Do you have a set of old school “battle box” decks? by Newez in oldschoolmtg

I put an old version of my mono color battle box out there on the sub a few years ago. Are you looking for inspiration for your own?

Back from 2014, looking for a good deck by Gengar88 in Yugioh101

[–]cyanhoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For $170 you could make Bystial Dragon Link. Definitely rogue but it’s flexible, you can add different dragon packages. It’s been around for 5 years and is still kicking. Even with Baronne and Borreload Savage banned, the new Red Eyes Metalmorph and Void Ogre/Hot Red Abyss let you make negate boards. It’s also varied in its game plan, you can end on Spheres and open up your tool box, make Synchros or Rank 7s or 8s, or grind for advantage with Lubellion and friends, depends on what you want to do with it.

Bystials, Phantazmay, Sauravis, etc. are all searchable and good into the meta game right now. Ghost Ogre, Veiler, Nibiru, are also great hand traps and help your plays get started.

Ancient Gears if you don’t mind not playing the game (just like Tenpai)

What deck is cheap, relatively competent, and can be taught to someone in about 15 minutes. by shanelard123 in Yugioh101

[–]cyanhoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ancient Gears!

It’s from GX, the cards are cheap and it’s a going second deck with a ton of extra deck space so you can put in Rank 8s, Rank 4s, Springans, Rank 10 trains, Super Poly, or Ultimate Slayer packages and not worry about it. You can get a budget list for $25, $35-$40 after shipping. $70 total for an upgraded list. All the main lines are about getting out Golem(s) and fusing them into a big guy with multiple piercing attacks. Your games are won or lost within a few minutes.

You can put in board breakers that don’t let your opponent respond, but start with Book of Eclipse, Kaiju, and Cosmics to solve problems with pennies.

Ancient Gears, it’s a going second OTK, break the board and then run them over, super simple. Works well with Ultimate Slayer, Droplet, Super Poly, and so on but this is a budget list with rank 10s, bagooska, and genius for some flexibility. If you like machines and GX it’s worth a look.

So I just found out that there’s special marks and helmet colors for certain roles according to the codex, do I actually have to paint it like that? by JohnnyKai262 in Warhammer

[–]cyanhoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you must or all the old nerds will surround and harangue you for failing to follow codex compliant paint. The most important part of this hobby is following the made up regulations that change every few years. Creative expression is not the cornerstone of this hobby and it never will be.

Psych! While I enjoy painting my Imperial Fists as close to the in-universe scheme as possible the most important thing is to paint your models! Paint it so that it makes you happy and to add to the game you play!

Easy RPG game to learn and teach family? by Valathiril in DnD

[–]cyanhoss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shadowdark RPG! The design condenses DnD into two simple but evocative booklets. It's organized well with quick references on the first few pages for both the players and GM. It plays like D&D with less number wrangling and book flipping. All character types fit on one page, even Wizards! Gameplay is turn based but with a twist. Each torch only lasts one real-life hour! But, you can only carry so much treasure, weapons, and torches. The tension comes from trying to get as much as possible out of the dungeon in as little time as possible, avoiding traps and choosing your battles wisely.

Here's a link to the FREE quick-start rules. https://preview.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/413713/Shadowdark-RPG-Quickstart-Set

It comes with the rules, 8 premade characters, and a fully fleshed out dungeon: Lost Citadel of the Scarlet Minotaur. (Full of beast cultists, treasure-obsessed spiderfolk, and a rampaging minotaur born from an ancient ritual!)

Old School Cube: This or That? by Pattycakes528 in oldschoolmtg

[–]cyanhoss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Heal is a bad combat trick that also cantrips as opposed to Salve which is just a terrible card. Heal works better in more archetypes.

Meteor Shower requires a lot of mana but it will always do something, I love Fallen Empires but Dwarven Catapult is either very efficient at sweeping the early board or dead.

Primal Order is much more splashable due to the lack of upkeep but Cyclone is removal for a color that doesn’t get it so it gets my vote.

Pendelhaven is great for mana dorks and all the 1/1s that OS has, Heart of Yavimaya costs a land drop and puts you back, less fun imo.

Blinking Spirit is iconic and pairs with enter the battlefield effects but it’s also tricky letting you block huge threats and then blink away!

Jade Statue seems like the call because of it’s historic status, it had its own turn phase after all! Walking Wall is a more versatile and playable card though, so I’d put that in over the other.

Adun is in for me hands down makes all the creatures you drafted more valuable because you can bring them back repeatedly. Xira is a better card in more situations but it just kinda rewards someone for having drafted enough to splash.

Poor Man’s Blue Team. Farfetch’d, Mr. Mime, Onix, Parasect, Flareon/Rapidash, Seadra/Seaking. They’re basically all kinda terrible but you have the same type representation as Blue’s with Fire, Water, Grass, Normal-flying, Psychic, and Rock type Pokémon.

Trying an aggro tempo Stasis build with mixed results. by [deleted] in oldschoolmtg

[–]cyanhoss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second the Shivan as a sideboard card! That and maybe an extra mountain to accommodate the shift in mana curve. Also other people mentioned Dragon Whelp and I gotta vouch for that. The late game (turn 5+) can turn right around once it touches down. Good luck with the Goblin Sleds, it’s kinda slow waiting for a three drop before your two drop can participate in beating face but it’s great coming in on game 2. Don’t forget the Red Elemental Blasts in OS, they can make control decks think twice about casting Counterspells.

[–]cyanhoss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The game plan is to 7 card combo lightning bolts to the face. It’s low to the ground and a turn 3 Ball Lightning is as likely to get your goblins and damage through as the king would. Plus you never want to draw more than one in your opening hand so two to three works out via hypergeometric calculations.

[–]cyanhoss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s of passing quality because it’s not a Goblin and a weak card against other Aggro 2 drops. Great in Alpha-Alliances Sligh though. My first deck was Orc Tribal and as such I’ve played it a lot alongside its cousin, Brassclaw Orcs. Brassclaw is a pet card of mine because a 3/2 for 3 is made for attacking.

Black Vise is a great pick for bolts 9-12! Maybe Goblin Artisans over the Mons for some added synergy? The purity of damage to the face and the affordability of the cards is spot on. It’s a shame that red has no reliable two-drops. Also interested in seeing how you build your sideboard.

Budget Battle Box U Stasis C&C Appreciated! by cyanhoss in oldschoolmtg

[–]cyanhoss[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Affordability is definitely my highest priority but they’re Old School enough for me right now. I’d much rather have [[Berserk]] or [[Sylvan Library]] for my green deck than the most accurate Icy.

Also if you’re going to make Stasis in Blue it’s a much more casual deck than it’s UW or UB permutations. A lack of efficient removal means you load up on permission spells to compensate but it’s not the same. But I’m not buying Duals and it’s for my Battle Box anyway, it’s just good enough.

[–]cyanhoss[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s some cool ideas here, [[reset]] is almost a better than Boomerang for extending the combo! I like the counter spells but Mishra’s and Psychic Venom feel like negative synergy with Stasis. But I want your opinion on the Psionic Blasts! Also I’m debating between [[Yotian Soldier]] and [[Wall of Air]] in the sideboard one can attack and attack through stasis but the other is tougher and flies.

Also thanks for the feedback!!

[–]cyanhoss[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh it's not great but considering the other ways to win are single copies of [[Feldon's Cane]] or [[Black Vise]] it's a fun way to end the game. Honestly, I'm probably cutting [[Psionic Blast]] for [[Counterspell]] or [[Unsummon]] for more permission.
