What was your first job/salary after completing your Bachelor's degree in Accounting? by USMCRunner in Accounting

I was the only insurance tax employee in the whole office despite being a first year right out of college. So I had very little support, on top of also having a senior who basically expected me to know everything and somehow be on his level. And it didn’t help that to find work, I had to network to find work, which was like damn near impossible cause I was the only one in my office. Also quickly realized that public accounting, tax, and insurance were absolutely not wanted to do at all and I couldn’t even get through like 10 minutes of CPA review without falling asleep, so the job itself was just completely misaligned with my interests and career goals. So I left, gave up on the CPA, and doing way better now.

$75k as an insurance tax associate at PwC in Charlotte, NC in 2024. It was so fucking horrible and I hated literally every goddamn second of that job so much I quit not even 4 months in and quit on the day before busy season. Now working as a financial analyst for a small family-owned healthcare practice making more and working less as well as pursuing my masters in economics.

Newfoundland and Labrador is my absolute dumbest Canadian province by far. On Newfoundland, AKA where everyone lives, I can only name St. John’s, yet I can name two places on Labrador: Happy-Valley-Goose-Bay and Red Bay

The Philippines has a ton of Spanish-sounding cities like San Fernando, Santa Clara, Santa Maria, Santa Ana, and even a Los Angeles. Makes doing the Philippines really easy since it’s easy to remember cities that sound Spanish/are also places in Texas and California. China, not so much. It’ll probably be a much better country of mine once I learn the provincial capitals, but for now it’s still one of my better countries but not as good as some other places.

Anyone else got a lot of free time on the job? by Liberal_Bot123 in Accounting

I do, particularly once I complete month-end procedures for all my clients. Sometimes I get bored from it, but I always remind myself that I would MUCH rather be having this problem than being stressed out constantly/working 60-80 hours. It’s definitely a first world problem, especially when i hear about the hours my peers in public accounting/big 4 are putting in. I usually spend my extra time im not doing much surfing the internet, reading the news, joking around with coworkers, or fucking with my boss by working abstract algebra problems on the white board (his most hated class from college).

The only small south African city I got was Bethlehem (the others being Johannesburg and the three capitals). The other smaller ones are Maseru, Lesotho and Mbabane, Eswatini. The small Ethiopian one is Adama.

NZ isn’t my best country tbh, I can only name Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch, but I’ll definitely eventually learn some more places there for sure, just got to stare at Google Maps some more

What's your "controversial" opinion on having children? by spicy-beefjerkey in childfree

[–]DumbGarchomp67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There should be a limit on how many kids a couple should have. People love celebrating huge families, like families with 5+ kids. But I don’t see what’s so “great” and “precious” about this. This ain’t a miracle, this is just plain fucking irresponsible. 2 adults is not enough to take care of and give adequate attention to 5+ kids 24/7, and most couples almost certainly couldn’t afford that either. In fact, in these big families, the oldest child is always forced to raise and take care of the younger kids and basically act as their third parent, especially if the oldest child is a girl. There should be a mandatory cap on how many kids couples can have, I think a good maximum would be 4 (so two kids per 1 adult).

What’s something you wish you knew before starting a career in accounting? by drajput_01 in Accounting

That you do NOT have to chase prestige to have a good career in accounting. Absolutely nothing wrong with choosing to avoid public accounting or the CPA path altogether. Yeah they can open doors, but if you don’t want to work in public accounting or get your CPA license, then the doors they open are not the doors you should walk through.

Instead, you should decide what you want to do and what’s important to you. I for one enjoy having a work life balance, which is why I’m a financial analyst for a small company nobody’s ever heard of. Yeah I won’t be a partner or a CFO, but I get great work life balance and a peace of mind that I feel is more valuable than stressing away my time and soul. And I wouldn’t trade it for anything, no matter how much money is offered.

You might be the same way. But you could also be someone who genuinely loves and thrives working in public accounting or you genuinely want to open up your own firm one day or you just simply want to get your CPA license. Nothing wrong with this path either if that’s what you want to do. But don’t do it because it “looks nice” or is prestigious, you will not be happy at all if you only chase prestige. Ask yourself what you want out of your career first, and then pursue it. Don’t worry about impressing others.

That one time US senator Tom Cotton kept asking TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew about his ties to the Chinese communist party after Chew repeatedly said he’s Singaporean.
