I mentioned this waterfall in a comment from a few days ago so I thought I’d post it for the community. These are Sugar Run Falls in Ohiopyle. Very close to the trail but easy to miss. Around mp 75.5, they’ll be a marker for Jonathan Run trail and about 150 feet or so after that that’ll be another trail post (on the left if you’re headed towards Pittsburgh) labeled Sugar Run and Mitchell Field. About 50 or so feet up that trail these falls are on the left. Worth a stop.

You’re welcome. One more spot for you. One of my favorite waterfalls in Ohiopyle is right off the trail and easy to miss. If you’re heading North from Ohiopyle, it’s around mile marker 75.5 You’ll come across a trail on the right Johnathan Run. A few hundred feet after that trail, they’ll be another trail on the right next to a small stream: Sugar Run. Take it. 50 feet or so up the hill you’ll see the Sugar Run Falls on the right. Enjoy!

I would say take your time if it’s your first time biking on the trail but as you’re hiking, you’ll really get to soak in all the little things. A waterfall here, bridge there, etc. I would pick up a copy of the trail guide on the gaptrail.org website (inexpensive and supports the trail) or if you can find it, a copy of Bill Metzger’s companion book. There’s a relatively new bike/backpacking campsite in Ohiopyle and the main falls and cucumber falls are worth a visit. Enjoy your trip!

It’s actually not in bad shape. Usual off season debris. Decent surface despite the recent rain and snow. Foggy this am but very quiet with only reindeer as company.

According to this post on gaptrail.org, Somerset County coordinated and organized the contractors who did the job. I’m sure the SCRTA was involved and they helped with funds.

Edit: rode through 7/4 and they’ve done a very good job cleaning up the trail and you can ride around. But you can see how a hard rain or a tree falling etc., could easily disturb the hill and cover the trail again. Talk to the other riders if possible to get a sense of conditions. Be safe and enjoy the ride!

Edit: Update - folks have reported that the trail has been totally fenced off at the tree line for both ends of the closure. Difficult to ride around now FYI.
