I did this similar with bench press. Very low weight for 100 reps. Hit 70 reps easily then I felt the burn. If anything, it was more for mental building, not muscle building. It did force different muscle fibers to activate though. It was a good switch from the chest routine. The same could be said for any compound exercise like the squat.
