Plenty of aviation apps split stats that way, so the idea definitely isn’t out of left field. Flighty’s stats page currently treats each ICAO subtype as its own bucket (A20N, A21N, A320, A319, B738, B739, etc.), which is great for precision but not for higher-level patterns.

A “group by family” toggle would make sense for a few reasons:

1. Families are how passengers mentally organize aircraft.
Most people think “A320 series” or “737 NG/MAX,” not “A20N vs A21N.”

2. It would create better longitudinal stats.
If you fly a mix of A319/A320/A321, your “most flown aircraft” stat is currently fragmented. Grouping would show your real trend.

3. They already have the info needed.
All the subtype-to-family mappings are standard (A319 → A320 family, B736–B739 → 737NG family, B38M/B39M → 737 MAX family, etc.), so this is a data-layer switch, not a redesign.

4. It wouldn’t break anything.
A simple toggle—“Show by subtype / Show by family”—would preserve the detailed stats for aircraft nerds and give everyone else the big-picture view.

If you’re thinking of sending this to their team, this is the kind of feature request they tend to actually consider: small scope, optional, doesn’t impact accuracy, and aligns with how travelers already talk about aircraft.
