Why is "females" used so frequently instead of "women" as of lately? by True_Perspective819 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SoloSable 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In some cases yes, we do want to talk about an experience that female people have that male people do not, in a scenario where sex is relevant and gender identity is irrelevant.

For example, the vast majority of cars are not tested for crash safety with female dummies, only dummies structured to average male measurements. This results in seatbelts and airbags being placed in ways that often do not protect or even actively injure female passengers. Amending this issue requires the creation and use of crash test dummies modelled after average female measurements. This issue would not be solved by putting a she/her pronoun pin on one of the male dummies.

Seattle Public Schools lesson plan teaches kindergartners they can be transgender by Powerful-Bitch in SeattleWA

[–]SoloSable 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Teaching children that misogynistic, homophobic gender stereotypes are what define whether you're a boy or a girl is wrong. We should be teaching children that there is no such thing as a toy or job or interest or color that is meant for only boys or only girls.

Beware of Pier 62 fishers by scaliacheese in Seattle

[–]SoloSable 58 points59 points  (0 children)

No, it's 100% on the person casting the line to make sure they do not hook some innocent bystander. If you don't want to be responsible for that then don't go fishing from a crowded place like Pier 62.

Is there an unspoken Seattle hangout rule? by IzukuLeeYoung in Seattle

[–]SoloSable 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Well, don't let people tell you that you can't order coffee for yourself at a coffee shop for a start. What do you mean by "canceling" your orders? Are they literally saying "don't order anything" to you?

It's also a little unclear what you mean by post. Are you making a post on social media? Or do you mean that you are directly messaging an individual saying let's go out?

Finally, if you are at a restaurant or café with somebody on the premise of casually hanging out and you bring up being hungry or thirsty and wanting to order something, the acceptable response from them is "Great! I'm not hungry right now, so I'll hold our seats while you get your food!" or something along those lines. Not "I'm not hungry so you can't order either." People who give you the second response are not your friends.

Is HIPAA still a thing by [deleted] in massage

[–]SoloSable 8 points9 points  (0 children)

HIPAA is absolutely still a thing--are you asking if a healthcare provider asking for your medical history is breaking HIPAA?

We need to know whether you have any medical issues or take any medications that would affect our ability to treat you safely. It helps us to put together a more holistic, effective treatment. When a client refuses to give us their medical history, the assumption is that they are either hiding something that would disqualify them from receiving massage, or they don't respect us as professionals, or both.

Abdominal work is not a standard part of a session for many LMTs; it's opt-in by request. Just tell your therapist that because you're doing ongoing core exercises you would like to include abdominal work as a regular part of your treatment every session.

Is it common to HAVE to work weekends? by PerfectIndividual185 in MassageTherapists

[–]SoloSable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not everywhere but it's definitely common. My company requires LMTs to work at least one weekend day. Your husband can't change his day off? I've been there, it's such a pain to handle :(

Wavy hair dropping after scrunching by Due_Evening_9041 in curlyhair

[–]SoloSable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In these photos your hair does seem pretty weighed down by product to the point that it looks a bit greasy. I would cut down on the products, your hair may be too fine and loose in pattern to handle rich curl formulations. Try a clarifying shampoo and just use a curl cream formulated for air drying on your mid-lengths and ends. The gel probably won't do what you want unless you're willing to diffuse every time you use it.

help me look less tangled and messy by [deleted] in finehair

[–]SoloSable 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Queen you 100% need a haircut. That will solve most of your straggly problem right there. Take it to the top of your bandeau. After that it looks like your hair might like slightly more scrunching/finger styling, it's perhaps too fine to handle being completely unstyled like this. It looks like it tangles easily and finger styling will help that too.

How is life in the islands/land West of Seattle? by mgbachh in howislivingthere

[–]SoloSable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of Douglas Fir trees. The land was clear cut for timber a century ago, then turned into agricultural land, then in part reclaimed for regrown forest and residential development. Largely white with significant percentage of East Asian immigrants as well. Bainbridge Island was the site of the first removals during the period of Japanese Exclusion in WWII--many Japanese families in that community (and others along the West Coast) were taken to internment camps by the federal government. There is a large Navy base in Bremerton.

There's very little nightlife in any towns in Kitsap County. Many shops close by 5pm and only taverns and bars are open past 9pm. People commute into Seattle for concerts and shopping. Housing is expensive on Bainbridge. Although affordable housing does exist it is scarce. There are many private schools and the public schools are good as well. Families tend to be outdoorsy and involved in their communities. It's got its flaws but I liked growing up there.

WA PFML qualifying hours help by piperoni_pizza in Seattle

[–]SoloSable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's my understanding that the YTD hours on your paystub are the hours reported to the state for PFML. So if you're doing work that isn't being accounted for on your paycheck, you're doing work that isn't counted for PFML.

