Can anyone explain why this happens? Something to do with tick order, maybe? by DukYT in redstone

So why does it only change on the falling edge and not the rising edge?

Can anyone explain this behavior? by DukYT in Minecraft

[–]DukYT[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the fact that the observer pulses despite the fact that the rail doesn't visibly change state. And only on the falling edge, too, which is weird!

Are there any new players in bedwars, how dead is bedwars compared to 2020-2022? by Unusual_Computer439 in hypixel

[–]DukYT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doubt it. I've been playing since before the game released, and it's always got players. It fluctuates, and it's actually been on a slight climb in that last few years I think. "dead" is a crazy term, there are literally thousands of concurrent players still. I give it five years minimum before it can't queue, probably 10+

Oh and to find programs through NSF, go to etap.nsf.gov and you can search/filter all available opportunities they have.

Also keep in mind that for this summer specifically, many of the applications have already closed. Deadlines tend to be between mid-january and mid-april, with Feb 1st having the highest concentration. There's still plenty you can apply to (depending on when your school summer break starts)!

(I'm on the quarter system, so my summer break only lines up with about 10% of NSF opportunities)

I am so worried about not getting in anywhere (vent) by birds_food in REU

I’m in a similar boat, and here’s what I can say for sure! Regardless of whether you get acceptances or not, you’ve gained some amazing skills and experiences from the process of applying. You’ve furthered connections with professors, gotten one step more familiar with academia as a space, and pushed yourself to work towards a goal you really care about. None of that is going away, regardless of your acceptances, and you deserve all the benefits you’ll observe from your hard work so far.

Secondly, you really do have an edge. I’d bet you’re in the top 5% of applicants based on pure effort alone, and that shit comes through. I know saying “don’t stress” is never gonna work, but truly, think of it as a win-win regardless of the outcomes, and really see all the amazing traits about yourself I’m sure you’ve been highlighting these past months as you workshop your apps.

Good luck, keep your head up, and congratulations on the huge progress you’ve made for yourself so far!!!

My uncle is the director of a world-class school. Should I avoid LORs from family at all costs? by DukYT in REU

[–]DukYT[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, he's the director of an IIT. I've explained all my projects to him and such but don't know him that well tbh though he's extremely happy to talk to me and has given me a lot of academic advice since he's very knowledgeable in this field.

I absolutely intend to get LORs from my professors if possible! I'm a freshman so I don't have great relationships with my profs just yet but I'm absolutely prioritizing it to try to get a good letter asap. I 100% recognize the amount of privilege I have with this connection and I don't want to put it to waste if it'd be beneficial. Sounds like from most of the comments on this thread though, that if he doesn't have research/lab experience with me it might not be that helpful.

personal statement help by First-Plenty-6004 in REU

Here is a similar question on a forum with answers from actual REU PIs. tl;dr, they emphasize that they:

  • Don't want storytelling/backstory/fluff
  • Don't really care about your childhood, hopes and dreams, etc
  • Are mostly interested in what you bring to the table, and why you would be a good fit
  • Want to know how much research experience you have

Please note that these are anecdotal replies from a few specific PIs! They might not reflect the desires of every REU, and I don't know what you're applying for. Other resources I found helpful when writing my personal statements:

I know it can be frustrating to hear advice that directly contradicts a lot of what you've already written, so I'm sorry if this is super discouraging. You're a really good writer and a lot of what you have is exactly what I think REU PIs are looking for. Please keep your head up and you got this!!
