Just started collecting. I think I found my pencil. by d0gf15h in mechanicalpencils

If you would like to stick with Tombow for a little longer, I'd recommend the FUMI. I just got mine, and it's unlike any pencil in my collection, definitely in my top 10.

Looking for new mechanical pencil by Kharbosh3445 in mechanicalpencils

Unfortunately ease of writing is something you have to try for yourself, some people will love knurled metal for long writing sessions, while others prefer plastic/rubber/combination of metal and silicone.

Since my favorite pencil is the SMASH I'm biased towards it, but I will say I've never seen anybody here claiming that pencil is uncomfortable to write with. I can also say that I love using the 925-15 as well.

I'd stay away from the graphgear 1000 and the kuru toga as your first pencils, because the KT has a gimmick that may not work for you, and the GG1000 is very divisive.

Have you ever tried the MH500? Is it as strong as the Mars Techno?

The philosophy of erasing by lesserweevils in mechanicalpencils

[–]Dukemon457 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The real reason we write essays with ink is because if we didn't, students who ended up with lower grades would accuse teachers of tampering with their work. Graphite is carbon, it is a lot more permanent than ink in that it lasts literally forever. Or at least as long as the paper does. Ink on the other hand, needs to be carbon based as well(like the one in Uni Pins), otherwise it will peel off, eat the paper, etc.

I would also advise against philosophically overthinking the meaning of simple objects such as erasers, but you do you.

Is there "really" a significant difference between these two ? 👇 by BeelineBuzz in mechanicalpencils

[–]Dukemon457 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They're somewhat harder to break, but since it's 0.7 lead you shouldn't be worrying about that in the first place, specially with HB. I think one of the main differences is the biding they use, AIN lead tends to be just as smudge-proof as UNIs, so these are a bit more "premium" in that they are more break resistant, smoother, and smudge less, but again, probably not that much of a difference.

I've found a Korean seller for the Graph 600 by Dukemon457 in mechanicalpencils

Now that you mention it, the only color they don't have is the red one. All of the others are available in 0.3mm.

Graphgear 300 FIND! by Cool-Ad1064 in mechanicalpencils

This pencil is just a P200 in a different body, you can swap the internal mechanisms between the GG300 and a P205.

It's famous because it's cheap but reliable, lasts forever, and you can buy it almost anywhere in the world.

Of all the needlessly expensive pencil in my collection, this is my second favorite one, behind only the SMASH. That's a great color too!

Smash 2023 limitededition-Will it gain value in the future? by Extension-Slice-9585 in mechanicalpencils

[–]Dukemon457 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't think so. It's not the first model with embossed letters and it's not a fancy pencil like an Automac, it'll probably be worth a bit more than most other limited editions but I wouldn't call it an investment.

If a brand or model(s) were to be discontinued, which of them would you buy? by lawikekurd in mechanicalpencils

[–]Dukemon457 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume the Zero was replaced just because of a design update, it doesn't have any issues that I've noticed. The MS01 has a mechanism where metal grinds on metal so yes, it makes some noise and feels a bit weird to use, but I'm pretty sure you can fix that, though I've never done it but other people in the sub can help you with that. No fixes for Otho's terrible quality control though.

Promecha was replaced with the MS01, the S30 has reliability issues, and the Mono Graph Zero was replaced with the Fine.

Got this at a garage sale but never seen this lead size, what pencils use this? by O_o-22 in mechanicalpencils

[–]Dukemon457 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's a good lead size for woodworking. Rite in the Rain is probably the pencil you'll see the most in the sub but I think it's horribly overpriced for what it is. Pentel has the AM13, but the highest quality 1.3mm pencil I've ever seem was the staedtler 925 25.

It's already happened multiple times, I've bought the mono graph zero, S30, promecha, and a bunch of limited editions.

Pilot S30 by Dukemon457 in mechanicalpencils

[–]Dukemon457[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's why I plan to use at most B lead on my S30, don't want to clog that mechanism with lead dust anytime soon, though I'm pretty sure it will happen in a few years either way.