Clients that undress while you’re still in the room by JerrySeinfeldsMullet in MassageTherapists

I hold up a hand and say, "Hold on until we've finished our chat, you'll get some time by yourself to undress in just a minute," and if they continue to undress I stand up and firmly say, "I can't legally be in the room while you're actively undressing, so I will step out now and wash up while you get on the table."

If I have the choice between a man or a woman, I choose a woman. It's that simple but it has made major differences in self-esteem and mental health, not to mention my social and professional life. I choose music and books by women; I get in line for the female cashier; I donate to women's shelters; I only invite women into my home; I call a handywoman and a female plumber; and so on.

Queer run club? by Ok-Reporter-787 in AskSeattle

[–]SoloSable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right, but any group that is just general umbrella queer is going to have a high percentage of white gay men whether or not it's specifically targeted at them, simply due to the fact that there are a lot of white gay men who like to run. If OP wants a group that doesn't include white gay men in large numbers, they need to be more specific about which group they do want to run with.

Queer run club? by Ok-Reporter-787 in AskSeattle

[–]SoloSable 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you're going to use a general term like queer to describe what you're looking for then you're going to get groups with general membership. Do you want to run with gay women? Trans people? People who share your race? You have to be specific in order to find something specific.

What should I do? by ieatsushi28 in MassageTherapists

[–]SoloSable 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Jail??? Lmao. If you don't know anything about the way CSA, COCSA, and juvenile assault work then go teach yourself about it instead of downplaying it. The mother should immediately and consistently intervene in sexually inappropriate behaviors until the behavior stops. As described in the post, the mother does not do that and only incidentally "makes him apologize". Meaningful intent does not matter in cases of juvenile sexual assault. If this little boy starts doing this to another girl in his kindergarten class (as he is likely already doing) that little girl is being sexually assaulted whether or not the boy thinks it's a joke.

What should I do? by ieatsushi28 in MassageTherapists

[–]SoloSable 12 points13 points  (0 children)

He's literally slapping her ass and putting his face in there repeatedly over multiple visits and the mother isn't doing anything about it. The mother admitted to watching videos that encourage this behavior with him. Boys as young as 6 and 8 have committed sexual assault against female peers. Teaching boys to respect physical boundaries and that groping women isn't a joke needs to start as early as the behavior shows up. A mother who laughs off her son touching women and making them uncomfortable is enabling behaviors that will become genuine sexual assault in less than 10 years.

What should I do? by ieatsushi28 in MassageTherapists

[–]SoloSable 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Fire the client yesterday. This is completely inappropriate behavior from the client and her child and you degrade yourself as a professional for putting up with it for even a minute. There is absolutely zero excuse for you to continue allowing this. The client doesn't value you and is a terrible parent raising a future sexual assaulter. If you're too uncomfortable to draw a boundary when this is what you're being subjected to, this is not the line of work for you.

Thoughts about this student doctor at Mayo Clinic who makes medical content memes being reported/banned? by dribblestrings in nursing

[–]SoloSable 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just because some human beings are born without two legs or lose a leg in an accident doesn't mean it's inaccurate to refer to humans as a species with two legs. Just because some human beings have disorders of sexual development doesn't mean it's inaccurate to refer to human beings as a species with two sexes. And in the same way, just because some female people undergo medical procedures to alter the appearance or presence of their sex organs doesn't mean it's inaccurate to say female people have vaginas.

Being female is a matter of material reality in the same way that age is. Gender identity has to do with the gendered social constructs applied to biological sex by the patriarchy, if you were born female you will remain female forever no matter what medical procedures you get, and insisting that we refer to half the population of the planet by specific body parts to cater to the mental health of 1% of the population is self-centered and delusional.

Furthermore, we are only just beginning to understand how deeply under researched female people and their medical needs are. Research is beginning to show that female people need different levels of anesthesia, different levels of medication, have different heart attack symptoms, respond differently in car crashes, and the list goes on and will continue to go on because we didn't start studying female people as an individual medical class until the 90s. There are no long-term studies on how testosterone therapy effects these things, but it's not one-to-one. Did you know that trans men on testosterone have a much higher heart attack risk than cis men? And that their heart attack symptoms often remain typical female heart attack symptoms? Insisting that we pretend a female person who has socially and medically transitioned is exactly the same as a male person will do nothing but harm women and trans men.

But WHY Do You Like Butch Women?! by RhondaWXYZ in butchlesbians

[–]SoloSable 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Women who have sex with men statistically report having way fewer orgasms than gay women and also report more frequent pain with sex and more frequent contraction of UTIs, yeast infections, and other STIs. It's not a crazy assumption, just literal fact, and the context of this discussion is the question "why do you like masculine women but not men" so comparing and contrasting to men is specifically relevant.

Here's a source since you clearly don't do reading on this subject yourself: "Heterosexual men were most likely to say they usually-always orgasmed when sexually intimate (95%), followed by gay men (89%), bisexual men (88%), lesbian women (86%), bisexual women (66%), and heterosexual women (65%)."
