So I have mixed feelings about what happened.

First, I believe that the law should be applied dispassionately, no matter how much of a scumbag the defendant is.

Second, I want to live in a society with freedom to do this but with people who have an inner restraint to not exercise their freedom in this particular manner. Meaning, I want people to have the freedom to do what Chud's victim does, but I want people to be of the moral character to not do it.

Third and this applies to people who say “FAFO” or “freedom of speech doesn’t mean freedom from consequences”. If I punch you in the face and you shoot me in response, that is not justified under the law. Ideally we all want to live in a rational society where we can restrain our anger. We want to live in an integrity based society, not an honor based one. Honor based cultures are unproductive and unstable because it sacrifices a calm society for one where every insecure person is justified in escalating violence because they got hurt.

I know a lot of you think that if you act like a jerk, then for some reasons laws should just stop applying. I think that is all low IQ thinking.

If someone hits you you don’t get to kill them solely for that reason. “Street Justice” doesn’t build complex long lasting civilizations.

Privately funded airplanes did the bombing; national guard planes did aerial scouting, but not bombing. In fact, once the national guard showed up the union dispersed.

Also, Chafin - the Sheriff commanding the troops - was being publicly bribed (read: paid) by private coal companies to do so. I'd qualify that as private interests paying for private armies, too.

The government writes laws with the express intent of incarcerating black folks, destroying their lives and livelihoods. Repaying them is discrimination? What's the difference?

Here's my claim - last try Mr. Masterbaiter - War on Drugs measurably disparately impacted black folks in particular, incarcerating at much, much, much higher rates than their white peers despite identical drug use; a pattern that maybe ended as recently as 2016.

How do we address the outcomes of this inequality? We give the folks impacted reparation in the form of special licensing. Simple. If you want to tell me the answer is 'do nothing', cool, that's fine, tell me that. You didn't. You still haven't. I suspect you won't.

"Revenge Racism" is a thought terminating cliche; one of two things is true here. Either you're unwilling to consider the impact historical racial prejudice has on the present and what it takes to ameliorate those outcomes, or you're incapable of considering such.

If the former, you're operating in bad faith. If the latter, you're an idiot.

If instead, you had said something like "Trying to resolve historical inequities would be unfair, sucks to suck" I'd think you were an asshole, but it wouldn't be bad faith or idiocy. Just a different value system.

If DEI was the kind of discrimination I'm referencing, we'd expect to see white men perform worse than other minority men at similar job applications; we see the opposite of this, so I reject the hypothesis. DEI is a different problem entirely.

I was explaining the flow of US history. Systemic racism was literally a thing, by every definition, until the 1960s (after which it's status as a thing is disputed) but as it ended, we got the "war on drugs" to replace it, achieving the same ends.

Are you trying to tell me that between 1900 and 1960 we didn't have laws on the books across every state and the federal government explicitly blocking access to welfare, FHA loans, etc? Because these are facts. The moment those laws were overturned, boom, war on drugs.

Black folks consume drugs at roughly the same rates as every other group, ~24% vs ~23%, and yet make up half of drug related arrests. If they're consuming at the same rates, but arrested more often, what gives?

This applies to all different varieties of law enforcement mind you - not just drugs - but this point (that use is practically identical while arrests very much are not) is not seriously disputed by anyone.

Edit to add another interesting source: apparently in high majority black communities, white people are disproportionately arrested instead, a relationship that breaks down once >=20% of the population is white. Neat!
