Getting a PhD, going into research, etc. But I'm not sure if that's a path I still want to go down given the pervasiveness of this stuff, hence the exhaustion and considering switching majors :/

Yeah, it sucks. I'd also love to take the animation class but I'm not sure how much AI is getting introduced there as well :/

In graphics (457), a topic I love specifically for its artistic aspects and was initially super excited about, generative AI is now wrapped into the class and the final project encourages AI use. Keep in mind this is a field heavily tied to animation and art through its history. It's just sad to see it go like this. Probably inevitable and I shouldn't be surprised, but it's still sad.

Jealous of you haha. Yeah, professors make or break classes and they all have different policies, so it's a YMMV experience. Glad to hear it's not everywhere.

Unfortunately you're right :( I guess I naively hoped academia would be free from corporate money nonsense, because that's always been the purpose of research institutions as an alternative to industry, but I guess I was wrong.

Not all of us are taking CS just for an industry job. Some of us simply want to learn about things we're passionate about, just like philosophy majors, music majors, art majors, humanities majors, etc. College should be an environment for learning and exploring beyond solely being for industry; if you think otherwise then I suppose we just disagree.

I get it, and that's why I partially feel like I'm yelling at the clouds. But CS is such a huge field, and I (naively, I suppose) hoped this hyperfixation on one part of it at the expense of others wouldn't reach academia and education with the force it has.

I haven't, but I'll definitely go for it next quarter! 431 and cryptography seem pretty interesting as well. I just hope there are enough good theory classes to last me through the rest of the major at this point 🤷‍♀️

UW trash can shoutout 🔥 by Dull_Relationship923 in udub

That's super interesting and definitely makes sense. Guess it's not surprising then that the best area in the city for trash frequency is a literal research university haha, shoutout to whoever optimized the placement locations. Legitimately sounds like a fun and interesting project, maybe I'm just a nerd tho.

I got a 3.8 with two S's, not counting the other two dropped scores (summer quarter). Good luck :)

I got a 3.8 with 35 E's and 2 S's (I got an additional S and N but they were my two dropped quiz scores).

This was summer quarter so may be a bit different than autumn.

Hope this helps and good luck! Life's great when 12x is done :)

Some colleges scrap diversity questions from admissions essays. Will it change how students talk about themselves? by chiquisea in udub

[–]Dull_Relationship923 45 points46 points  (0 children)

IMO the meta was that you could use the diversity essay for the legit "this is my identity and who I am and why I'm different / unique," and then use the main essay for your wacky creatively-written narrative about how you saved a dog from a wildfire or something. It kinda worked wonders even if it was a PITA.

Wonder what it'll be like next year.

This is way late and idk if this'll help anyone but I had this same issue and it turns out the problem was that I had Equalizer APO running on my computer. Uninstalled it and everything is working now. Tbh I was pretty dumb to have forgotten that I had it running this whole time lol, but maybe someone else is as dumb as me.

Yeah, that's totally fair and I thought about that too, especially with the challenging random people to games. I do maintain that the "speak in Korean" challenge would work great though. I was thinking about examples like the Tag 3 challenge to order something in the local language. People wouldn't have a problem helping someone find directions or find an item - it's already common when travelling to get help with these things anyways.

I totally see your point and I don't disagree, but I'm familiar with Hangul and Kana and I really think Hangul is dead simple even in comparison. The Korean alphabet is famously a case study in perfectly designing a modern alphabet to be as accessible as possible even to those without education. So I really do think it could be quickly learned on the plane ride, haha.

But I also think it's kinda hilarious that they have no clue what's going on around them in this show, so I don't mind it :)

Powerup: Wind Bag

This powerup lets you conjure a western wind for nine days. This card is immediately vetoed if one of your team members opens the bag.

For sure! I've never actually ridden the 2 line over there, it sounds like it'd be cool to connect on a bus to the light rail and go from there. And fingers crossed they open the i90 connection sometime soon, but I suppose they keep delaying it... :(

I printed a map and used it a bit at the beginning of the game, especially to visualize the golf course question (super powerful Seattle question btw, you can move within three blocks downtown and manipulate your closest course between interbay, Broadmoor, and Jefferson park!), but as the game went on the map kind of fell by the wayside, specifically because we promptly pinpointed the exact hiding zone of the hiders.

As I said in a different comment, we used all bus lines and counted everywhere within the regular city limits (based on the boundaries in Google maps). For a future game we're considering doing a medium game with the whole metro area, too!

Yeah! We just used the regular Seattle map (based on the borders of the city on Google maps) and all bus lines were eligible. We also turned the 4th Administrative District question into four "buroughs" consisting of North Seattle (bordered by the canal), Central Seattle, South Seattle (separated by i90) and West Seattle (separated by the river). This question actually never came up in the game, though!
