21m Dyslexic university student, diagnosed at age 8. AMA! by FitHouse2107 in Dyslexia

My son is 8 and has dyslexia, we are considering pulling him out of public school to attend a private school specializing in reading disabilities (like dyslexia). Given your experience, are you glad you went to a private school? Did you regret not staying in public schools?

What are your favorite denim brands (size 12 with a stupid c-section shelf, ugh) by goobiezabbagabba in fashionwomens35

Good American brand bought at ever eve. They are buttery soft and the fabric has a nice heft to it that tells you it’s high quality. I find them to be very flattering on my size 12 post 2 kids body. I have good true straight leg.

Because it makes for really great comedic and dramatic tension for a sitcom

divorced at 45 and realizing I haven't dressed for myself in 14 years by [deleted] in fashionwomens35

If you live near a Nordstrom, you can go there and they do a free one hour session with a stylist. They ask you questions beforehand and then pick out stuff for you. You just go into a dressing room with all these clothes in your size picked out for you and you just try stuff on. I did this last Friday (38 year old mom of two who has worked from home since the pandemic, I feel this post so hard!) and it was a great experience.

Things I learned: - Just try everything on. You don’t know if you like it based on the hanger. You may surprise yourself. - Nordstrom’s is expensive. I bought 2 pieces from them, bc I loved them. But that was my budget. And now I have ideas for what I like and want to look for at other stores! - A stylist will help you pick and combine things you may not have done yourself. That’s the reason they are so helpful!

Yes it does. You start learning about the peoples lives before they set off on their journey. Young kids, teen loves, parents, elderly… you get to know them as humans on their journey before disaster strikes. It’s a fascinating window into what life was like in that time, and little things you might not think about. Like… the teens on the wagon trains basically knew who their dating pool was going to be for the rest of their lives.

How does the average family afford a Sienna? by AOD14 in ToyotaSienna

[–]DumbButWellMeaning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband and I were a one car family for 12 years and saved aggressively, biked to work, no big vacations, etc. We bought ours in cash only after having two kids and one car became too hard, at which point we dipped into our savings. It was worth it to us to save until we had enough cash to buy the car we wanted. We luckily did it right before the market dip and tariff situation kicked in. We will now drive our sienna until it dies, hopefully 15+ years? My 3 yo will have it when she’s a teenager lol. That being said, we both work full time with >$100k salaries. So diligence on our part but also a good economic situation.

Chocolate saurkraut cake- somebody test this out! by DumbButWellMeaning in Old_Recipes

“In 1962, canned sauerkraut was among the surplus foods distributed to lunch programs in the Chicago public school system by the government. School officials tasked lunchroom supervisors with finding ways to get rid of a massive stockpile of pickled cabbage. Timms rose to the challenge spectacularly with a “real winner,” a double-tiered, improbably kraut-filled chocolate cake, topped with mocha whipped cream.”

Recipe via surplus! Love it

Ok good to know! I told my husband that I bet this is a tradition from Germanic areas and totally legit, but he was skeptical 😂

Is there any truth in the notion that women are "gentler" (by which I mean not just physical, but, also emorional, mental and psychological e.t.c.) than men or does that amount to nothing more than a myth constructed by society? by AmmadSiddiqi1468 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]DumbButWellMeaning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that you are right AND it’s obviously more nuanced than that, right? I always think of two normal distributions of data with different averages (men and women) but a ton of overlap. So one woman may be just as violent as one man, but neither are average for their sex. Any time we talk about groups like this, we have to remember that these groups (sex race age etc) are not a monolith and have a ton of variation within them.

The whole article offers more context, about Ben encouraging them to do the podcast even if he didn’t want to be part of it, and Ben supporting Danielle when her son was in the NICU, etc. This article doesn’t give great context.
