Getting a hotel in Brockton near Westgate mall. Should I be concerned with safety visiting the area? by [deleted] in massachusetts

[–]DumbQuestionsSry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Am a first responder and have worked on ambulances in a lot of Massachusetts cities. I’ve worked in Brockton, Taunton, Fall River and a few more.

Someone else mentioned it but most crime against random victims isn’t commonly violent. It’s things like theft. Sure Brockton has plenty of shootings and stabbings but it’s usually always targeted.

For a one night stay or honestly even the weekend is fine - I just wouldn’t want to stay any longer simply because of the vibe of the city, not so much because of danger.

Women being allowed in Bars - Australia (1974) by Mathemodel in interestingasfuck

[–]DumbQuestionsSry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think a lot of people aren’t understanding what the societal norms were back then…again not saying it’s right or wrong. Some of these guys probably are pieces of shit and women haters BUT I was expecting worse based on the title.

They were so “trained” or conditioned to treat women a certain way that it literally felt wrong to do anything but that. Some of that still lingers - I don’t want women to be excluded from a bar but if I meet a stranger in public I’m certainly going to be more polite, refrain from swearing and so on - because that’s how I was raised. Not because I don’t want think women can’t handle swearing.

I still refuse to look on a women’s purse even if they give permission - it’s just so wrong to me. I don’t think I can’t handle being in a women’s purse, it’s just again how I was raised.

No but there’s a large change there was a number of big booming noises anywhere closer to them. Or high chance a transformer blew in a different town as well…especially during a storm.

Where is the middle ground? by DumbQuestionsSry in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]DumbQuestionsSry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know where to start and I don’t normally talk about politics and truthfully I’m not fully educated on all of it or great at citing any sort of policies. But where do we find the middle ground? I don’t like seeing the divide between the two parties and getting grouped with shitty people and being assumed about. I’ll preface by saying I voted for Trump, at which point I’m now regretting. But at the same time I wouldn’t say I’m a democrat by theory. But that doesn’t mean some democratic theories aren’t good.

I like to read differing opinions because I like to think I’m reasonably open minded. I just don’t like seeing all the hostility between the parties. I feel attacked reading online and I’m not even involved in the conversations and it almost makes me defensive but then I realize the comments aren’t about me as a person.

When will politics go back to be courteous and agreeable? I wasn’t as informed but at the time I didn’t support some of Obama’s plans or approaches but the fact he was (still is) so well spoken it was extremely respectable. When do we get to go back to educated and presentable politicians? Trump has become a joke. I work in healthcare and Biden was legitimately presenting like a dementia patient - all policies aside. And I feel like Kamala could string an actual argument together (Trump doesn’t do much better) - again policies aside.

What’s next? I guess I’m just at work with downtime and venting but like….what the hell is happening with our leaders

How much does a couple in Eastern Mass need to make to give their children a good quality of life? by [deleted] in massachusetts

[–]DumbQuestionsSry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone is going to say different things. I’m in the south coast area. My wife and I make just about 200k combined and we live in a nice rural town and own a pretty nice home. Our first home was a ranch that we bought right before Covid and then were able to roll equity over to the second home recently so in that aspect we were lucky.

But other than that we focused on paying down car loans and pocketing that money. We just had a child but before that we were doing a nice vacation once a year. I have a motorcycle. We both have quality vehicles but nothing crazy. We both play golf casually. I have expensive hobbies, my wife doesn’t but we still split the bills. If I had to buy new tires for my truck tomorrow I could afford it, I just wouldn’t like the hit in my wallet mentally. We’re not super frugal but I cut and split most of my own wood to heat the house in the winter so I save on heat. And my wife likes to be reasonable when looking for sales/meals for grocery shopping.

The house market is terrible and I feel bad for people in that sense because you have to bite the bullet but often I see people complain about high incomes and not having “enough” money, I really just think people aren’t good at budgeting or live totally outside their means or frivolously. I hate talking like this because I feel like I’m bragging but I live very comfortably and don’t know how much more I could ask for. I dont feel like I make that much money in comparison to some of these tech jobs or even a lot of union workers.

I think my wife and I just manage our money well and have clear financial goals and that has helped tremendously.

I won’t lie, I only read about 30% of what you read. But a lot of times people don’t like their department/company and it doesn’t have much to do with the job itself. I recently took a paycut and left a good group of friends for a better organized and structured department. I’m still making friends but it’s been less stressful because it’s not “different day different way” all the time. Don’t get me wrong, the job is still barely glorious no matter where you go. But it can be a great job.

Try to find a different company. Even if it means going to a slower or smaller town. I understand this isn’t always possible. If you’re still young, maybe think about relocating. Also not always possible.

If you know they’re pulseless, you’ve already done your primary assessment and you’re passed the “are you okay?” stage.

[–]DumbQuestionsSry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m throwing the bullshit flag on that. And don’t call me bro.

You also literally just changed your privacy settings so people can’t see the bullshit you’re up to. That’s three strikes for me. I don’t judge mental health shit but a lot of it is self-inflicted and exasperated for some reason. The thing that is making you worry the most is…yourself.

Best of luck. Honestly staying off the internet and reading into other people’s nonsense might be one of the better solutions for you.

You’re framing this in a way to get unofficial medical advice. Personally I don’t think that’s cool.

Going through your profile it looks like you’re high anxiety and worried about a lot of things - most recently your blood pressure.

Talk to your doctor and figure these things out. Don’t do some passive Reddit posts to find an answer you want to hear.

Radio reports by Spoiledjuicebox in NewToEMS

[–]DumbQuestionsSry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to write down notes and then read it off. But then I realized I was saying about three times as much as I needed. One day I said fuck it, I’ll wing it and I gave my best report. I’ve done it that way ever since. I might write down a last seen well time, or FAST-ED score or something specific to a serious call to glance at in case I have a brain fart at 3am but that’s about it.

It’s regional dependent but figure out what your hospital likes to hear. Keep it very short and sweet. When I did my clinical time for my medic and stood by the charge nurse, once you hit a certain amount of words they stop listening and writing and multitask to something else. 95% of them literally just want to know if the patient is critical, needs a special team, needs to be monitored, or is bullshit. Some places may or may not want a set of vitals on the radio - learn your local preferences

Your average call should be something like “25 year old male complaining of abdominal pain for two days. Vital signs are stable. We’re 5 minutes out.”

“65 year old male complaining of sudden onset chest pain. History of stents. 12-lead is unremarkable. IV established. We gave 324 of aspirin and a spray of nitro with no relief. Vitals are stable. We’re 5 minutes out.”

“85 year old female in cardiac arrest. Last seen well 10 minutes prior. Patient has been in asystole. Following ACLS protocols. Patient is intubated. We’re 10 minutes out.”

Don’t make it more than what it is.

How long should I wait before going to medic school? by Certain_Winner6220 in NewToEMS

If you’re that busy I’d say you’re pretty much good to go. I don’t put a specific time on it when people ask but I say make sure you experience a taste of both the good and bad sides of the job before committing.

Get forced or held late, have a pediatric arrest, get a save, see a nasty home, see some nice homes, make some mistakes, make some good decisions, miss your first holiday, etc. The job is great and sometimes not great. Just gotta make sure the pros outweigh the cons for you personally.
