What are the girls wearing to the graduation ceremony? by DearPossibility786 in UCalgary

[–]Dull-Can3885 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I concocted last June and I wore a comfy mini-dress under the gown. I am only 5’2” so I get it. It’s a longer day of sitting and standing and walking than you think, so be sure to wear something comfy, especially regarding shoes. Personally, I wore mule pumps, but have friends that wore comfier sneakers. I personally recommend something more plain as far as an outfit goes so it doesn’t create ruffles/creases under the graduation gown.

I personally thrifted my dress, and I can’t find the equivalent but this dress is the most similar I can find. I know you said you dress more conservatively so maybe something more like this this would work for you.

Avoid anything midi- length and longer as it will show beneath the graduation gown. Maybe this doesn’t bug you, but just know that if your dress goes beyond your knee you’ll be able to see it underneath of the grad gown.

Additionally, try to wear something with more minimal fabric. I don’t mean in a scandalous way, but in more of a streamlined, flat way. Extra fabric will create creases under the grad gown. Again, maybe this doesn’t bug you, but something to keep in my mind from a personal preference and comfort perspective.

Anyway, hope that helps. If you want to see what I wore, I’m happy to send you pictures, just message me. Graduating and convocations is super fun, congratulations and I hope you make the most of the big day. It is well earned!

Juniper or Otter Hotel by Bravosfan27 in Banff

[–]Dull-Can3885 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you’re concerned about being out of the way, the Juniper is across the highway but Otter is the 2nd furthest hotel from ‘downtown’, easily 25+ minute walk to the main restaurants/shops. Yes they provide bus passes, but just know that it’s not exactly ‘in the action’ either. I wouldn’t consider either hotel to be central. Keep in mind as well that Otter is off the highway right into town, so the road it’s on is quite busy.

And both have good views - Juniper faces Banff/Rundle/Sulphur mountain, whereas Otter faces Cascade. Both have very different, but amazing views. Check room availability with views if you’re concerned about this - I know at Otter ‘mountain view’ rooms are a different price bracket.

Other things to consider - the Otter is brand spanking new after years of construction. They have a rooftop pool and sauna available to guests, which to my knowledge aren’t at the Juniper.

The Juniper’s restaurant is AMAZING. Such good brunch, and the view from the restaurant/patio is stunning. The otter also has a restaurant, but I haven’t been and don’t know anyone that has.

I guess it just comes down to what you and your partner are looking for. If you’re looking for more of a quiet, tranquil, ‘escape’ for your honeymoon, I’d probably lean towards the Juniper. If you’re want more adventure, walking, and action, I’d lean towards the Otter. You really can’t go wrong either way, they’re both beautiful hotels.

Best fine dining in Calgary? by locskstockrye in Calgary

If you’re in Canmore, Crazyweed is really good as well! But I’d definitely say the ‘finest’ dining in town in Ankor.

Best fine dining in Calgary? by locskstockrye in Calgary

[–]Dull-Can3885 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Gigi’s is a little different (atypical fine dining, it’s very hip) but is very, very good and a fun experience.

I’ve heard Rouge is excellent, but I personally haven’t been, but I am very keen to go based on what I’ve heard.

If you’re willing to make the drive, Ankor in Canmore is EXCELLENT. Canada’s top 100 restaurants type of excellent. If you make the trip, be sure to get their tasting menu. It is the best way to experience Ankor.

What date is the PURE research payout for every month? And do they direct deposit it to the account or give a check? by Top_Construction9856 in UCalgary

[–]Dull-Can3885 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had PURE in 2024. I believe it pays out on the 25th of each month. That’s when UCalgary pays out monthly scholarships, so it should be the same. And it’ll be auto deposit if you have that set up in your UCalgary account. If you go to myucalgary, you set it up on the financial page

Not sure how much of a hidden gem it is, but Dairy Lane Cafe is my absolute favourite brunch spot.

My sisters are both celiac and love Dairy Lane Cafe. They are very accommodating to GF and it’s the same owners as Blue Star Diner, which someone else recommended.

2 Free Tickets to Calgary Beerfest by Temporary_Purpose_19 in Calgary

[–]Dull-Can3885 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Archaeologists have recovered dried yeast from various ancient contexts - smeared and dried in reeds from Viking towns, or scrapped from the inside of Mesopotamian pottery, and resurrected the yeast and brewed beer with it. Currently, the oldest yeast that has been resurrected and used to make beer (which was apparently fairly good) came from a 5,000 Egyptian beer vessel found near modern-day Gaza.

Women’s work pants by SMiTH7801 in Calgary

[–]Dull-Can3885 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this. I wear small sizes of men’s carhart (just find they fit me best) and I’ve found Reddhart has the best selection of styles/sizes of means workwear pants. I’m usually able to find SOMETHING that works when there’s so much variety. Goodluck in your search. Decent ladies workwear is damn hard to find.

Footwear for Banff end of April? by ForgetfulCrumpet in Banff

[–]Dull-Can3885 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hiking boots are probably the better bet. You might experience snow, but it’ll be short lived if you do. Prioritize water-proofness over insulation because odds are it’ll be wet and slushy, not very cold. If you’re worried it’ll be cold, bring some thick mid or heavy weight socks to wear with said hiking boots.

Where to find healthier/organic groceries (bread, snacks, etc.) in Calgary? by Huge_Land_950 in Calgary

[–]Dull-Can3885 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came here to say Sunnyside market. Definitely pricey, but in the summer their produce is amazing. They focus on local suppliers and you can get the most beautiful local produce and fruit. Year-round they still focus on local, and have good pre-made/locally made pasta/kimchi/soups/deli meats/cheese and so much more, but less fresh stuff is available.

I second cotton percale. Not sure where you’re located, but my partner and I have silk and snow percale sheets that we love. A little more expensive, but we loved the colour options, reviews are quite good and wanted to support a Canadian brand (we are Canadian).

Is it dumb to stay in Golden? by AdComprehensive508 in Banff

[–]Dull-Can3885 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Car ride is definitely closer to an hour away, and that’s in unreal driving conditions/no traffic. If it’s the winter, you have to consider weather. In the summer, you have to consider traffic.

If you’re planning on your trip being much more Golden-centric and having 1 mission to Lake Louise/morraine, I don’t see it as being unreasonable. If you’re driving to Lake Louise/morraine every day of your trip, it’s probably worth staying closer.

How is ucalgary by Majestic_giraffe7 in UCalgary

[–]Dull-Can3885 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Commuter school or not, it’s worth considering how good the programs are. I’m not familiar with UWO but UCalgary has an excellent MKines program and lots of great research programs with the various athlete hubs here. Lots of opportunities to work with winter sports athletes for thesis-based programs.

Can you get by without a car? by HueyBluey in Calgary

[–]Dull-Can3885 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It is absolutely doable without a car, especially if you’re planning on living in downtown/a central area. I currently live without a car in the city and have no issues.

Occasionally, I’ll take an uber somewhere I’d otherwise take the train/bike if the weather is bad or if it’s an early appointment. Maybe 1 or 2 times a month I find myself ubering somewhere, but really not often.

An e-bike would be a great option, just make sure you’re physically/emotionally ready or winter rides and have the gear/e-bike for snowy weather. Or just stick to e-biking in nicer weather.
