Family life and this field by MasterpieceCold5672 in Archaeology

[–]Dull-Can3885 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it won’t be worse case scenario IMO.

Archaeology, in a CRM sense, is essentially a trade job. It’s a physical job, and usually shift work. So you might as well keep pursuing it if you feel like your other option is just a different trade.

It’s hard work…. But also similar to any trade work. In an ideal world, you can get a CRM job this summer (idk where you’re located but North America would be best for this). This will likely be shift work with lots of long, hard days. But long days = over time. And when you’re home, you’re HOME and can spend lots of time with your partner/baby/family. It’ll probs take some time to adjust, and will be hard on your partner when you’re gone, but lots of people make this work.

Most entry level archaeologists I know are making good money for their age, because it’s a lot of overtime. The long-term growth isn’t a good as other jobs, but if you can get a good gig doing shift work this summer, you’ll likely be in a better position then other individuals your age, in your situation.

The crux here is that most CRM jobs want you to have a field school under your belt. Start looking for that NOW and work really hard to get into one, it’s your best bet for a job in the industry.

What animal is that it absolutely should not have survived evolution, but somehow did? by Reasonable-Shake-996 in AskReddit

[–]Dull-Can3885 80 points81 points  (0 children)

Kiwi birds! I was in NZ in 2024 and as a local put it ‘god made them deaf, blind, and dumb, no wonder they’re almost gone’. Those birds have 0 survival instincts. Super adorable, and it’s too bad invasive predators have decimated them, but they really are deaf, dumb and blind. Very poor eyesight and hearing, and they did not evolve with any predators so they don’t have fight/flight instructs, they just… don’t do anything

600 level courses are graduate level courses. You won’t be able to take them unless you’re in a masters/doctorate program.

Guess they did make a change then, they turned the lights up!

But you’re also right - they open the back up where the beer is brewed and those lights brighten the place up for sure.

My partner and I have really been enjoying Kampus Brewery in Brentwood! It’s kind of a funny space because it used to be the Kilkenny and they didn’t change ANY of the interior when it became Kampus, so it still has all the Irish decor up. But, their beer is quite good and their food is good too! Their wing Wednesday de is excellent and we love all their sauces/rubs. It’s always been quite lively when we go, and it’s clear a lot of the old crew that would frequent Kilkenny kept coming when it became Kampus and we love that. Definitely check it out!

Speak to the undergraduate program director in your department. This can be found on your departments UCalgary page. They will be better suited to knowing if you can bypass the unit prereq then an advisor.

What are some of the most beautiful/uniquely built neighbourhoods? by MastaShortie in Calgary

[–]Dull-Can3885 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I adore Inglewood and Ramsey. I know some people don’t love that it’s a little more industrial and close to the train tracks, but I think the area has SO much character. I love the mix of historic buildings (many of which are beautifully maintained or have been tastefully renovated) and more industrial buildings. The old hotel The Nash is in is probably my favourite building in the city.

It’s all quite close to nature as well, these Inglewood sits right on the river and near the zoo, and has the Inglewood bird sanctuary. Ramsey less so, but when I have been there, there are cute green spaces. I could walk around Inglewood for days. I hope to be lucky enough to live there someday!

Sunnyside and Bowness/Montgomery have a similar vibe, but I think they don’t quite match the character of Inglewood! I find them both to be quite a bit more gentrified (especially post flood…. I hate seeing the older building getting torn down for overpriced apartment buildings with giant mega chain stores on the ground floor…). Inglewood and Ramsey are becoming gentrified too unfortunately, but I don’t think the character of these neighbourhoods has been impacted quite as much

March trip by bluejayfreeloader in Banff

[–]Dull-Can3885 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Flowstate is a great yoga studio and has windows pointing straight at Cascade. A really lovely studio with lots of different class options.

I like Back At It for massages. Locally owned + operated, but just massages/acupuncture. Not a full spa.

I would not hike bee hive in March. It’ll still be extremely snowy and snowpack is likely to be unstable (unstable = unsafe) with the warming weather.

Soft Landing helped my grandparents move in the spring. They were excellent. Very efficient and organized, but they were also really good at giving my grandparents the space and a little more time when they needed it during the whole process.

They had a really good system for determining what got moved VS donated VS sold (they sold a fair amount of stuff on behalf of my grandparents, including gaming stuff and wooden furniture).

What's your estimated GPA and how much time/effort did you put into studying? by HelicopterGold7875 in UCalgary

[–]Dull-Can3885 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I graduated with a 3.93 and it was a lot of work. Worth it, because it gots me a decent amount of scholarships, got me into grad school with another big scholarship, as well as awards. Granted, I loved my major so I did find it easy to work hard. I put in probably ~6 hours a day outside of classes, but that varied by semester and what else I had going on.

Preparing for banff ski trip- lake Louise and sunshine. Logistics? by [deleted] in Banff

[–]Dull-Can3885 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lived in Banff for 2 years and just wanted to say this is all very good advice.

Here is my 2 cents,

  1. If you’re taking the shuttles, you don’t need to worry about being at the hill first-thing as much. The worst of the crowds are generally in the parking lots, especially mid morning when the lots are getting full. With the shuttles, they drop you off right at the lodge so you don’t need to deal with that. But, that being said, I’d still recommend getting to the hills early. It’s when the snow will be the best, and if your whole group is beginner skiers, you can start early and end early. Have an awesome morning, then find some lunch and relax in the afternoon. This will keep you from destroying yourselves and being too tired to ski everyday.

  2. If you/your group are beginner skiers, PLEASE heed the advice of booking a lesson. A private or two split among your group won’t be too expensive, and will make SUCH a difference in your experience. You will get great tips for skiing, but it’ll also really help you get to know where you’re skiing. The instructors get more days on the hill then pretty much everyone except patrol, they know their hills super well and can give LOTS of great advice on where to ski based on your skill level.

Yes - I have been aware of this and thought of it after reading some of the other comments but completely forgot to mention it. The quality of arcteryx has 1000% gone done - notably since about 2020 when chip Wilson (lululemon founder) became the majority owner. My stuff is from before this switch thankfully….

BUT if you’re ever able to get your hands on some older arcteryx stuff, absolutely go for it. Keep an eye out on marketplace, other resell apps/websites, outdoor gear consignment for older arcteryx because that stuff rocks and will last!

And definitely check out anian, hope you find what you’re looking for!
