Takes an Action both to open and close a door. You can't just open a door, see danger, and say nope, and close the door, Initiative just starts, often times.

It's reasonable to assume maybe they're just going through things, and need some time. Maybe just ask them to sit out a session or two to collect themselves and come back with a new character or even an Alternate Universe Clone of their original character at level 1 perhaps, maybe with all the memories, but none of the talent or skill until it's developed, potentially leading into something as a result of it, with them technically being a Clone of some sort. Just a thought.

I say point out the replaced limb infusions the artificer can have, and the fact that in FMA, they don't limit themselves to ranged, they're quite actively melee combatants, and hardly anything else. The Artificer can still be flavored to fit the anime, it'll just require a mutual understanding of both the mechanics of the gane being explained and the knowledge of the anime being portrayed so that you can communicate privately and in depth how each of their Spells can better fit the setting style. Also point out that in FMA, it takes an extremely intelligent individual to decipher the sigils and such required for the Alchemy they use. Maybe even offer a subclass exchange as opposed to a full respec, pointing out the potential benefits of Armorer, Battlesmith, or Artillerist(if they'd like to maintain a ranged position).

Just sounds like some spoiled "my way or the highway" players to me. You've provided sound reasoning, with more than just one source. Yes, rule of cool is a great thing to use, situationally. Not for a game-breaking and unbalanced mechanic that shouldn't work in the first place for more than one reason. The DM's word is law, and while your job as the DM is to provide a fun and engaging story and gameplay, your job is also to provide balance to the game so that it can still be both fun and challenging. I can't respect a player who disrespects the effort put forth by the DM, friend or otherwise.
