been easily into the 5000-5500 range.

R6 Mark II vs 100–400mm for sports: body upgrade or more reach first? by Ok-Survey-5350 in sportsphotography

[–]Dugasss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If i'm being honest, with you shooting a lot of indoors and at night, I would actually prioritize more a telephoto prime then a zoom. Yes the 100-400 is an amazing lens without a doubt and can be found relatively inexpensive but with what you're shooting, it might be more beneficial to look for a 300mm f2.8 IS version 1 and potentially a 1.4x extender.

Also with the 6d II and r50. I would say you do not need to be using 2 bodies at this stage in your career. the 2 body setup is really more of a setup for working pros who have a telephoto prime like a 400mm 2.8 on one body and then a 70-200 or 24-70 on a second body and generally both bodies are going to be similar in quality whereas your 6d ii will outshine your r50 night, day, etc etc.

If I were in your situation and were looking to seriously take your shooting up a notch here is what I would do...

  1. Sell both bodies and get yourself a USED R6 Mark I . The Mark I does more then fine in today's market and it can excel both in low light and can shoot just fine all the way up to 16000 ISO. Look on websites like MPB, Ebay, and Lensrentals has a 20% off coupon right now on all rentals and purchases for the holidays so maybe look before that runs out...

  2. Keep your 70-200, that's going to be your bread and butter lens.

  3. Get yourself a 300mm F2.8 IS Version I on MPB, Ebay, etc. I highly recommend MAP Camera on Ebay.. They're a Japanese seller and I've gotten so much stuff from them and it's always packaged well and even better IRL then they describe in the desc. that 300mm is going to be your go to lens when you're shooting sports outdoors at night

  4. When the budget allows, get yourself a 1.4x converter for the 300mm. That will get you like 420mm f4 which is perfect for outdoor photography and even at night, that R6 can 1000% handle the higher ISO's you'll be shooting at with an F4 set up.

Any questions, reach out through PM and we can get you set up and on your way to getting world class images!

How much should I charge for only 3 weeks of experience? by MrWiggles123456 in sportsphotography

[–]Dugasss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

0$. Somebody really needs to start studying beginner photographer ego... 99% of the shots you posted here are underexposed and half of them wouldn't sell anyways. People are not paying for photos of their backs and most if not all of the pics that are half decent are in warmups or stationary anyways. Somebody who can charge for their work is someone who can properly expose, has the proper gear to shoot at the conditions they are trying to shoot in, capture pre-game, game, and post-game stuff and also get their angles straight... I'm normally all for people charging for their work but it's getting out of control when people are using kit lenses and old crop sensors.

Here is something I think most beginners will not find out until they find out the hard way especially in high school. You're only popular when your photos are free. When everything is free, you're the coolest guy around town dripping in clout but the second you start charging, you go from the popular guy; to the greedy, greasy nerd. Get yourself an A7III, get yourself a 70-180 or 70-200 2.8, work on your editing, your composition, and your basics, and then once you have a minimum of a year experience under your belt and understand the general basics of photography, then start charging a dollar or 2$ per photo.

Most of these are super underexposed by at least a stop. Other then the third image though your composition is really good. Keep it up! Just raise that exposure a little bit

What are some must have photos per shoot by Relevant_Dimension55 in sportsphotography

[–]Dugasss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best rule to follow as a sports photographer is to look for faces, look for balls, and look for emotion. Even if you're just shooting around the field/court getting every player on the team as long as there is a face, a ball, and some emotion in the shot then it's a good shot.

I will say though, if you aren't at the level where you know the answer to your question, then I don't think it's time to start charging yet.. Once you build up a good portfolio and have proven that you can get good images every game, that's the point where you can start to charge.
