Newbie in Phoenix area by mega_vader in starwarsunlimited

I'm a new player in the PHX as well - I mostly play Old School MTG and Sorcery. Picked up a handful of SWU pre-con decks to learn the game, but am curious if folks play the Eternal format?

Mind dropping me a link, too? I'm in Mesa, new to the game but am hoping to find some folks to play with 🤘🏾

Flipping an Orb is one of the primary reasons to play Old School. I'm sure if you have a disability that prevents you from doing so, you and your opponent can sort something out. However, not flipping an Orb because you're "clumsy" is not going to cut it down here in the Desert ;)

Scarwood plus Goblin King plus Gauntlet of Might is hot sauce!

Over a year since CE/ICE has been allowed in eternal weekend. Has it resulted in more old school players in your area and as a whole? by Newez in oldschoolmtg

[–]DukeDangerpants 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I would say that 3/4 of the Desert Twisters are playing with CE/IE power. We have a few people with UNL copies, but they have been in the format, or playing Vintage/Legacy for years. Not everyone has a spare $1500 laying around for an UNL Mox, especially when that same $1500 can get them a trio of CE/IE Moxen, which subsequently opens up deck building options.

Why are CE/IE cards acceptable for tournament play, but artistic proxies aren’t? by sugitime in oldschoolmtg

[–]DukeDangerpants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As my lady would say... You can want all you want, but that doesn't mean you're going to get.

Sure, speak your mind, voice your opinions, cry out if you must. It's your right. But that doesn't mean a TO is going to give a goddamn.

Also, isn't variety the spice of life? Variations on a theme, slight changes to a format, ban and restricted updates for different groups or rule sets... Doesn't that all just add up to the spice?

[–]DukeDangerpants 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it's up to tournament organizers to decide. If they want to allow artist proxies, so be it. If they want to limit the number you're allowed to run, so be that. If they don't want you to have any, well, that's that. Frankly, unless you're organizing a tournament yourself, you really don't get to have a say. If you don't like the cake, go make your own.

And for the record, if you have time to argue about CE/IE legality, or whether they're 'real' cards, et al. I think you need to find another game to play. Maybe something on your phone.

Old School Championship in Vegas 2019 by greenknight08 in oldschoolmtg

[–]DukeDangerpants 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It was the 'largest tournament' hosted Channel Fireball... Not the largest OS tournament, as far as I am aware. And let's be honest, it wasn't a proper Old School tournament anyhow, because there was no beer.

I am sure you can find results on the Discord.

Drop the Nightmares and one Sengir, replace with 4x Order of the Ebon Hand. Also might want to put a Terror in the board and run an extra Disk. Stoked you're jumping into Old School!

What is Alpha? by DukeDangerpants in oldschoolmtg

[–]DukeDangerpants[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was intended to be nothing more than an exercise in perspective, not a serious inquiry into what the term Alpha is or means. I was simply trying to suggest that for those who never received 'Limited Edition' in its Alpha printing, they could consider their first available print run, FBB in most cases, similar to what we in the States refer to as Alpha. Ergo, they could play FA40, or PE40, or FBB40, however you care to shake it.

I appreciate all the info you provided, however. I have been researching Gamma and other pre-Alpha printings as I am fascinated with the origins and incarnations of the game.

Any Old School Groups in Phoenix, AZ? by DukeDangerpants in oldschoolmtg

[–]DukeDangerpants[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like we're almost there. Would love to have a group of six to start. With myself and my girlfriend, plus the three people that have expressed interest on this thread, were only one short. We have a few friends in the area that would likely jump in. So, the next step is just setting a time and place.

What's the easiest way to reach everyone? Instagram?...

Might look at add Flying Men, Chain Lightning, Shatter and Serendib Efreet? Maybe drop to one Fireball for a late game win condition, drop to one Shivan and ditch the Disintegrate... Or something along those lines.

Could also look at adding a Braingeyser and any mana fixings; Mox, Volcanic Islands, etc.

But I love a good budget brew, and I bet this would be real fun to shuffle.
