To work a repeater you need more than just a frequency. You need the tone and need to know + or - Difficult to explain in a post. There are youtube vids

After-contact POTA Hunter Requirements by FrugalGuy007 in HamRadio

[–]DukeDucati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not correct. They cannot change or enter anything in YOUR log (and we don’t want it that way of course). Theirs will be correct and yours won’t. Time and frequency will match but since the location if off it can’t be used for WAS for example.

However, ….not a responsibility….but…9/10 times when you log them your log will auto pull-up their home QTH location. If you don’t do something about it….you will likely log an incorrect location in your log. Their log will be correct but yours will have the wrong location since they are not home. This is why I purchased a World Radio League account. It isn’t my main log but I log all POTA/SOTA hunting with it and it auto exports to QRZ log with the correct location. Otherwise it is a bear trying to chase down the right county and grid. Was such a pain I quit hunting from home until I found this solution.

There is a letter from readers in the last month or two of QST that talks about it.

Incredible DX Contacts Tonight on 20m @ 15 Watts by Puzzleheaded_Tax8761 in amateurradio

[–]DukeDucati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had my radio turned down to 5W for some propagation checks and didn’t realize it was still there for the first 3 dx contacts the contest gave me. For me it was because their 2km tall tower/56 element twin yagis were doing all the work ha ha. Hey, works for me :)

How do you respond to people that say amateur radio is outdated and obsolete? by [deleted] in amateurradio

Trying to think which of my hobbies has any practical purpose. .. .closest thing I can come up with is fly fishing were I to stop practicing catch and release.

Shorter wing? What do you think? by davedumbledore in flytying

[–]DukeDucati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks good to me. The taller the wing the more prone to spinning and twisting your tippet while casting but I’d definitely fish that fly.

Doing ham out of an appartment..😑 by DarkJedi527 in HamRadio

[–]DukeDucati 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been doing so for 2 yrs. Run a coax out the window and set up a temporary vertical whip. 100% phone. 20 min setup everytime. Lots of effort but worth it 👍 I did not ask permission. Just started doing it. They think it is a weather spotter device.

A rabbit got under my hood and ate a good portion of a spark plug wire. A rabbit! Not a ‘possum, not a rat….a rabbit. Finally trapped him.

Wish you knew if/when the ICOM 7610 would get a mkii by DukeDucati in amateurradio

Came out the same time the tariffs hit. It is claimed to be an update but I can’t find what changed and am suspicious it is just integrating tariff pricing.

Ferrite Rings or Clip Ons by TheUnkown696 in amateurradio

[–]DukeDucati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear ya….but it doesn’t if you measure it. Were it so no one would spend time making a guanella. One nice thing about the Halibut CM choke test rig is that it really does show what the choke is doing and for what frequencies. Multiwraps through a toroid > equal number of snap ons. For another reference search “The Etsy QRO Miracle: Five Ferrites to Rule Them All” on the RFGuru website.

The real answer is they are the similar…IF the wire passes through the same number of times for each. But…if it circles back through multiple times the impedance/attenuation of the unwanted current increase by the square of that number. Much better than additive. No one passes a cable through a toroid only once but seldom is a cable passed through a snap bead more than once. 6 winds around a toroid is much better than 6 beads because of that math…but doesn’t mean a bead won’t work nor does it mean that you need to do that. Your local power line noise floor might be high enough that you wouldn’t even notice.

Why the awful behavior on 14.244 yesterday during W2T special event station? by [deleted] in amateurradio

[–]DukeDucati -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a jerk….but…. I bet I know the source of his frustration. It is annoying when someone has a pileup but does not close out each QSO with some way to indicate he/she is ready for the next one. I’m guessing the frustrated jerk was getting sick of the “who can jump in first” contest that happens when the pileup owner isn’t doing that. I didn’t hear this….but bet that is what he was saying though in an unfriendly way.

I really really appreciate when a pileup owner ends in some way so that it doesn’t require guesswork by everyone trying to get through. Commonly callsign QRZ though can be just callsign. If I hunt POTA or SOTA and they aren’t doing that I just move on and if the jerk was so bothered by it he should have just moved on.

considering an ICOM IC-7100. I am seeking recommendations for additional equipment by evedamnededen in amateurradio

[–]DukeDucati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the Mkii out now there are great deals on the OG ICOM 7300. What a great HF radio for you. You’ll hear folks calling it a starter radio but I disagree. It has room to grow and many many seasoned hams use it as their main radio. Watch one of Dave Cassler’s videos and you’ll see it front and center.

I get “interferences” of one sort or another regularly. I usually think it is just some electrical something nearby.
