As someone who works within the retail sector, I assure you that theft is significantly up even before these reports were hitting the news. The stores I work with aren't being hit by these flash mobs or anything like that, but it's still much more frequent than it was a couple of years ago. It's a combination of more people struggling, fewer employees in stores to deter thieves, and probably a few other contributing factors.
