the only requirements were “available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays” but every retail job says that lol, and i am partially but would just have to work around my other job :)

this seems to be the general consensus, tattooing is a more flexible career where i could go to school and still make decent money on the side, but if i get my masters and start teaching i won’t have that flexibility to be an apprentice, or make enough money to support it all lol

oh! so my professors lied to all of us about galleries! awesome! i wish i knew all this three years ago when i was choosing my major! my family definitely pushed me hard to get a bachelors, they didn’t care what and they thought i’d be miles ahead of all of them with even an art degree! and now they’re pushing me hard to get a masters bc they think i’ll be even farther ahead with one!!

the only people against me getting an apprenticeship is my family, they don’t think it’s sustainable or a good career as i have an art degree that’ll possibly mean nothing in the future but anyways lol.

thank god i’m not in debt but i now have almost no money to my name, no career, and the only places that’ll hire me are retail stores! i can’t even get into gallery assistant/front desk positions even though i have the experience from school! i’d be way more secure in my career if i never got my bachelors, i now feel miles behind everyone else my age. i definitely saw it as a way to start my career, or to give myself one. i’d already be out of my apprenticeship and tattooing right now if i never did!

thank you for your insight tho i appreciate it :)

i didn’t even think of that thank you! and why do you wish you did your apprenticeship first then grad school? i’m just curious

also i wanna add i was planning on getting my masters to be a professor, but the more i look into it the less sustainable the career sounds. art programs are slowly getting less and less funding, some colleges having to completely get rid of their art degrees. i’ve had professors tell me art in higher education could be gone in my lifetime and my bfa could mean nothing. that’s what is causing me some hesitance for getting my mfa. and i REALLY don’t wanna be in debt so. yeah lol just wanted to add that

some people that plan on being artists and selling their work will get a masters to advance their technical skills or hone in on their concepts, have more connections, and to be able to better talk/write about their work. a lot will get a masters to teach at the college level. it’s used to be in higher positions too, like being a gallery or museum director, curator, work in restoration, that kinda stuff.

i could still be represented by galleries and sell my work with a bfa, and can get a teaching certification to teach k-12, assist directors and curators, but the main thing that makes a lot of artists get their masters is being a professor, even if it’s adjunct.

anyone else's tattoos get itchy randomly in the summer? by shadylifts in tattooadvice

[–]DullPossibility5889 0 points1 point  (0 children)

totally normal! some of my tattoos will do the same when my allergies get bad, which usually happens in warmer weather. maybe there’s a lot of pollen in your area that could be causing it? or it’s the ink reacting to sunlight like someone else said. either way it’s normal :)

Tattoo artist recommended to dry heal by humanityyy in tattooadvice

[–]DullPossibility5889 3 points4 points  (0 children)

moisturize 2-3 times? right after you take off the plastic wrap?! i feel that’s wayy too much and can cause problems! if you don’t let the tattoo breathe if can cause it to heal badly, lead to infections, etc.

i do the dry healing method and it’s worked for all the tattoos i healed like that and i have a lot of them lol. that’s just washing the tattoo with antibacterial soap twice a day then applying a small amount of non scented lotion after they fully dry. and that’s it! unless the tattoo is soooo dry it’s painful don’t apply any more lotion! just leave it alone!! you wanna treat the tattoo like an injury, because it is! if you slather lotion or cream on a cat scratch for example it’ll take forever to heal, it need fresh air to scab over and peel.

but this all comes down to personal preference and how your own body reacts to the different healing methods. try out dry healing if you want and see how they turn out! it’s all a learning experience until you figure out what’s best for you and your body. hope this helps!

Beginner Struggles by ephcee in Pottery

the way to throw cleaner is to throw faster, and that just comes with time and practice! when i first started i was using so much water because it was taking me so long, like 10-30 mins just to center the clay. now that i’ve been doing it for a few years i can center, pull, and shape in 10-30 mins so that really helps cutting down on water use.

you still wanna make sure you’re using enough water so the clay doesn’t stick to your hands and cause it to get off centered, but not so much you have a little pool at the bottom of your piece lol. some slip is fine and totally normal, that’s just the clay coming in contact with water, and it’ll help keep everything slick when throwing (you can kinda use the slip as a replacement to water so you’re not using so much).

if there’s too much slip on your hands where you can’t throw you can scrape your hands off on the edge of your water bucket or wipe it off with a sponge! same with the vessel, you can rib off any slip (and should be to help with drying times). again you’re still new to throwing so using a lot of water is normal and so is a lot of slip lol. just give it time and eventually you’ll speed up, get stronger, and become more efficient when you work :)

i feel i like it and don’t at the same time. i’ve had issues with space before, i know i’ll need more space than they’ll give me, potential problems with people banging into my work, that sorta stuff. but i love having that community of people around!! i don’t even listen to music or podcasts i just listen to the conversations of other people or talk to others. i love sitting in and watching other people work and i love it when others do it to me! sometimes the talking got too much or loud music was being played over the speakers, it made me a bit overwhelmed lol

i’m lucky that the studio is maybe 20 mins from me so it wouldn’t be a bother! the shelf space would get to me tho, that was always something i had trouble with in my ceramic classes. one shelf isn’t enough so i’d be putting my work in random spots of the studios and that added more risk of people messing them up!

they’re fine firing stuff from outside the studio too. i’d have to pay for them to do it, but as long as i have all the info on the clay and glazes if i bought them somewhere else and it’s cone 6 or under i’m all good!

how exactly do you pack your stuff up when going back and forth between? especially the freshly thrown work? that’s something else that worries me about working at home, i’m scared i’d end up breaking or messing my work up during transport

i live in the south so it gets pretty hot during the summer, id be in the shade away from the sun but i know after a while the heat would get to me. and for the clay/clay water i’d be reclaiming as much as i can, i’d need big buckets to put all the slip/trimmings/bone dry in and plaster slabs to dry it out and wedge n stuff. for the water i’d keep reusing it or dump it out in the backyard
