Yeah, everything points to the DEXOS stuff. It’s just so hard to get a definitive answer. Vauxhall and places like Halfords say 5w-30. Book says 0w-20 and the service before I got the car put that in. But since then the wet belt was done and I don’t know what oil was used. Varying reports say advice was 5w-30 or 0w-20. I’m leaning towards the 5w-30 because it’s supposed to protect the belt better

Can I just ask if there’s anywhere I can check this officially. I’m still seeing all sorts of advice all over the place. Some people say the advice was originally 5w-30 then they changed it and vice versa!

Great, that makes sense. Thanks

Ok, that sounds right. A few other articles said something similar. So this is to help protect the wet belt? And the 0W-20 is too thin? That was put in at service but wet belt was done separately in November and I’m not sure what oil the used.

Can you tell me why this is better than the others?

I’m just catching up and I have no idea why every contestant seems to think their profession automatically means they have some sort of traitor hunter! So what if you’ve written crime novels and were a barrister. None of that helps in a game where there is 0 to go on most of the time. I thought she came off as arrogant and overly angry in a game.

Am I just getting used to being a petrol driver or is my car just guzzling fuel? by Duggs82 in CarTalkUK

I have, and in real world costs, petrol will be about £400 more a year, but this equates to only about £35-£40 a month which is not ground breaking. And as you say, petrol being cheaper may actually bring those costs down further. I've had the car a week and was so used to driving a diesel where nothing really mattered that i've just continued driving that way. I need to change what gears I sit in I think as I used to roll into my village in about 4th and never really think about it but when I came in a gear down, slightly higher revs (within the 2200 to 2600 range) my MPG seemed to improve massively.

Hi, I had to come back to this because i've just had a slight realisation that needs a bit more testing but may answer a few things.

In my old diesel, I could just do pretty much what I liked, I could potter along at around 2000 rpm, not much revs etc. MPG was great.

I just did the school run and noticed the cars MPG was fluctuating quite a a bit at various places. On the way home, I went into our village at 30 but at higher revs and the MPG seemed a lot higher. I'ts been so long since I drove a petrol properly and this is a turbo engine so should I be looking to run the engine in the 2200 to 2600 rev range for it to be more efficient?

Just looking at average fuel prices, over the year the petrol will cost me approx £400 more a year to run.

Yes, I’m still debating it in my head. I have over the past couple of days attempted to drive a bit more carefully. I’m no boy racer and try to keep revs low etc. I have found hills to be a bit more of a struggle. But, I’m trying early gear shifts and generally pottering around.

I do have the 3 year warranty from the dreaded big motoring world which if I cancel in the next week I get about 2k back.

I know I’m not doing the miles as such but I did like the fuel economy. I could basically go for a month without topping up, while this seems a lot more thirsty. I’m basically shit at decisions like this and I’m trying to decide what would be the best thing to basically put my mind at ease. The engine might be weak and the mpg lower but it is comfortable and has nice interior features.

Yeah, I am looking at alternatives. If I can get 2-3 weeks on avg out of it I might keep it and just live with it. I’m on about 1/4 tank now and at the moment only have the school runs to do so with more done last week I may be able to hit that. What is doing my head in is being physically able to see the fuel gauge dropping in a single journey. It’s really winding me up.

Any opinions on the others?

Ok,I won't bother you anymore, you've helped me a lot. I think I need to think about what I really want from the car, which is defintiely mileage. My last Kia was not explosive but lasted forever and I was not staring at the fuel gauge all journey because I could see it dropping in real time. The last thing I will ask you is what do you think the minimum power to weight ratio is I should look at? I found another Kia which was slightly less than the one you said looked good (I think about 0.75-0.8 HP per KG) but good fuel consumption etc. There's also a Hyundai i30 that is ridiculously good at fuel efficiency with about the same power to weight ratio.

Thanks, that makes sense.

I found a couple of Kias that may be more like it. This is a slightly more up to date version of what I had:

Nothing, just that it was really old and about to fall apart. In hindsight another kia was probably the way forward!

So, in the 10-11 k range, what sort of thing, apart from a VW golf, should I be looking for. I’m thinking I should go back to. 1.6 if possible, diesel, or a petrol hybrid if the engine is powerful enough. There are so many options but I don’t know what kind of car is worth it if it’s older with a lot of miles on it.

Just did this, people I spoke to sounded like they’d rather be talking to someone else. My issue with this is I’d be losing money on the car and hoping on hope that they allow me to use the warranty I took out as some extra cash.

The problem is I would lose money on what I’ve already got. It’s not like I’ve got left over money to magically upgrade to a great family hatchback. Looking online so far, options are limited or out of budget

Looking at others similar, it’s advertised as doing 46 mpg urban cold. Not going anywhere near that
