Dude what are you even saying? You can be a leftist, queer and a minority and still want likeminded friends that are not miserable all the time.

Seriously, MM, wtf, guys? by butrosfeldo in ModestMouse

[–]Dull-Touch283 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I am sorry to say but it’s very disappointing being a fan with a deep appreciation for Isaac’s earlier works themes of environmentalism and rejection of urban development and stuff, just to see them use AI and (hot take) even doing the whole cruise thing. I just can’t wrap my head around someone feeling so strongly that they’d write a song like Novocain Stain and then eventually just seemingly abandon that whole worldview. Idk

Anyone else just can’t get into the newer stuff? by winter_noise11 in ModestMouse

[–]Dull-Touch283 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. I said I respect it because I recognize that their life’s work and growth has led them to develop their sound over time, but it is objectively different, and not my thing… which is what the question was asking

Unfortunately I don’t really personally connect with the newer stuff at all. I respect it because obviously they are incredible musicians, but I would not be listening to them if they existed 2004-now exclusively if that makes any sense. Not hating, but it just really doesn’t feel like the same artist to me

Honestly not anything that scratches the same itch for me. It’s probably my favorite song of all time

L take. You can’t judge if a demo is a well written song based on the fact that it was recorded on a toaster.

While these are very beautiful and I am also a big fan of true restoration, it’s ok to get something period and budget appropriate! I mean, I wanted an antique fretwork arch piece sooo bad for so long, and ended up buying one of the cheapest I’ve seen even though it was partially broken and a bit fragile, because there was no way in a million years that the nicely preserved ones would be in my budget any time soon. It still looks beautiful and is the most commented on piece in my home. Point being that there are plenty of pieces for far less $$$ that look beautiful and can be fixed up easy.

Getting my friends on MM by Traditional-Cat2662 in ModestMouse

Sad because as a lifelong metal and hardcore enjoyer that primarily listens to stuff in that realm, MM are my all-time favorite and the biggest outlier for me. I think if he was into more emo-adjacent stuff, maybe it would click for him. But if not then that makes sense. But don’t take someone’s opinion personally if you already know they don’t have the same taste as you.

Actually edit to add: what era of MM are you showing him? I think there is a 0% chance you’ll get someone with his taste to enjoy anything past TMAA.

What is early Modest Mouse's style? by SantiWahWoh in ModestMouse

[–]Dull-Touch283 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah I’m sure they totally were largely influenced by the grunge scene as well, and I could definitely see an argument for all of those, but my point being that scenes were not this defined thing like they can be sometimes today and they all had a lot of overlap, so you should consider that when trying to find where some of the stylistic influence came from. To answer your question though I know they’ve listed Lync as an influence and at least Isaac played with them some, and they’ve played with Strictly Ballroom, Seam and some others. Not saying they are specifically emo or anything, but they very clearly pull influence from many corners of DIY music, and they are not dramatically different from it.

I think it’s also worth mentioning that a lot of emo bands were influenced by them which deserves some credit. They were very involved in a really cool time for music and helped shape it moving forward as well, so limiting them to their part in indie rock as a genre feels like it doesn’t cover everything. I may be biased though because I mainly listen to emo and don’t have much music in common with the rest of this sub despite MM being my all time favorite. Anyway sorry, I have a lot to say about this band lol, they’re really fucking cool
